I get what you say about lightening up fight scenes in an emotional context, but I think it's usually the wrong move - especially in Civil War. The airport fight is supposed to be hugely dramatic and freighted with overtones of a team splintering, friends fighting, and the sense of regret losing to the sense of duty. Putting the Hawkeye/Black Widow one liner in there was bad. Spider-man's quipping was better, but still kinda not right for that scene.

There's a way to make one liners work in fight scenes - but it's almost always in situations where it's a one on one battle between two evenly matched people or one person vs a lotta scrubs. A swirling, level switching battle between teams of super-powered individuals is a bad place to put a one liner in because the pacing gets thrown off by dwelling on that line delivery too long. Snyder did a great multi-person battle in Batman vs Superman (when Doomsday fights Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman) and he didn't have much talking going on because the situation should be too fast and too difficult for the heroes to waste much time quipping.

Well, I'll just have to keep disagreeing. I don't find the pacing suffers at all. I don't find the overtones are lost. I found the switches between light-hearted comedic supermoves at one moment to the teams lining back up and showcasing their resolve the next moment worked just fine.

I'm not saying that the Marvel jaunty-fight style is better or worse than the DC grit-noir style or the Raid absurdly-real style, or any other style... but I don't think there's anything wrong with it either and personally I like it a lot for the overall MCU's general narrative 'atmosphere'.

Ha! They remain intact.

I enjoyed the film but by the airport scene I was torn between 13 year old boy reaction and 36 year old woman eye rolling. It's fucking ridiculous, let's face it and the general laziness in film making caused by all these super hero flicks is getting dull. However they pulled it back with the "twist" with Starks family at the end. The plot was pretty good all in all and I'm guessing Caps letter at the end won't have fixed everything what with War Machine being all cripply and everything.

I agree that packing in more heroes dilutes the feel of the film but Spidey and Ant Man were done so well I forgive them. My main gripe is that as much as I enjoy these films they are getting a bit relentless. Mr PigDog refuses to see any of them with me now, he finds it all too dull and I'm trying really hard not to agree with him. I guess I spend my time watching these films in internal crisis arguing with myself

Mal here.

I miss you Mezla.

It's just that. I miss you terribly, more than I miss Cougar or anybody else and I'm not sure why but I don't question it either. I trust you and I feel like you should know that I am your ally. I don't want anything in return - I just want to preserve you, so that you will always be there - I take nothing back _ I would slaughter a village to keep you safe. I miss you terribly

eta: and that sounds creepy but idgaf, mez is one of the good ones and those are rare indeed.

It's funny how we end up in situations like this. Why can't I love somebody of the opposite sex and crave their success without also wanting to have sex with them? It's the nature of people to reach for the low-hanging fruit, to cry foul when somebody exceeds their personal boundaries and it is the nature of people to punish the outsider, the one who rejects their worldview, all wrapped up in shame. Fuck all of that. Why can't I love and support a person of the opposite sex whom I have almost zero chance of bedding? It's absurd that this is even a question worth discussing and yet here we are. I know who my friends are and they know me, hopefully  To be clear, I'm not trying to be a creep. Maybe it's the way I came up in the world but I need the people I care about to know that my friendship is real - if I am called, I will come, no fail. And that has to be enough. Also, fair warning to all the usual cunthammers that inhabit this place, I await your scorn and will pursue you endlessly if you should seek to cheapen this occasion.

I think I get the track he was on and agree with the sentiment if we're on the same page. You can be friends and love a friend of the opposite sex without having romantic or lustful intentions.
Some people seem (mostly blokes) seem to think that the only reason to be friends with someone of the opposite sex is to try to bed them, otherwise you must be 'gay'. I say fuck you to them, some of my best friends are females, I have never attempted to sleep with them although I acknowledge that they are attractive women. Its like the 'friendzone' bullshit, or 'niceguy' criers. Oh a girl enjoys your company, you have things in common. Well your guy friends enjoy your company ans you have things in common, do you want to fuck them too?
Maybe it comes from having sisters that are my drinking buddies and friends as well. I can quite easily accept a girl as 'one of the lads' so to speak and just interact and joke with them as I would with any of the boys with no intentions outside of having a laugh.

