So what you're saying is the solution to police shooting people and not being charged is MOAR GUNS?

It's like you're fucking brainwashed.

I fail to see how the civilian having a gun would have improved the situation

I always love when you respond. I really appreciate your line of thinking and taking the time to respond.

It’s about a society that is *safe* and well educated. That’s the goal.

Backstory helps on this one. This was more about the point of just one side being armed.. gives a person a power trip. Super sad. Remember in America the police have been really militarized at this point. I am totally supportative of cops, but this cop caused this situation.

Some here think this clever idea of disarming the population won’t have very frightening effects on a long enough timeline. Two sides being armed keeps the state at bay. Some feel the state only should have power.. but you all know my thoughts on it.

I am pretty sure that if the guy had been armed he would have been shot as soon as he walked out.

Also I am pretty sure that I read somewhere that large segments of the US population being armed is one of the reasons that the US police is so militant. There is always a possibility that even a routine traffic stop could have a gun wielding person involved which greatly increases the potential danger to a policeman.

Yup, the militarisation and extreme amount of police shooting civilians has been blamed, BY THE POLICE, on the fact that so many cops get shot in America. It also does make sense that a police officer constantly on edge for potentially armed suspects is more likely to overreact.

Comparison - again - Australia. Solid gun control laws. Cops don't randomly shoot black kids "because they were scared for their life" or whatever bullshit excuse they use next time. And our cops have guns. And we're also not a police state. Or, frankly, anywhere near it*.

*unless you are a refugee attempting to enter the country by boat. In which case, enjoy our offshore detention centres that the majority of the population thinks is despicable and pointless and inhumane.

There have been 130 gun incidents and 50 deaths already in 2018.

How many of those are self defence ?...

@ worry: you should watch handmaids tale and report back on exactly why you hate the 2nd amendment. Have fun at the whole concept of we will organize and talk harsh language.

Hey all those people that died in wars and stuff, clearly the fact violent combat was engaged because they wanted to and stuff. /hobbyists

You should also read Handmaid's Tale, Nico. You'll find that the issues that trigger the puritan revolution in America is predicated upon the industries destroying America's environment and the republican's creating a dictatorship. But then again, using a fictional book as evidence of anything does seem outlandish.

They're all self defense, since everyone is out to get you.

I've seen The Handmaid's Tale.

I hate the 2nd Amendment because: 1) it is badly written, easily the worst bit of writing in the entire Constitution; 2) it is obsolete -- we have a standing national military, so we don't need to call forth a well-armed militia of citizens to defend the country, nor do the States require that power individually; and 2) it has been bastardized -- any personal self-defense reading of it is on its face intellectually dishonest.

It's exactly NOT what you're implying it is: the right of private citizens (civilians, let's say) to defend themselves against an overreaching State. It is clearly about citizens being armed so they can be militarized at any time in defense of the State -- perhaps against outsiders, perhaps against unruly fellow citizens/residents, who knows.

An Amendment regarding a natural right to self defense would have been a whole lot smarter and consistent with the rest of the Bill of Rights -- at least it would have been focused on the sanctity of personhood and liberty. As it is written, the 2nd Amendment clearly means "private citizens should be armed, because the State may call you to its defense at any time." As far as I'm concerned it's an Amendment that -- in the same way the draft does -- chains the people rather than frees them.

As far as personal access to arms go, I think it should have ALWAYS been an ongoing, evolving legislative matter, not a Constitutional one.

Another school shooting, Florida.

Valentines day, so i assume there'll be some teenage angst/heartbreak/bullying that set the shooter off.

though the shooter is 19, so in the UK that makes him an adult, dunno about Florida.
meh. Link was dead :(

I'm sick of this shit.
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

He was, according to a classmate, expelled for fighting with the boyfriend of his ex-girlfriend -- with whom he was known to be abusive -- and he had also apparently been treated for mental health problems at a clinic but stopped going. http://www.chicagotr...0214-story.html

He also had an apparent obsession with guns, w/ frequent glorification of violence online, and was able to legally purchase that old friend of ours, the AR-15. https://slate.com/ne...-of-school.html
