Watching now it's on Netflix.
On episode 7.
Liking it, think the casting is fair enough, hair colour and the like don't overly bother me (Sharpe and pat Harper look nothing like the books original depictions)
Alfred's wife is a wonderfully cast crotchety bitch. Alfred and his nephew pretty good. As well.
Isn't really anyone that irritates overly.
I think they've maybe crammed it in a bit tight so far, but then they have to have a solid bit of action. In every episode. Asser looked immediately unlikeable

I read this thread and was interested but it made me want to read the book first. I checked the series closer later and decided to watch it as there's a lot of books on my to read pile but not much to watch. Anyway I stumbled upon this(other view on that), seriously, what the hell was the shieldwall battle especially?
Is the whole season like this?

Only watched first minute of the clip.
Couldn't be bothered with more. I got as far as his complaint about the modern road and solid wooden wheels on the cart and just thought. Nope.
Sounds like a Tool. Sorry, an Arseling
As for the combat, it's a bit Hollywood, swinging swords and men dropping from random slashes, but it's not too bad.
The shield wall, well it was never going to be an easy thing to film or put across.
Show us a montage of the lads getting pissed up and working up the courage to be crushed against an opponent doing the same?
Eh,
If you want a historically accurate battle go to a re enactment club.
If you want to be entertained by one of Cornwell great characters, watch the last kingdom.
Let's face it, the battle scenes in Sharpe are fucking farcical, but the show was great fun to watch.

I prefer the actors in Vikings. Too early to tell for The Last Kingdom.

As much as I love the Bernard Cornwell books, comparing season 1 of Vikings to season 1 of The Last Kingdom, Vikings is better but TLK has potential.

I started watching ep 4. It showed tits. This is on BBC correct? They are allowed to do this across the pond or is it just unedited on Netflix?
It was always shown at 9pm - which is the watershed for TV in the UK.

To be honest I found Vikings a little bit slow for my liking, whereas TLK struck a chord quite nicely. I'll certainly watch the second season when (if?) it comes round.

Rewatched, as season two is coming soon!
Thoroughly enjoyable, I still haven't read the books for ages so I can't nitpick about the details, but I think the show really hits the same notes Cornwell does in his writing - it really feels like his work.
Still love that final battle. These shows are really creeping ever closer to being 'accurate.' The fighting styles (hacking with swords), build up and tactics are still off but I liked the close up stabby of the shield wall, and the state of the ground when they drew apart.
Looking forward to S2.

So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

Not sure if everyone is aware, at least in the States, season 2 is available on Netflix! Don't know what is going on with BBC America.

Am rereading the books. There are quite a lot of differences but they're all getting Uthred to the same point so I don't mind.
