What is going on here? Bravo for certain things but it seems like it's dying

Every day that I come on and click 'View New Content', there's at minimum a full page of new posts. It may not be as active as it was 8 or 9 years ago, but there's still plenty of activity (though a lot of it is in the dedicated threads, like Reading At T'Moment).

If ICE and SE wrote more quickly, it'd probably be more active... :)

I disagree. Also, you're wrong.

That isn't an argument
Tatts early in SH game: Hmm, so if I'm liberal I should have voted Nein to make sure I'm president? I'm not that selfish

Tatts later in SAME game: I'm going to be a corrupt official. I have turned from my liberal ways, and now will vote against the pesky liberals. Viva la Fascism.
When Venge's turn comes, he will get a yes from Mess, Dolmen, Nevyn and Venge but a no from the 3 fascists and me. **** with my Government, and i'll **** with yours

Yes it is.
Yesterday, upon the stair, I saw a man who wasn't there. He wasn't there again today. Oh, how I wish he'd go away.

I mean if the goal is to make the forum more active, this is a shot that Nico defends to the death and everyone else gets confused on how he can believe the stuff he spouts, so not a bad one.

If you want some more you could post 'Goodkind shows how dangerous society is for women by having rape scenes in each of his books.', or something like 'Why does Brandon Sanderson hate romance, I mean he has none in any of his books.', or you could even post a 'Is Jim Butcher having so much trouble writing Peace Talks because he can't write a non-terrible love scene?'

Well, I'm not as active as I used to be but that's just because I'm in treatment. And that's because I was drunk/high for the previous year. Well really the previous 35 years but the last year was particularly amusing in a Gruntle sort of way.
The site has slowed down yes. But that's mostly due to the fact that a certain chum of yours has apparently stopped writing books.....
Maybe he needs to stop hanging around with you?

HiddenOne. You son of a bitch. You slimy, skulking, low-posting scumbag. You knew it would come to this. Roundabout, maybe. Tortuous, certainly. But here we are, you and me again. I started the train on you so many many hours ago, and now I'm going to finish it. Die HO. Die. This is for last time, and this is for this game too. This is for all the people who died to your backstabbing, treacherous, "I sure don't know what's going on around here" filthy lying, deceitful ways. You son of a bitch. Whatever happens, this is justice. For me, this is justice. Vote HiddenOne Finally, I am at peace.

I have to agree with the Captain a bit. This reminds of back when I was involved with running a computer club for kids, both of age and of heart and some of the old guys who used to run it came back to see what was going on. Aside from a few of them, they'd pretty much all do nothing but complain.

I wasn't here long enough to really get to know you Mal, but I think I'm going to stick with the old "put up or shut up" adage.

It's not to be mean or dismissive. But setting up a place and then handing it over to someone else and leave only to come back and complain that it's not as awesome as in the good old days, well, it's just not very helpful.

If people want to come back and have fun, talk about shit and tear up asses and relive the good old days, then by all means, have at it. But if they only come back to complain, ie. troll, then really, kindly go away. Posted Image

good response and fair enough to you, but I still think you're a bunch of insufferable cunthammers generally.

Yeah it's Mal,

I look at this website and I don't see a lot of difference from when I passed it over to new management and I am disappointed. Is this place dying? Is it? Ask yourself - do you spend less time here than you used to? Are you less interested in this place than you were a year ago? I know I am but I'm a fucking troublemaker so my opinion doesn't really count. My life is good - the fact that some part of me cares about what happens in this place speaks to my essential madness. I love you crazy fucks but, BUT I also cannot fucking tolerate the dumbcunts among you. Anonymity is important to freedom of expression and that's just true. I feel like this is it - I host SE regularly, I'm even starting to feel like he's a mate of mine, like he trusts me - I don't trust him but I more or less worship him so it's easy and I love it. I love and respect this man beyond what conventional wisdom would tell you was appropriate. The fandom seems to have morphed into something that neither he nor I can understand. We'll see how it goes - will I be banned immediately? That's the smart choice but ... whatever happens, DO BETTER - doing the same thing for less money is laudable for sure but you ought to be innovating. DO BETTER.

Okay, as a newbie I can't compare between your good old days and now: What do you think is wrong with the current forum in comparision to your good old golden times?