Tldr - fuck those 'macho' arseholes who don't comprehend the idea of having a friend who is a girl and not trying to shag her.

Aww Mal - you're right, I am awesome.

I shall now make a valiant attempt to bring the thread back on topic - I couldn't be friends with Captain America or Thor without wanting to shag them.

Oh and real question - I couldn't be bothered to stay for the very last post-credits scene because I had to get home for my tea and life is too short. What happened? And I expect as a non-comic geek I may require a translation.

In and of itself, it's not a problem, I guess... but randomly bringing that 'issue' up unprovoked in the midst of randomly posting these ultra-personal posts in a Captain America discussion thread raises all sorts of flags and/or questions...

I enjoyed it! A lot darker than the other current MCU films, but it addresses very well the destruction porn "the collateral damage doesn't matter" thing that superhero films do so well.

It saddened me too! I was all "no, you guys are friends, stop hurting each other!" Intense film, glad I saw it at the cinema and now I really must see Ant Man!

I thought this movie was amazing.
The arc from Steve Rogers the patriot with a heart>>> Steve the super Soldier>>>> the War hero>>>>> the man out of time>>>> The leader of Avengers (knowing exactly where to place the team in the first Avengers movie in the NY battle)>>>>> Steve Rogers Agent of SHIELD>>>> Steve rogers vs SHIELD through to the Steve Rogers we get here makes perfect sense. His paranoia runs deep, and is totally understandable after the events from his creation to this point.

Iron mans motivations are also totally understandable, given his guilt, which was ramped up with the amazing scene with the bereaved mother at the elevator.

The initial fight was meant to be humorous; it got more serious when they realised neither side was budging, and Team Cap were holding their own, when seemingly outgunned.

Black Panther, Spiderman and Ant Man were all great. I thought the camera work was only shaky at the start; after that intro, it became a lot clearer what was happening in the action sequences.

And there is no way I can even begin comparing this to the mess that was BVS: the editing of that film, and the producers making Snyder have to cram in the Justice League, Wonder Woman, The Death of Superman, and Dark Knight into one movie was unfair on him I think...

Easily in my top 3 superhero films, and may actually be my favourite Marvel film ( I still find it hard to put anything above the Avengers because "He's adopted" /Hulk punches Thor/ Hulk punches giant worm thing/ "oh no don't tough his hammer" etc...) yeah that's right I like the one liners in that movie.

Great movie.

When Stark and Rogers were laying out their arguments, I felt they both had a point but Rogers' aversion to government control felt more plausible in context of SHIELD being HYDRA.

Later though I felt incredibly bad for Tony. I mean that guy has metric tons of shit thrown on him his entire life. Come on. He deserves way more sympathy.

Black Widow was awesome as always and I continue to be furious at the Marvel people that we did not get a standalone from her. A Black Widow SHIELD spy takedown film would have been awesome.

Ant Man, Spider Man, Black Panther were all good. Spider Man was maybe a bit too brightly coloured?

Ant Man was the funniest but Spider Man shows great potential.

How is Aunt May so young and hot?

The fights and one liners worked. This is why I prefer Marvel over DC. Unrelenting grimdark does not work. It gets boring. I need the occasional comic break.

Bucky is another tragedy. But I really worry about Captain America that he is now effectively an outlaw. He is a character who always needs perspective. I hope Widow joins him as I think she is the only person who really understands him.

Wasn't the stinger for the first Cap movie just his introductory scene from Avengers?

I only saw ANT-MAN because he would appear in CAP 3.
Turned out to be more fun than expected and totally worth it for the extra Civil War fun.
