Favoured Tragic Death

Coltaine's death was by far the most tragic. He was one of the empire's most capable Fists. He led an army hindered by useless nobles against impossible odds when at any time he could have cut them loose and saved his own men. He was cut down with in sight of saftey and still recieved no help. I'm still very curious to see what kind of reprecussions his death will have and to what role he will play when he is reborn.

I have to agree with the option of Tehol, evn though he didn't die. His death was so brutal and real. So undignified. He didn't go down in a massive emotional scene in front millions of onlookers like Coltaine, and there was no build up battle to prepare us. He just got the ***** kicked out of him on the spur of the moment, in a way that you might see down the high street on a saturday night. Truly horrible and saddenning

I vote for the king/emperor of Letheras (although I can't even remember his name now). And not even because of the way he died, but because of the scene before that. The one where he sits in loneliness on his throne and someone says that from now on the Kingdom of Letheras becomes an Empire. Empty words in a desperate time when all is lost. There is not a scene in all the books of the Malazan series that could even barely compare to the desperation I felt at that moment. So may be my vote goes not for the king, but for Letheras itself. However deserved, its death was by far the most tragic and heart-touching of all.

without doubt the most "moving" death for me was Brukhalian...
it was the way it was written, the entire scene, drawn out, perfectly visualized. people do extraordinary things when they know they are going to die, Erikson really nailed that with Brukhalian's death.
Itkovians death was sad but what was more touching was the army lining up to put gifts on his grave. serious sniff sniff action.
Whiskeyjack...gotta tell ya...i don't think he's all the way gone and plus, it was so quick, i hardly had time to blink.
Coltaine,...saw it coming and the scene wasn't as heart-rending as the Brukhalian scene. and too, i was numb from following Duiker around watching cruel death after cruel death.
but, i'm only halfway thru HoC thus far...could be worse deaths to come. Baudin's death was also in the tragic category for me.
what was most wrenching about Whiskeyjack's death was when Fiddler found out...that got me.

Felisin. As I've said time and time again, by the far the most emotional death I've "gone" through in a novel.
same. and baudin's death is second.
I know people go on about itkovian and brukalians deaths like they are the most tragic, however I never really got touched by those deaths.

depends jonzey, whats your logic on that?
and ya, whiskeyjacks death just didnt sink it it took me a while, like dujek seeing him, and mallet trying to commit suicide before i fully realized what had happened.

I'd have to say that Itkovian's death was by far the most depressing. I had hoped that he would some how live, but I started having doubts after the fall of the city.

Argh, too hard to decide... It was a hard choice between Whiskeyjack, Itkovian and Coltaine... I had to go whiskeyjack in the end... the sheer... senselessness of it all.

Tehol struck me as the most unexpected and therefore most tragic death. The part where that stranger tries to stop the edur and they beat up and killed him just made my decision more solid so I chose other too.
Coltaine was tragic as was felisin, bruckhalian and the rest but in the back of my mind I kinda saw these guys ending in a tragic way at least two or three pages before it happened. I got admit though I had to stop when I read the dramatic irony of tavore being lied to by pearl and lostara.

I had to go with Coltaine's death. The way SE built up the sense of outrage while you watch with Duiker, the comprehension of what he and his soldiers had bought and its cost....it's the most evocative scene I've ever read. Then the significance of who or what Coltaine was hits you as thousands(thousands!!!) of crows gather for his soul.

wj, coltaine and itkovian all had me choked up, but in the end it had to go to whiskeyjack.. hes by far my fav char in the series, he just jumped to silverfoxes aid without a thought, even though he wasnt sure whether she was good or evil. it was made all the more tragic by the way he would have had kallor if not for the broken leg... its harrowing how erikson had that planned since the end of gotm. such an unexpected death aswell, no-one sees it coming, after i read it i had to pause and reread to make sure i had it right

WJ was on of the few times reading a book that i actually wanted to unread it, go into the book and kick some Kallor a** before it all happened.
Also Brys death was a choaker. How unjust was that. He was such an amazing swordsman...
Im getting all emotional here, gonna stop.

I guess I'm the only one here who didn't really care much when WJ died. My fault for not liking the guy... Too much of a Vimes rip-off for me...

Guess so. He was a wonderfully crafted character and his death seemed so... pointless...
