Nice pics!

I spent ages last night taking pictures - just because so many views warranted recording.

I found a lake, containing a big prehistoric looking fish - and when I launched out of the water, there was this amazing valley view ahead, a ringed planet behind, and I was hovering over a lake in a rain shower.

I just liked the way the light rays were shining through this guys spines.

So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

Some more great pics Traveller!

I've been doing the second community event. This planet is not as memorable as the first, but it's weird in its own way. A desert planet, but with plentiful bodies of water as well (and the biggest marine animal I've seen so far in there). The event has you feeding animals and collecting their poo for study - which I bet they've done to show off how much more responsive animals are now to interaction.

For example: I was feeding a small herd of, uh, reptile sheep with tadpole tails, and more of them would come jogging over the crest of the hill to join in the free food. When they poo, they now kick their back legs as if covering it. Then, animals of other species came running along, like the cutest animal I've seen so far - a small mole thing which walks upright (unfortunately, they wanted cobalt, which I didn't have). I was happily feeding my growing herd when, suddenly, a predator came along and started hunting, killing and eating all of them. I felt so bad for my herd that I did something I try never to do: I killed the predator who hadn't been bothering me, and then I felt bad about that too.

What I like about this event is that it builds upon the first. The stuff you collect is Hexite, which the animals have been producing from eating the Hex Cores of the first event. So it looks like this will be an ongoing story told over eight weeks, which is cool. Plus, the Hexite can be sold for a frankly ridiculous amount of units.

Found a sweet S-class rifle... bought it, but now have to reinstall a load of things I don't have blueprints for, so off on a space station hop for modules.

Also need nanites. I never seem to accumulate many - millions of units now, but like 250 nanites.

If you have a larger refiner, you can apparently combine coprite and the new hexite being produced by the animals during the event to make tonnes of nanite clusters.

I don't yet have anything other than my portable refiner so I've just been selling it.

That's so funny, I did the same! A big reptile/dog leapt out and ate one of those cute little guys - I was so incensed I shot it! And then I felt bad, so I dug a hole under it with the terrain manipulator, it dropped in, and I buried the whole sorry incident.

I got a shitload of... well, shit, in a small amount of time. Got the new helmet design, and accumulated a large number of hexite, which i haven't done anything with yet. I found it quite amusing that with all those planets to explore I was running around after 4 different types of beastie with a poop scoop.

You can. It's in the menu. There are a lot of different options that can be confusing, but the key is to take the picture and then hit that left share button. It will momentarily take you out of the game, but you can go back to right where you left off.

Yeah I worked it out. Shared it on Twitter but not saved it onto the PS4 as it was a bit confusing.

So it seems there's a limit to how much quicksilver you can earn this time round. After I did the initial 25, I went back to feeding more animals. When I had fed 100, I got a notification saying that the research limit had been reached and to contact Polo. When I did so, he proclaimed that he had sniffed enough samples to last a lifetime or words to that effect, and I got a notification that the quest was now complete. I think I earned around 5,000 quicksilver in all, which is not enough to buy all the new stuff straight away - think there'll be grumblings about that.

Yeah I found that, although I didn't collect that much. I went back, found a busy spot and fed and collected until I earned around 2500 quicksilver. I've hung onto it though as there's not anything else I want yet.

I don't know what to do with all these hexites now. For some reason I don't have the medium refiner - although I do have the small and large. Can the large refine the hexites into nanites?

Biggest bonus of the trip - my first S-Class exotic! It was landing at a trading post as I took off. I did a double take and landed again so fast! Cost quite a bit but it looks awesome - the wings fold up as it lands! Taken quite a few pictures already, it just looks great everywhere, and I love the detail and decoration on the canopy glass.

That it one cool looking ship!

Speaking of ships...I finally got a freighter! Only took me 60 hours of playing the game lol. I warped into a new system and a freighter was being attacked by pirates. The battle took place inside the rings of a planet, which just made it all the more atmospheric. Afterwards the freighter captain gave the ship to me. I'm still exploring how the whole system works. I managed to build a control terminal so that I can assign missions to my fleet - but my fleet currently consists of one escort corvette (it still came in handy when other pirates attacked us later and the corvette jumped in to annihilate them, that was awesome!). I'm wondering if I should give the corvette a low-level 1-star mission to do by itself, but the point may be moot as I'm not sure how to fuel these big ships yet :no

The best thing though was having some more storage space at last.

