Greatest things that never happened

Many times in the Malazan books we have been given foreshadowing of events that end up never happening. One of the very first was the Raest v Rake, right when we learned what the Adjunct Lorn was doing we were fed the idea of a fight between these two. With Raest curb stomping the dragons it, for me at least, built up my anticipation, then they never fought. I know there are some other examples. So I am just wondering what everyone thinks was one of the biggest things they were looking towards but then it never happened.

The 14th coming back and conquering the Empire in a rip roaring rampage of revenge.
Laseen did nothing wrong.

That would be terrible.
A) The 14th doesn't have a 10th of the power needed to conquer and hold the Malazan Empire. Nor do they have the minds for it.
More importantly. There is no revenge to be had. Their excommunication/denouncement was un-officially their actual mission. Their fall saved the empire from a civil war. Tavore understood this.
You could argue their deal was with the empress and they have an axe to grind with Mallick Rel but I find it a poor story.

Maybe you should suggest your own things instead of pooh-poohing other people's.

I did above.
Hey, I didn't mean to piss in your cornflakes here. I just think, in regards to the ending of The Crippled God, the 14th had their ending. They traveled across the globe and saved the world. For them to then travel back to the Empire to fight, not for the empire, but their own pride?
I don't think it would fit.

On the other hand, I'm not so sure her understanding stretched to appreciate several hundred claws being sent after her, T'amber, and Kalam :F Agreed tho, the ending Tavore's army got was better than having them kicking's Laseen ass. She got served well enough in Return of the Crimson Guard.
I regret we didn't see Quick Ben in his soletaken form, I'm still curious about this. And I think not following up on Felising Younger and Apocalypse Army was a wasted opportunity, but I haven't read Esslemont's novels beyond RotCG.

This was more a wish I had especially before TCG came out.
I also had thought that Tavore forming her own assassin corps was going to go further than it did.

Quick Ben's soletaken form is a platypus. I've been telling you all this for years.
Maybe it's weird, too, but I was really sad when Laseen died. I guess because Taya was working for Rel.

I didn't want Laseen to die either. For 6 or 7 books she'd been this potentially malicious, sort of unknown power that served mostly as an antagonist to the various Malazan characters.
Then in RCG she is shown to be quite formidable and more interesting than we had expected... and then she dies. Wish we'd had more time to get to know her.
I guess there is still the new Esslemont books.

Seriously, an Andii assassin Rake is reluctant to use... I would have liked to see more about that.

Yeah, a little part of me was really gleeful at the notion.
Similarly at one point I was expecting ST/Cots/allies to send Apsalar, Cutter, Leoman, Dunsparrow, Kalam and Dassem's daughter at someone.
The final appearance of the Enkara'al Beast Champion was fun and very SE to subvert our expectation, but I wouldn't have complained about more devastation and stabbing from it.

I kind of wish we got to see Tayschrenn actually be used as Quick Ben's shaved knuckle in the hole. At the end of bone hunters, Tayschrenn and Shadowthrone talk about how Tayschrenn agreed to be Quick Ben's shaved knuckle.

When it comes to Rake, I also wish Nimander had a chance to meet him at Black Coral. The buildup for Clip and Nimander finally meeting Anomander was long and the final resolution was amazing but... darn, Nimander deserved that meeting.
Amen to that!

Seconded to Nimander and Rake meeting, I think that would have been interesting.

I would love to see that conversation.
Kallor: Did you have fun being imprisoned in Dragnipure?
Draconus: You know there is nothing stopping me from killing you now, even your protection from the Crippled god is gone.
Kallor: what's stopping you?
Draconus: I know you want to die and I wont give you that sweet relief. Besides you will never break my curse but you will have to live forever knowing I broke yours
Kallor: ......

And then get his face punched in by Draconus. Or just get torn limb from limb. And then force healed so he just exists forever as a torso.