And more important: Why can't Steve understand us? Too much whining what is messing with our grooves? Too much mafia? Too many TV discussions?:)

I brought mafia from westeros to here and it wasn't easy by any stretch of the imagination. Mafia is one of those things where you can't take ownership of it - it's a thing unto itself so I won't criticize , I will simply say that I don't like the way that you play it. When I first landed at this website, I was fresh off midnight tides and I was like 'this fucker is taking aim at America and therefore must have balls of industrial steel and I found a community of serious, curious people who wanted answers to their questions. What was behind Icarium's plan for the Teblor? What is the deal with the giant at the bottom of the well? and so on. The community I met then was interested in such things. I have to be honest - as predicted, when the books were picked up by an American publisher, the community went rapidly downhill. Let's have a poll shall we?

America, fuck yeah!
Coming again to ruin your mother- fucking forum!
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

Somehow I doubt SE is too concerned about the state of the forum. Mal, otoh...

I might pen a longer, rambling answer later, but the gist is: the "SE fans" aspect of the fora is fine: there's a ton of new members/readers who ask newb questions, get helpful answers; there's fan-made world map, timelines (nod to D'rek); wiki (nod to Egwene); a ton of superb art (nod to Puck and the rest of the artists); there's even several budding authors who cite SE as their main inspiration who are getting published!

The other aspect of the forum is "the scary mob"--the core user base that makes up "the community" and mostly lurks south of the book-related subforums. There's been plenty of changes here, but that's due to life happening to all of us. People outgrow the forum and leave (not everyone makes a Brood-like exit thread). And those who stick around develop a somewhat possessive attitude to the forum as their hangout spot, so there's less demand for drama and excitement than there may have been back in the day.
Note also that the average age of the "scary mob" has significantly increased since the early days. That tends to temper people.

Thumbs-up mate - most of that is certainly true - I met my wife here and I have some ridiculous notions regarding how it ought to be - I'm bitter and unreasonable about being left behind, maybe. Or maybe you're a bunch of cunts - also possible. Certainly not impossible anyway. At the end of the day, I just want to manufacture a conflict because I understand that environment best. Any group of people who set about to compile an encyclopedia and decide to care about spoilers in such an enterprise immediately lose my respect because it's a fucking encyclopedia ffs - by definition it has all the answers that are available. If you are the type of person to avoid spoilers then you should go nowhere near an encyclopedia on the subject you wish to be shielded from. This should not be controversial. The spammers, when they arrived, INFURIATED me - I didn't understand where they were coming from but now I'm one of them - I'm a troublemaker - I want to shake you out of your comfortable patterns and remind those of you that matter how this place used to be - a hopeless effort I know so in reality I just want to connect with my old friends who I'm now separated from by a huge ocean and I want to ask them to come visit because I miss them terribly and I doubt that the locals will suffice.

Most of the lack of the old forum members is, let's face it, on the people who have gotten themselves a life and moved on. Also, the later books, especially the Kharkanas ones, are not everyone's thing. I don't get it either. You missed all the drama around FoL.

That said, good to see you're well and ready to get into an internet fight, Mal.

I've been on these forums in what seems like forever (realistically, it's more like 12 years) and there have been many changes - style, content, members, mods, server hosts, friendships...

I wouldn't say there was a good old days like Mal seems to think. There have been great times, terrible times and loads of general chit chat all over the place.

Maybe Mal is stuck with nostalgic glasses or something but I still enjoy it very much. I have made some good friends here, not just online but IRL too.

Changes happen. You either roll with it or moan about it and get left behind. I also agree with whoever said that I doubt SE worries too much over what's happening on the forums...

Mal, I might pop over to the Western Coast of North America next year... Mainly California but I may have time for a long weekend slightly further North...

"The Fandom" is far, far more than just the Empire. Even so, time changes everything. I see far less vitriol than I used to see in the book forums and I think that's a good thing.

The group you belong to was created by me in a fit of morning-drunkenness coupled with a fondness for Ambrose Bierce, the greatest quotist that ever lived. And yes, I've just used your worthless comment to plug Ambrose Bierce because he doesn't get enough love here or anywhere. Otherwise, eat a bag of dicks you ringpiece (look it up :)