I also decided to finally upgrade from my starting dinky ship. A long-nosed Fighter class flew into the freighter and I bought it for a couple of million. So now I have two ships, a freighter, and a corvette. Now I just need to work out how all these mission systems work. Are the missions you get aboard the freighter different to the ones you can pick up at space stations?

Yup.

There are 2 types of Freighter Missions. The first are missions you send your frigates on. You want to try and outstar the mission, so I'd suggest you buy more frigates. Also, unlike everything else in the game, frigates level up the more you use them. You should have gotten the recipe for 'fleet fuel' or 'frigate fuel' or something. Its Tritium and Di-Hydrogen. If you have some money, you can go recruit frigates for a couple million a piece, and then you wont have to repair/lose them if they get damaged on missions, if you outstar the mission.

The second type are harder 'system' missions. They are about the difficulty of the guild level 8 missions, and reward very well.

I still have my original freighter, which is a bit short on storage space and only a C class, but its kind of home now. I'll hang onto it until I find something amazing to replace it with. Best thing is, when you're on the planet surface, you can summon the freighter into low orbit - it just looks great hanging there!

When you jump systems, fly by any fleets and look for available frigates. Sometimes class matters less than their success rate and stats - they'll level up anyway so getting one with bonuses is better.

Make and store a pile of freighter fuel, it will come in handy later. Also if you send a few ships on a mission, send a supply ship with them as part of the party (they also give you fuel when not on a mission)
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

I went back to the community planet, and as well as finding all the communication signs up around the portal (they didn't show up before?), and reading the messages, I saw another exotic at the nearest trading post, where I got mine. So if you want one, scan for trading post from the portal, its quite close by - you might be lucky!

Thanks guys. I did have the blueprints for freighter fuel construction yeah, but I spent ages trying to work out how I was actually physically supposed to fuel the damn things. It took me way longer than it should have to realise that it is automatically taken out of your inventory when you send them on a mission :no

So how do you recruit more frigates? I went to another fleet which warped into the system but only the freighter was boardable (oh yeah, I also landed on my frigate - running around the outside of the ship while it's flying in low orbit feels so awesome!)?

Try jumping off into a free fall!( no I haven't tried this... yet)

I didn't find any recruitable frigates until I jumped system. Each new one I've visited so far has had different types to recruit, they have a green symbol over them and you can call them via comms to look at the ship as you fly close. If it's a C class with a poor record or incompetent crew, don't bother. If they're a C or above and have positive attributes and crew, go for it. (I like reading the details - 'Pets allowed on board' etc..!)

Man, my combat frigate jumping in when I'm being attacked by pirates will never get old. Hello Games clearly watched a lot of Battlestar Galactica :no

So I disregarded all your advice and sent my combat frigate out on its own on an exploration mission - I was too excited to try out the missions to wait till I got more frigates. It managed to pass through three systems before they brought something on board which escaped and ate up miles of wiring, critically damaging the ship. Now repaired and lesson learned! Those mission reports are cool though, didn't expect them to be so detailed.

I've also now picked up my first guild missions.

The repairs are actually make quite nice moments in the game - nothing complicated but good to be able to get up close with the fleet, and just walking on a gantry or ladder above the planets is cool!

I tried a bit of freighter searching last night. As there was a battle when I system jumped, I basically reloaded, jumped into a different system, checked the freighter in the battle to see if it was one I would like, and if it wasn't (I really want one of those star destroyer types) I'd reload and jump to a different system.

If I did like the freighter- I'd destroy the fighters and go on board to check the class/size. That was the problem - I'd find some nice ones, some with really cool colour scheme, but they'd only be a C or have 20 odd slots. I did discover that if you jump back to the same system after reloading, you get the same command ship, but with different stats and class. So it kept me busy even though I was too picky to end up with anything yet.

I even turned down an A class. And another exotic - a bright yellow one with side engines! For some reason the trails from the engines were vertical when flying tho which looked weird so I reloaded and left it. The search continues!

This one was reeally nice - I just wish I could remember which system it was in...

Never did find that one again.

Decided to leave it up to chance, searching for something specific in a rng universe is a bit of a waste of game time!

So back to exploring, and maybe some building.
