Morgan Freeman is an Icon. For a period Cuba Gooding was a sensation. There are many Black actors in Hollywood that are doing well. They appeal to an audience well beyond the 10% of America that is black.

Yeah, but those guys hardly ever headline the really big-budget tentpoles. Whether it's down to the audience, or down to Hollywood's unfair perception of the audience, is open to debate, but the fact is that Will Smith is the only black actor who's regularly headlined the massive blockbusters. Denzel's come closest but he's still nowhere near. Fucking Sam Worthington has been in more $100+mil-budget films than him.

How about the FAST & FURIOUS films? They are a great example that grinds against your statement PG. Multi-lead cast, Vin Diesel (he's not aware of his ethnicity specifically, but self-identifies as a POC), Paul Walker (White), Ludacris (Black), Tyrese Gibson (Black), Michelle Rodriguez (Spanish), Jordana Brewster (white), Dwayne Johnson (Black & Samoan), Sung Kang (Asian). That's a pretty amazingly diverse cast and those movies are bonkers successful at the box office. We are literally going into a year where the SEVENTH installment in the franchise is dropping and it's fixing to be the biggest success of them all. They ALL feature on the posters, and they usually ALL feature namewise in both posters and trailers.

I think that shows at LEAST a counterpoint to the idea that studios are afraid of having POC leads in tentpole movies...or that audiences aren't willing to patronize them with cash. For at least the last 3 FAST films (4-6) I've been in theatres that are packed to the gills with people.

Denzel has two exactly 100 million budget movies and Worthington is on 5+ that are well over 100 million with most being 150 million plus.

Terminator Salvation, Clash of Titans, Avatar, Wrath of Titans, Avatar 2 and whichever Avatars are made after that.

That's a point there.

Three of those tanked. And they partially tanked because Worthington can't hold the lead. Worhtington was hired off his AVATAR-success for three of the films you cite...end of. And they have since realized their mistake as he's not been in (much less HEADLINED) much since then. He was hired for those big budget films not because he's good, but because they could pay him WAY less than another action star (since he was a newbie) and spend the budget on effects. All off ppl liking AVATAR.

He's a poor example.

Denzel has two Oscars (he's already better than Worthington), and he's not exactly in his prime for "action" roles anymore. But needless to say a fair number of his roles have pulled down double their budget (FLIGHT is one of these....it tripled it in box office earnings). Hollywood is not scared to use him or have him as lead...they just don't put him in action roles anymore because he's older, but he's still a lead actor and has been since the 90's.

I guess I owe an apology,

I have to say I'm surprised. Clash of the titans and wrath of the titans being 100 million dollar budget movies or regarded as successful is shocking. I checked both of there filmographies before I posted and Denzel's has its own Wiki page and I recognized many. I could not recognise any of Sam's but the above.

Edit- I went to look at Denzel's movies and now I have to wonder if this comparison is even a worthy measure. Denzels movies are cheap because they are movies about a man's struggles (Malcolm X, Man on Fire, The Hurricane) or are set in the real world (Pelham 123). The budgets of all of Sam's movies are in the hundreds but that money is spent to make them special effects blockbusters, got nothing to do with him.

Edit- Vin Diesel is a person of colour? I also have to say I love the cultural differences of PC terminology. I say black, not African American. From my point of view (Nations background) Obama is coloured not black. Yet to call someone a person of colour would be odd and rude.

The Fast & Furious films are a great thing and hopefully will pave the way for more of their ilk, but they're very much an exception at the moment. And their elevation to mega-budget happened more-or-less by accident and after much perseverance - they've been making well over 100 mil right from the start, but it took the fifth one to elevate the budget to anything like that. Universal kept cranking them out and they kept making money, but it took an awful lot of time for them to really realise what they had on their hands and put budget and marketing behind it.

For the record, I very much tend to the opinion that the situation is the way it is because the majority of studios are run by out-of-touch white men, not because of audience taste - but the studios control what the audience spend money on both by making it in the first place and by the all-important marketing budget allocation.

It is changing, of course it is. But it could change faster.

They may have tanked critically, but Terminator Salvation made $300mil at the box office, and Clash of the Titans made nearly $500mil, well over double its budget, while Wrath made $300 as well.

Eta: and he was cast in both Terminator and Titans well before Avatar ever came out. He was just the darling of someone with a lot of power at that time, for some reason.

We're not talking about whether these actors deserve to be headlining or who's better acclaimed. No-one in their right minds would argue that Sam Worthington is a better actor or more deserving star than Denzel. If anything that's the whole point- one keeps being put into vehicles that cost and earn tons more money than the other, and it has nothing to do with respective talent or reputation.

I've been appalling myself reading the lists of highest budget movies and highest grossing movies and going down the list until I found a movie without a white protagonist. That first link you have to go down to 69 to find a non-white non-Will Smith lead, and it's Vin Diesel. The second? Even if you open it up to at least one side character who isn't white, it's honestly sobering. kill whitey Hollywood is fucked.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

I started doing that too Illy (after reading responses in this thread), and it's pretty roundly upsetting, I agree.

If you want to help feel better, look outside Hollywood at film. Attending the Film Festival for so many years has apparently spoiled me as I get a global film taste every year, with leads and such of every ethnicity. And it REALLY casts Hollywood in an even WORSE light. Most of the stuff I see and love at TIFF comes from other countries. Sadly, most of the critical darling films get praised and then forgotten after the festival circuit (See: MANDELA). I think certain film industries that are non-Hollywood are getting bigger and more successful but it's a slow burn and it's hard to fight against a juggernaut like that who dominate the theatres in any given city or town.

I luck out in Toronto because we not only have the TIFF lightbox (which is the Film Fest theatre they built that shows worldwide stuff all year, but we also have a HUGE chain theatre in the middle of the entertainment district that shows about 30 screens, and 15 of them are usually foreign stuff (Bollywood usually, and Asian action flicks)...so at least I get a chance to spread out my viewing...most places don't have that.

Still, it's very upsetting. Even if I list off ALL the successful black actors there are only a handful compared to the white ones. This thread has been enlightening in that regard, because I think I've always thought that there were more...and there aren't.

SIDEBAR: RE: Worthington...did anyone know that he apparently auditioned to play Bond in CASINO ROYALE? Jeebus that would have been bad!

I really, really like Toronto's commitment to showing awesome movies from around the world. It's done better than what NYC or LA do and I need to make my way out there for a TIFF.

I started looking up Bollywood stuff to see if there were anything to bring over. What we see over there is extremely-cheap-by-Hollywood-standards movies (under $10 million) making $50 to 80 million in official revenue with probably a bit more unofficial (piracy being huge in South Asia).

They don't have anything like the comics franchises here and eagerly watch these movies. However, every decade or so, there's a re-imagining of the huge Hindu religious/mythological epics on TV or in film. Those are kinda at the level of the 1970s era Clash of the Titans level effects and action choreography, but they're moderate hits in India/Nepal because sooooooo many people watch them daily. In 30 years, these epics should be pretty damn impressive onscreen if the technology/standards for CGI keep rising.

You really should. It's well worth a trip and a week of movie viewing.

Nope. I will never tire of watching him, and he's utterly a perfect choice for Strange. :The Force:

But he IS in a lot recently so I can see people getting sick of him.

Word is if Marvel (ie MCU) gets its hands on Spider-Man in a split w/ Sony, Andrew Garfield is out, and the character might even weave his way into the franchises that already exist.
