Ah, the troublesome underbelly of my hometown.

They haven't disappeared, just far less active. I went to school with someone who used to brag about his dad being part of it.... with clearly not enough brain cells to understand why that wasn't something to brag about!

The extent of my English football knowledge comes from TED LASSO viewing, and a single episode of THE IT CROWD where they talk about West Ham, and a "pony on Liverpool" and "did you see that ludicrous display last night? What was Wenger finking sending Walcott off that early?"

Truly hilarious episode! That's pretty much all my wife knows about football... If I'm talking about it with someone she'll pipe in with "What was Wenger thinking..."

TRB, I read a fascinating book from a guy who used to be a main player in the BBC and he talked about how it was a family and an identity (and there's even a sort of morality in that his lot looked down on the Leeds crew because they were racist etc) one of the main things I found it was that it's almost not about the football, it's about the passion and belonging and getting one over the other firms...

That being said, they're still a bunch of monumental bellends...

The way I've summarised it so far by example is:

I am a Blades fan. I go to a Wednesday pub on matchday, and say as loudly as I can "all Wednesday fans are cunts!".

This places me in a situation where I will expect to have to defend myself, but was otherwise entirely avoidable. In short, shit-stirring. First thing a Judge here would ask me is "Why were you even there?"

Kyle Rittenhouse drawing the names of the jurors who will decide the verdict. Is that something that normally happens? I don't follow criminal trials, so I'm in the dark on procedure and how these things normally procede, but that seemed odd to me. Is this Judge making it up as he goes? And if so, there most certainly will be cracks opened for after verdict options to be explored, right?

I don't even like football, I was literally just using the Blades / Owls as an example. You could also use Celtic and Rangers for the example. The core of the point is, travelling to a gathering of people who you are diametrically opposed to and purposefully causing trouble will do just that - cause trouble.

Seeing lots of rumblings that acquittal will lead to further riots. And I can see why - when the core of the riots was 'stop murdering us', and the kid goes out to bag himself some libs off of it, such a judgement is a slap in the face to the original cause.

It's not at all standard procedure and this judge has been running his court like a goddamn baron running his fiefdom far from the king's eye. That's not unusual, but you'd think he'd at least clean it up for national media attention he knew was happening.

I am still on the fence. I used to live inHillsborough so I have been to a few Wednesday matches, but these days I live on the other side of town and everyone here is Blades-fan. So I will probably visit Bramall Lane sometime in the near future.
Yesterday, upon the stair, I saw a man who wasn't there. He wasn't there again today. Oh, how I wish he'd go away.

Come, come join the dourness and pessimism. That said I havent been down the lane in years and years.

On topic, the Rittenhouse trial looks like a clusterfuck waiting to happen.

That judge is basically saying, hey guys, take your guns to protests and meetings of people you are diametrically opposed to and shoot them, it's all good.

How is this possible. The gun he carried, I thought it was clear cut that if nothing else he owned it illegally? How can there be no punishment at all?

Meanwhile in Florida (and almost certainly elsewhere): 'Florida Prison Guards "Openly Tout" White Supremacist Ties to Scare Inmates [...] Corrections officials “regularly receive reports about guards’ membership in the Ku Klux Klan and criminal gangs,” but “few cases” are investigated [...] three Florida prison guards “who boasted of being white supremacists” beat, pepper sprayed, and tased an inmate who screamed, “I can’t breathe!” [...] The next day, they allegedly did it again to another inmate. Both incidents were reportedly carried out in plain view of security cameras, but no one ever investigated either incident [...] “I feel like a Jew in a consetration [sic] camp,” the inmate who saw the assaults wrote [...] “That’s the best comparison I can make.”'

Disheartening, depressing, anger inducing and utterly unsurprising.
