I'm not sure why this came into my head this morning but it did.
Do you ever read a book and be screaming in frustration at the obvious stupidity of a certain plotline or scene?

The one that prompted me this morning annoyed the hell out of me straight away and still annoys me when I think about it.

Something from the Shadows of the Apt books that really bothered a few readers was the inapts inability to deal with mechanisms. This didn't annoy me until book 5:

Beating a dead horse here but Magic in the Sword of Truth series.

One of the central points in SOT is that the protagonist is thrust into his new role and thus lack training. Luckily he has a magical sword that can Deus Ex Machina things.

But the issue is that his mentor is a super wizard. Like a ridiculously powerful wizard that could handwave most of the issues in the 5 books that I read. But he never does because he's either unconcious/pre-occupied/dead/sleepy or what ever. Similarly every book has some conundrum that is connected to a "Wizard rule" unfortunately Zed the dumb wizard never gets around to just giving Richard a list of rules and how to avoid/use them.

Made me so god damn angry.

Most of the war/crusade stuff of the Warrior Prophet is directly from the first crusade.

Mostly reading a good historian gives a more entertaining view of it.

First Crusade, siege of Antioch.
Crusaders starved nearly half to death besieging the city. Eventually, they bought off a commander of one of the towers to let them in. The Emir of the city holed up in the citadel, refusing to yield (or was it his son? Don't remember off the top of my head), and then a Turk relief army came, which greatly outnumbered the cruseaders. They couldn't hope to defend the city from inside and outside, so they took the field, and managed to scatter the Turks.

They actually later did the same thing after taking Jerusalem against a relieving Egyptian army @ Ascalon, but the numbers weren't as overwhelming that time, I don't think.

Back on topic: John Marco's "Tyrant and Kings", Book 2-"Grand Design". Concentrated idiocy from everyone. Never have I been more tempted to throw a book against the wall.

Oh, and going back to Bakker: the fact that no one kills Kellhus while he's just hanging there. And later, what Esmi does to Akka for Kellhus.

I don't think I ever despised a character in a series I actually wanted to keep reading more than Kellhus. Forget the Errant, Kellhus is despicable.

This is strange. I've read all the books so far and I don't hate Kellhus. He's not exactly a nice person, but I still find him probably the most interesting character in the series and I want him to be on-screen as much as possible. Not like Elaida or any Seanchan in WOT. Cnaiur .. or however you spelled that. I find his character very interesting, and I also liked Achamian all in all.

I thought it was rather cruel of Bakker to make his version Alexios Komnenos so, hm, disturbed, but it did make for a good story. Or so I think, anyways.

Was explained in the next book exactly how they did it, and they weren't as big as the other ones.

Mainly he starvation. Most of them have no real food for several days. Even Cnaiur had to eat garbage. That makes body very weak I guess. Yeah they were kind of used to that after all the desert and stuff, but still. Plus the epidemy. I know it all gives people some kind of desperate power and survival instincts leaving them no choice, also that renowned religious power they got from Kellhus...but Padirajhas army was described as very massive, outnumbering inris a lot + they had fucking elephants. I dont know, it jest felt like everyone is almost dead and then puff, Kellhus is leading an army of unbeatable zombies and all the Kianese disappear in flood of blood. I think even Consult scouts left by that time with their impressing combat abilites. Were even Scarlet Spires involved? I dont know, maybe it was just the way it was written but I felt like I needed some further explanation because this seemed like something we didnt see striked there.
