Okay investing nerds. What the ever loving eff is "Dogecoin"? And why does it use that Shiba Inu dog meme as its branding logo? Oh, and is pronounced dodge-coin (like the sound from dodgeball) or dough-ge-coin (like the sound from the stuff you bake)?

'Doge' is to 'dog' as 'stonks' are to 'stocks'....

I was a little tempted to put a tiny amount into Dogecoin before Musk's SNL appearance and cash out a bit before it. Glad I didn't though; it actually went down the day of his appearance (granted, with some small and short-lived upward bumps within the overall downtrend).

This is very much a case of 'well yes but actually no'. I was given 50 Doge and put another 30 in. The buildup to SNL brought it to about 140 in value, post-SNL it was down to about 90, and since it's hovering at around 110, which is a reasonably normal value for it. There's not really been a major downtrend beyond the initial crash.

Meanwhile my Ethereum continues to appreciate - I'm up by 14 over the last fortnight. Seems like one to sit on long term.

Going by the graph one would have had to buy before Tuesday at 8 AM EST to be up at all by now. Though anyone who bought some after news of his SNL appearance first spread---looks like about April 26th---would have almost doubled their money.

Dogecoin is going to the moon:

Posted Image

Meanwhile I've spent this year dutifully selling off some DHI to diversify, but it keeps beating the market by a wide margin... I'd have 'made' more doing nothing. Granted, it's no Dogecoin (for better or worse...). More importantly my time horizon is 5+ years, so it doesn't really matter much ('it's doom alone that counts').

I'm assuming it will continue to yo-yo for a few weeks, and then stabilise. Someone who apparently has a lot of pull said they were going to short it and did, but that just means now wouldn't be an awful time to pick up a bit more.

Drunk Macros was very rude. I'm not happy about it, yet it's a one off.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

Naturally the day after I finally got around to posting that it started plunging... down almost 10% by this morning but it's rebounding a little. Still 'beating the market' but in the wrong direction....

I've been skeptical of its rise because it historically traded much lower, around 30-50 (I bought around 7). But most analysts seem to have been concluding that it's undervalued---first estimate I read was price target 160. Second, more conservative estimate 110. Peaked a few days ago around 107. Just read a more recent analysis though that says it's undervalued... if the historical price is factored in (but how to weight it? how to weigh sentiments' momentums?).

The lumber shortage has been giving it a competitive advantage over smaller homebuilders. Not sure whether Biden's plan will do much to help 'small business' compete with the largest ones. End of the lumber shortage should bring down price of building homes, so stock will probably still go up (relative to what it would have otherwise) as a consequence.

'Elon Musk Suspends Tesla Bitcoin Purchases Over Environmental Concerns

"We are concerned about rapidly increasing use of fossil fuels for Bitcoin mining and transactions, especially coal, which has the worst emissions of any fuel. Cryptocurrency is a good idea on many levels and we believe it has a promising future, but this cannot come at great cost to the environment. Tesla will not be selling any Bitcoin and we intend to use it for transactions as soon as mining transitions to more sustainable energy." His tweet sent the value of the cryptocurrency into a nosedive.'

https://www.thedaily...=cheats&via=rss

'Dogecoin [...] may be one of the most environmentally-friendly cryptocurrencies [...]

[...] reviewed each of the major cryptocurrencies to see how many kilowatt-hours were consumed per transaction. This is based on the energy needed to produce the algorithms that produce the cryptocurrency.

[...] the report found Dogecoin to be second on the list, only behind the cryptocurrency XRP.'

https://www.deseret....ment-energy-use

Especially if it's being mined on the moon. (Kidding... I think.)

Perhaps this is the true meaning of Dogecoin. Save us from the governments while only destroying the environment a little.

'We must go to Mars... to mine more Dogecoin.'

Bitcoin, altcoins and shitcoins aside.

Back to shares.

I've plumped a bit (some of the money that I made on the GameStop shenanigans) into Europcar. Now I got in at about 0.28 before they announced their consolidation of debts and restructuring. My logic being if it survives the pandemic it was a viable company before and should be after, the arse fell out of its price because tourism died.
It's slowly climbing now as things are opening.

Is there a market for hunting out other companies crippled in the same way, or did I luck out with my guess on survival just?

Tried to catch the falling knife

Now my new buys are all a streak of red,

But they've already begun to rise

Again like glacial gasses past the walking dead.

(Assuming that this isn't just

A dead cat bouncing through the dust)

(Context:

Rotation from 'pandemic stocks' (broadly defined) into 'reopening' plays makes this short-term underperformance expected though. Still the red column (of losses) is... a stimulating sight.)
