Not sure if I have missed it - has there been any hints to the significance of the flash backs? Or hints of where they are going with it in the show?

All my non-book friends have no idea where the flashbacks are heading that's all.

But the show has buried it well. As I said, they are more winks and leading on people who know the theory than anything a tv viewer only is that likely to pick up on.

And many of those "winks and hints" can be replayed in the montage that begins every episode now (as several were in the Tower of Joy swordfight flashback episode... including Littlefinger's smirk in the tomb).

I know some are bummed at the Tower of Joy cutting away, but I think it's a pretty clever way of doing it for people who have no inkling of the theory. Hearing her scream = she must be in danger. Surprise! it's actually childbirth.

Actually, I'm not disappointed, although I think its a funny tease.

I mentioned before that I was surprised they would have Bran see Tower of Joy before the tourney.

Makes sense this way. Now they can do the tourney, and give Bran the inkling that R and L were into each other. Then go back to the Tower and the promise.
Tatts early in SH game: Hmm, so if I'm liberal I should have voted Nein to make sure I'm president? I'm not that selfish

Tatts later in SAME game: I'm going to be a corrupt official. I have turned from my liberal ways, and now will vote against the pesky liberals. Viva la Fascism.
When Venge's turn comes, he will get a yes from Mess, Dolmen, Nevyn and Venge but a no from the 3 fascists and me. **** with my Government, and i'll **** with yours

I did not think the ep was slow. I loved it. Best one yet.

Mostly because no Sand Snakes, but also because the pace was ramping up too much. 9 deaths in 3 eps, counting Shaggydog. Many just quick quick things and we lose a relevant character. Season 1 was nothing like that. You can't leave behind all the chatter and intrigue and just have sword fights and murders. When done well slower episodes can be better than Blackwater or the attack on Castle Black.

Was disappointed in tonight's episode. It feels like it was really short, for one thing; even the 'inside the episode' stuff was over by the end of the hour. And since I was hoping they would go back to the Tower of Joy, I felt cheated. They really shouldn't have hyped us for the Tower of Joy on Mother's Day if they weren't going to give us the goods.

Each week the episode seems to just fly by, this felt like a filler episode and nothing else.

The two good moments was the sword battle and the council scene.

Didn't Ned remember killing Arthur Dayne personally? Maybe not. That's not so important to me, but it had the feel of being a B&W idea. In any case, I'm glad they didn't cut Howland Reed.

Bran mentions this and says that Ned killed Arthur Dayne, but that is something Ned must have been saying to his family (I don't know how this affects his "honour")

RIP Shaggydog. :p

Still not convinced Jon has left the Watch for good. I figure he's just having a moment. His role is still against the White Walkers; he just has to consolidate the North first.

Was anyone else hoping Frankenmountain would bash Pycelle's head against a wall?

I think they need to free Jon up to do what he needs to do rather than stay in one place.

And why didn't Cersei/Jaime just order the man mountain to fucking kill every fucker in that room, their uncle included?

I hate the High Sparrow. He talks sense but he is a fucking dick.

Huh. I don't love the heel turn of the Umbers, but that's just affection from the books I suppose. Plus I imagine what's left of the House are those who didn't ride south with Robb anyway? What I did like about that scene is that Ramsay finally has an outside world to deal with. He's been a big fish in a much smaller pond than he understands, and there's a whole wide world of people who aren't scared of him. Also while the Rickon stuff is indeed bigtime condensing, I think he's gonna come out of it ok. After Theon and Sansa, they can't go back to that well a third time without flipping it. And if Ghost eats Ramsay that'll be poetic canine justice.

The line that made me laugh a few times.

"You're a cunt"

brilliant! loved it.

Great to see Ghost do that, if it happens, poor direwolves!

Well, in the books, sansa never went to Winterfell.
Yesterday, upon the stair, I saw a man who wasn't there. He wasn't there again today. Oh, how I wish he'd go away.

Am I reading too much into this? I wouldn't be surprised if the show is taking the Hound=valonqar route while GRRM is taking the Jaime=valonqar route. For example.

Valonqar?

Also why does Cersei have to die?

In the prophecy of Maggy the frog that Cersei received when she was a kid, one of the predictions (apart from all her children dieing before her) was that 'the valonqar (meaning 'little brother') shall wrap his hands around your throat and choke you' or something like that.

Cersei always assumed that the little brother/valonqar was Tyrion, which is why she hates and fears him. But it could of course also be Jaime. Hadn't heard the 'Hound' suggestion before, but I guess the Hound is the Mountain's little brother and it doesn't actually say your little brother in the prophecy, so it could work. Still seems unlikely though. I would put my money on Jaime.

Actually there has been a lot of speculation that Valonqar may mean any little brother, so we have had crackpot theories about it being the Hound, Loras, Bran, Rickon, Tommen, fAegon, Trystane... basically any and every little brother

Well, he has a metal hand so that probably still counts.

That's why I said 'show version'.

I remember a while back b+w said that they'd only put Sansa in Winterfell because they couldn't have her sitting in the Eyrie for a season doing nothing; so I guess that whole story arc was all just filler. The result of which makes Littlefingers planning seem nonsensical, whereas (I hope) thatnin the books, he's working covertly on something of more import, and Sansa will have a better purpose than just a filler.

So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

A truly horrifying thought!

Don't see why they could not abandon Sansa for a season. They abandoned bran for one

A new excerpt from TWOW has been released, and it's set in Dorne.

http://www.georgerrm...inds-of-winter/

I can't read it because his site is overloaded. Maybe this warrants its own thread. Has anyone managed to read it?

PS: I got it to load. Woo, this is the Arianne chapter that was read aloud at some con or another and which has Ser Addam Whitehead in it. :D Wert is finally official...

I'm good, but I did warn in the subtitle of this thread that it's fair game for spoilers including TWOW early chapters. Some of those have been discussed already, in this thread or the season 5 thread, or both.

I wouldn't worry about it too much; these early TWOW chapters are not too eventful.

Its off that everyone now knows it's ser Gregor! Pycelle even claims some unnatural experiment was performed! The whole vow of silence was to hide the fact that he is some kind of magic zombie. It's actually just bizarre that it's not more of an issue.

Also where was Ser Hightower? Maybe delivering the baby? Still odd
