EDIT: I really enjoy this description:

Quote

The fourth instalment of George Miller’s punky post-apocalyptic ‘Mad Max’ saga feels like a tornado tearing through a tea party. In an age of weightless movie spectacles, here’s a movie that feels like it was made by kidnapping $150 million of studio money, fleeing with it to the Namibian desert, and sending footage back to Hollywood like the amputated body parts of a ransomed hostage.

It's a continuation AFAIK. And may or may not ignore BEYOND THUNDERDOME and just chase ROAD WARRIOR as a narrative instead.

It's both a continuation and a reboot. I gather it's basically supposed to be a myth-type Bondian thing where each film is a story of the same character but not directly connected.

I've never seen a previous Mad Max film and it didn't matter at all so it's not particularly relevant.

Anyway, it's really awesome.

Just saw it.

It was like getting smacked in the face with a baseball bat of awesome for 2 hours! Loved Hardy's take on Max. Loved Charlize as Furiosa. Best female action character since Ripley , no question. Production design, cinematography, world building, even the flippin' score was crazed. The stunts!! You can't convince me that there aren't unmarked stuntman graves all over that desert.

I also loved that they didn't hit you over the head with character back story. Almost like reading Erikson you got to figure things out for yourself. Can't wait to see it again. George Miller just mic dropped every action hack in the last thirty years.

Sir I salute you.

Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

I love Gareth Edwards and I think that in ten years he might be up for making a movie like this. The Raid is great, themes of brotherhood really help make you care about those characters, but is kind of telegraphed to you.

Here you even have a a despotic tyrant in Immortan Joe that Miller somehow manages to give shades of development to.

Not to mention building and evolving an entire world: the look, the transportation, the weapons, the religion.

Hell he even take the time to have someone match the right ammunition to the right gun. What's the last movie you saw that didn't have a magic gun that never runs out of bullets until it's needed as a plot device?

Hit girl is a fun character. That is about it.

I agree, the overall storytelling here is excellent. He's definitely better at that than Gareth Edwards right now (though there are aspects of The Raid 2, bloated though it is, that suggest he'll be able to learn rather quickly). As pure action though, I think The Raid outdoes Mad Max. Just a little.

In terms of that kind of subtle implied storytelling, the best action film I can think of recently is Dredd. That's as good a film as this, though the action isn't nearly as unrelenting.

John Wick.

Hit Girl is a fantastic character. And Kick-Ass in general is the best action-type film since The Matrix. This comes close, and is much more of a pure action film, but it ain't quite on that level.

Saw this last week. It's a work of insane genius.

A film that only stops running forward at breakneck speed from time to time because the director realises you may need to draw some breath. Some jawdroppingly beautiful images. It simultaneously makes no sense whatsoever whilst making perfect sense.

It's also interesting that one could (and I would) argue that this is an explicitly feminist film. The women in it have agency. They want and need things that are about themselves. They are not objects. I believe it has taken a certain amount of flak from the MRA Neanderthals for just this reason.

Also, it's an even handed film. Even the appalling monster that is the antagonist gets some humanisation. And there is also the tragedy at the heart of Nicholas Hoult's character
Spoiler

This may be the best film of the year. It's certainly the best action movie I've seen for a long time.

If an opinion contrary to your own makes you angry, that is a sign that you are subconsciously aware of having no good reason for thinking as you do. If some one maintains that two and two are five, or that Iceland is on the equator, you feel pity rather than anger, unless you know so little of arithmetic or geography that his opinion shakes your own contrary conviction. … So whenever you find yourself getting angry about a difference of opinion, be on your guard; you will probably find, on examination, that your belief is going beyond what the evidence warrants. Agreed with Stone Monkey. I can't think of many recent action films that come even close to this in marrying plot, character development, world building and action together.

Remarkably well drawn and developed characters for such limited screen time. I hope more directors take there inspiration from this.

Tom Hardy continues to prove he's an amazing individual by shutting down the asinine Toronto Star critic Peter Howell who not only asks a sexist question, but couched it with an "I'm not a sexist but..." type of preface.

http://uproxx.com/ga...-max-fury-road/

I already don't care for Howell or his reviews (which are never balanced), this makes me just outright loathe him.

So, after enjoying Fury Road so much, I decided to watch the first Mad Max on Sunday. I really did not enjoy it - it was too weird and practically unintelligible. However, I decided to watch Road Warrior last night, and that was a massive improvement over the first.

While I haven't yet watched Thunderdome, I feel like Miller has gotten better with each film he's done.

Saw it this afternoon.

It is an example of cinematic perfection as far as I'm concerned.

I should note, I'm SUPER impressed that not only does every woman featured in it have agency...and aside from Charlize Theron just basically kicking ass (indeed at a Ripley-level if not moreso, sorry PG) for two straight amazing hours...but the fact that Max spends the first probably 20-25 minutes as the damsel-in-distress makes this the most splendidly feminist flick that's come out...probably since CASINO ROYALE flipped all the sexist Bond tropes on their head. And that just makes me love it more.

I sure do hope that they make another. EDIT: And if they do, I hope that Furiosa is front and center in that one too.

Also, George Miller's editor, Margret Sixel, should be praised to the nines. She absolutely made the film sing in every single damned frame.

I think StoneMonkey is right...this may end up as the film of the year for me. It's going to take the summer tentpoles a LOT to beat this perfection in my eyes...the only thing that MAY have a chance is Star Wars in December.

This movie is so good it almost created its own genre. Compare the action in this movie to the action in other "action" movies and realize that nothing else is even in the same ballpark.
