And we circle back to the Beatles, sort of. Also, what kind of weirdo doesn't like the Beatles? There's a lady at my work who doesn't and I can't fathom it. It's like not liking the Beach Boys...it's just not cricket.

There's some elements of their pasts and their musicality that aren't good - yet they're still one of the greatest groups around and most of them had tremendously successful solo careers. Every single one of them beat most of their spouses - Ringo did so as late as the mid 80s. Many of their early songs have a creepy possessive overtone to them considering that abusive dynamic and tendency to go for young girls. John was also a really shitty father to Julian and that's something so blindingly obvious Paul McCartney put it into Hey Jude.

They also benefited from being arguably the best "take this model of a song someone else did and improve it, while keeping it similar thematically, yet musically different" artists of all time. Helter Skelter, Revolution 9, George getting the sitar in songs, and a few others. They came along at the perfect time to be who they were and make skrillions. The Beatles are/were a phenomenon that will likely never be repeated due to all the context and factors going on in that situation.

I honestly thought the same applied for Harry Potter in terms of the movies, but this GoT show has proven me wrong. It may take the success or failure of American Gods to truly see how things go in terms of books -> movie/premium cable cultural phenomenons.

It was mostly a rhetorical, people can choose not to like music and bands if they like, I just find it funny when I hear opinions of super popular classic bands that are negative. :D Thanks for answering anyways.

Also, AG isn't going to fail. Have you SEEN the cast man? So epic! And Ricky Whittle is a incredible presence. He and Ian McShane are just going to chew scenery together, and it's going to be amazeballs.

There's different levels of success and I have a suspicion that American Gods will never be the same kind of cultural phenomenon that GoT is. I hope the budget and network expectations are in line with this instead of sky high and banking on being a huge hit.

I actually think Mistborn, if changed up a bit, could be the next Hunger Games. It's simple enough, yet somewhat compelling, and gets wild at points.

Oh, absolutely I agree. Aside from all else it works really well without the need for constant special effects in every ep...and yeah, there are some super wild moments they could use for Red Wedding-eque shock moments.

I think the Red Rising trilogy has a lot of potential to be the "next big thing," if the movie is done well.

FWIW, I think the Dark Tower is going to be a cultural phenomenon - but that was locked in before Harry Potter and somehow never acted upon until now. King is big business and always has been.

I wouldn't be surprised if you're correct. I gave up at book three and I'm still really excited to see the adaption. If done well, it should be huge.

This episode - battle was a little silly for reasons already discussed but it didn't spoil it for me. Mostly I'm just happy to see Ramsay get his just desserts.

Here's a neat bit on the historical inspirations for various aspects of the battle: http://www.vulture.c...l-accuracy.html

Mistborn is the next Star Wars, if it ever lands with the right creative team. I'm not a huge fan of the books but there's huge potential there for a great spectacle movie series.

As for AG, with the people it's got involved, I foresee it being probably better than Game of Thrones but not necessarily as popular. On the other hand, I'm pretty sure Gaiman now is far more popular and successful with a casual, not-committed-fantasy-fan crowd than GRRM is, and urban fantasy, even weird one, is an easier sell than GoT was when it came out even after LotR, so it could explode if they get it right.

On the other hand, Gaiman thought Mirrormask was a good idea, and this AG promo photo looks like Tekken meets The Flintstones Movie:

So I wouldn't throw my hat in with this show just yet.

I was raised on the Beatles and I love them, but I would be the first to admit that they put out a lot of bullshit. There are many nuggets of gold mixed in, though, including some stuff with George on sitar. Don't know a whole lot about their personal lives, but Paul was always my favorite musician of the bunch. George next, despite the sitar stuff. John always wrote weird music (just talking about the notes, not the lyrics).

Thoughts on E9:

Generally good, but extremely predictable. Dany actually did something (at last). The outcome of the battle was very easy to see coming, add to that the way that Littlefinger was brought in feeling like a proper DEM (it'd been alluded to for a while in prior episodes but the handling of it was way too Helm's Deep). The ultimate Rickon-roll was really easy to see coming as well. When will Sansa die? She's almost as unbearable as Kaladin at this stage. Ramsay's death was very predictable.

Overall I'm interested to see how the season ends but it seems to be veering towards a very straightforward, unbending storyline.

I call it Winterfelm's Deep. It just rolls off the tongue, don't it?

Deus ex Machina. Effectively, it was amazingly cliché and almost played out like the end of a Feist book. And it wasn't a true DEM, sure, because it was so heavily alluded to in prior episodes. But the handling of it was awful. "Oh, and here's littlefinger and Kalasans riding in looking all smug and heroic'. Fuck off. Get eaten by the dragons, Sansadin and Littlepenis.

Bad comparison.

Gandalf TOLD people help was coming. Also there was suspense as to whether they could hold out long enough for Gandalf to save them.

Sansa felt it tactically best to not know about half their fighting forces.

Not DEM at all, for the very reason you note. They foreshadowed it so heavily the only suspense was which characters would die before Littlefinger would show up.

Tatts early in SH game: Hmm, so if I'm liberal I should have voted Nein to make sure I'm president? I'm not that selfish

Tatts later in SAME game: I'm going to be a corrupt official. I have turned from my liberal ways, and now will vote against the pesky liberals. Viva la Fascism.
When Venge's turn comes, he will get a yes from Mess, Dolmen, Nevyn and Venge but a no from the 3 fascists and me. **** with my Government, and i'll **** with yours
