You know what though? Considering that Newt's story isn't self-contained and dealing with a dark lord like Harry's, and is instead about the wider world of witchcraft and wizardry and the beasts in it, more than a few films makes infinite sense. It sounds like they will be travelling to multiple locations around the globe and having him deal with creatures local to those places and with the wizarding communities therein. I'm guessing this is why JK went on record a while back as she was scripting FANTASTIC BEASTS describing a bunch of new wizarding schools other than Ilvermorny in the States, including Mahoutokoro in Japan, Uagadou in Africa, and Castelobruxo in Brazil.

Grindelwald is mentioned in one of the trailers for FANTASTIC BEASTS. It makes sense since he was as dark as Voldemort during his time...just with less familial anger baggage. I could see them showing the eventual duel that results in Ariana Dumbeldore's death. It's also bittersweet his relationship with Dumbledore disintegrating as he went darker and darker. It makes for great story fodder. I don't know how they will tie him into the BEASTS flicks stories...but I trust JK to write great scripts.

Saw it yesterday with dabing and in 3D. I had no expectations about it (basically went to see it because mom wanted to go see it and had noone else to go with) so I quite enjoyed it. The visuals in 3D are awesome and I liked how the movie went from comical to dark. Very interesting for me was subtlety of the baddie instead of usual megalomaniacs. The main good guys were very interesting too and their actors did really well imho, especially undfolding New't personality was done well, what a fun bunch of weirdos.

Also, Newt is an actual english name too right? Because it's translation here is certainly not and it sounds just strange but I can see why translate it anyway.

Saw it last night. It was great actually, and very much in line with the first HARRY POTTER film/book where there is a lot of learning about the situation you're in. The best part of that is you know all the spells and terms already, so you just get to spend the time learning about country, era, and all the new characters (Including Ron Perlman's surprise turn as a rough speakeasy goblin barman!). The four leads, Newt, Tina, Queenie, and Jacob are all well realized, and come across with solid personalities. A really wonderful film with a basic scope of story to start off a new buch of films, with only minor nods to the overall arc, which I'll talk more about in spoilers.

So wow, a few things. Making Queenie a Legillimens? That's a breathtaking bit of writing to push the plot without having to infodump. Every time someone said a spell it felt like being home again. I missed this world!

Okay, and I knew about five minutes in that Credence had some sort of power and it was hidden from his adoptive puritanical mother...but that he was the Obscurial? Well played. Also, the concept of Obscuris/Obscurial's is easily JK Rowling's best narrative invention here. The idea that inert power forced to stay hidden will roil and flame inside a person and eventually come out as this storm of magic that eventually kills the bearer...GREAT stuff!

The pendant Graves gives Credence is the first sign that he's not who we think he is, The Deathy Hallows pendant...coupled with the opening featuring the back of Grindelwald's head...I had a hunch...which turned out to be TRUE! There he was, Johnny Depp playing Gellert Grindelwald! I'm excited to see what he will do with the character going forward. I love that the concept this time around for the villain is his desirre for wizards and muggles to go to war so that the magic using populaiton no longer needs to hide. That's a really complex villain intent, that is muddied by being accurate....why should wizards have to hide? Anyways, great stuff there. I didn't realize he was actually going to cameo. Wonder who long MACUSA can hold him? Not long I'd wager. Also, does this mean that Grindewald was simply polyjuicing him the whole time.

Something I wasn't expecting was Newt's past with a LeStrange! Nice little piece of worldbuilding there. I would ASSUME that this Lita/Leda LeStrange went eh way of Grindelwald? Not sure. But tht would be a nice twist.

Not that Newt and Tina's burgeoning romance wasn't cute as all get out. It fully was. And it NEVER felt forced to me either, which was nice.

Newt's suitcase was AWESOME. Loved how it was set up.

New fave wizarding world object? Wand-made umbrellas. Awesome!

So it sounds like movie 2 takes place in Paris...and the resst of the films will follow suit by being in other locations with magical communities...which should offer a broad swathe of magical crreatures to see, and see the overall Grindelwald arc unfold as he unleashes global havoc.

Can't decide if Picket the Bowtruckle, or the Niffler was my fave of Newt's creatures. It's a toss up, they both had WONDERFULLY rounded personalities.

Anyways. GREAT start! Can't wait to see where the rest of the films go.

It's basically the HP universe unencumbered by the "school" narrative of the main series. Which means it's allowed to branch out way more into the world building of the universe.

From what I hear all 5 films will (for instance) visit a different city/country around the globe.

Film #1 was the USA
Film #2 is Paris
Film #3 is likely Japan
Film # 4 is Brazil
Film # 5 is Gellert Grindelwald's home country (Norway)
