made me just sit slack jawed in amazement until I read it 2-3 more times. Shocking that there was a book in this series where someone one-upped Nona in a moment of bad-assery.

I finished Holy Sister and I loved it.

I thought the whole focus moon thing would have more of a solution. For some reason I thought the whole problem with the ice was because the focus moon was narrowing the area of the planet it focused its heat on and that the solution was to get control of it to open it back up so it could melt all of the ice. I am also confused as to how Nona plans on using the moon now that she has no access to the ark or all four shiphearts.

I guess I just have to wait for the next trilogy.I also read One Word Kill. I did not love it as much but I really read it quickly because I had to know what happened.

I found this confusing too, but I assumed the ark (or maybe just the moon, or whatever network Taproot might be using) must somehow be able to hear Cage basically wherever she goes and is still set to obey her commands.

At the end they talk about using the Moon to focus down the beam and burn the ice off a mile at the time... if that doesn't work at least having control of the moon, they have bought themselves time to try different ideas...


I may be wrong but I think it is a case that they go to the Emperor and say give me access if you want to live... plus the fact that only Nona can control it after Zole gives the command, the Emperor would have little choice but to let them use the device.


The biggest takeaway I had came with "I am Taproot." That was a totally holy shit moment... literally two paragraphs before I'd said to myself that this tech is starting to sound more and more like Jorg and his "Viewing Ring," especially when they are zooming in with the Ark tech.
Then the Taproot comment I was like aaaahhhhhhhhhhh!!!


So...what the hell timeline are we looking at with Doctor Taproot, no way that is a coincidence. Is he one of the Missing? That is where my thoughts are at the minute. Left this dying world to travel to Jorg Earth? Or was he a traveller from Jorg Earth who came to Abeth and left his "Ghost" behind?!


Also, I noticed lowercase taproot is entwined with the religion of the Ancestor and the tree (obviously), a root back to the beginning, another well placed nod I wonder?

I have ONE WORD KILL and LIMITED WISH on my kindle ready to read, and preordered DISPEL ILLUSION as well. Trying to decide if I wait till the 3rd drops onto my kindle and read them all at once, or read the first two and then wait for delivery of my pre-order...

Also, yes, Red Queens War is Lawrence's greatest work. I could re-read that series a bunch of times. BK, get on that!

Finsihed. Enjoyed it. I'm wondering if some of the enjoyment is lost by Lawrence playing some of the secrets and lore building too close his chest though. The idea of the clarified is new and though it uses aspects that have been building since book one it also came out of nowehere. Still there is a companion trilogy to this trilogy same as broken empire so we will see where that goes.

Just one page previous Mark Lawrence seems to be saying that broken earth and this trilogy are separate but when the AI said I am taproot my first thought was Dr Taproot?

My wild conjecture at this moment is that abeth may be earth. The four tribes didn't leave earth to colonize a new planet, they returned from somewhere to come back to earth. This might explain why the old stones (belong to the missing) and the Arks (belong to the four tribes) seem to be intimately connected. Why would the Arks make use of missing technology otherwise. So the missing is ancient humanity and the four tribes are recent humanity

There is also a comment in the end where Nona says her ancestors were looking for a planet with a young sun, so why would they land on a planet that had a dying sun? Perhaps the planet was considered special for some reason

I would guess Mark L laughs himself silly at our conjecture!

I think before we were told 'the moon is falling' Implying its orbit was decaying and as a result it was reflecting light onto a smaller area causing the corridor to shrink. This was the speculation of people who no longer have an idea what the focus moon really is or how it works though.

Instead the moon seems to be working as intended, the problem is the sun is continuing to die so the moons total output is weakening in relation to the sun (its souce). In order to remain effective it has to focus that output into a smaller area. The problem now is that if it narrows the focus further it will cause damage.

This last part is what troubles me though. If the sun is weakening it should be able to shrink the focus and the total output to area covered would be the same. I have also always been skeptical of the idea that the focus moon sweeping along the equator would make a significant difference. The focus mean seems to sweep past in a minute or two. It blasts out a lot of heat but then moves on, the heat would radiate away and for the most part Id expect a localized increase in temperature would not last long at all. Not sure. Id be curious if there is any literature that covers this topic, where Mark may have got the idea.

The Ark wasn't created by the Missing, and I don't think the use of the stones as a power source is strong evidence that the Missing were ancient humanity. The stones simply have concentrated magical energy. Perhaps that's what drew the ships to Abeth.
