Well it was inevitable but it’s crashed by 80%. I imagine a lot of the little redditors got burned. Time will tell.

The volume is tiny, most of those short positions wont have closed. We'll see what happens. It's still 10x what it was 3 months ago, but yea we'll see what happens.

I'd imagine lots of people did/will get burned but the squeeze hasn't ended yet unless a ton of the little 'retail' investors are cashing out, and it doesn't like like it.

THIS.

The big boys and hedge funds have been trading back and forth (as I understand it) to artificially shove the price down (called "Short ladder attacks"), there are still tones of retail investors holding. Until those shorts are called due, this will keep playing out like this. It's a game of attrition where the hedge funds pull this ladder shit to make the retailers balk and sell.

And Obi is right, some have been and will get burned, no doubt...but those hedges will hemorrhage a massive amount of cash before this is over. And from what I can tell, most people on WSB's seem to have only played with money they could afford to lose and are in this for the "fuck you"

Short ladder attacks are not real.

It's just a new term for what's going on market manipulation-wise, but it's very much a real thing. Here's Jim Cramer describing it years ago. Just because it only recently got a name doesn't mean it's not a tactic being employed.

Add in the fact that many brokers stopped allowing retail investors to trade while letting the hedges still do so...as an extra layer of market manipulation.

Hearing today before congressional committee with the particulars associated with the GameStop situation. Anticipating a lot of awkward questions that reveal generational ignorance about fintech.

There's another run in progress on GameStop?

How can there be like 150% of shares sold in a stock?

I really don't get the wallstreet finaces at all.

You're over here thinking logically and not about how to get all the money out of the stock market, everyone else be damned.

Because you can sell shares you don't own.

Basically when you are shorting a stock, you are entering into an agreement to borrow the share from someone, to sell the share now and in return you must return the stock at a later date.

Say Stock A is selling for 100$ right now, and you short it, you borrow that stock from someone else and then sell it immediately. You have 100$ in cash, and you owe that person a stock.

Now at the date by which you need to return it, let's say the stock is trading at 50$. You buy the stock at 50$, return it to your lender, and you made 50$ profit.

Now lets assume that rather than trading at 50$, when its exercise date the stock is now trading at 150$. You are forced to buy it off the market to return it, and rather than making money, you have lost money.

This is a simplified example of how shorting works. As for 150% of shares, basically people just borrow the stock from other people who then borrow it to other people is the simple version.

The article below goes into a bit more detail.

Nom fungible tokens that say you own fungible digital data! This is pure money laundering bullshit or am I insane? Someone owns a digital artwork for 69 million? But anyone can copy it?

Also the non fungible token is on one specific blockchain, anyone could make a rival chain and make a new NFT.

With HD 3D video and AR/VR becoming widely accessible, it's not that different from owning a physical artwork but allowing photographs / video etc. Even aside from the experience of the artwork, the art market is mostly about speculation and (secondarily) showing off wealth. At the high end it's 'outperformed' the stock market. (Not sure how much of that might be money laundering... if NFTs can be bought with crypto and if the art market actually is significantly fueled by money laundering, that might make them more attractive. OTOH my guess is it will turn out to be more of a fad, but it's hard to know....)

You go to an auction & out comes the Picasso, dead silence. Once the hammer comes down on the price, applause. We live in a world where they applaud the price but not the Picasso. -Fran Lebowitz, Pretend It's a City
