The sword shivered in his hand. The soldier stumbling beside him fell away, his shield split.
Gasping, Spinnock Durav pushed on. Anomander Rake – do you witness this? Do you look into these faces – all these faces behind me?
'This time! Strangers fight in your name! Strangers die for you! Your cause – not theirs!'
CRACK!
The reverberation shoved him forward, shivered through him like something holy. 'Children of Dark, humans are dying in your name!'
CRACK!
The very air trembled with that concussion. A torrent of water – clinging to high branches, to needles and leaves – shook loose and rained down in an answering hiss.
Ahead, Spinnock could hear fighting.
Do you see, Anomander? Old friend, do you see?
This is our war.
CRACK!
Through the boles a glimmer of falling light. A vast shape lifting high. The sudden roar of a dragon.
Gods, no, what have they done?
CRACK!
Spinnock joins the battle at The First Shore...
Quote
She had selected a polished jet stone from her modest collection – knowing how the humans would smile at that, these small leather bags the Tiste Andii always carried, with a stone to mark each gift of the owner's heart. She possessed but a few. One for Anomander Rake, one for her fallen brother, Orfantal; one for Spinnock Durav – who cared nothing for her low birth – and one for Whiskeyjack. Soon, she had begun to suspect, she would set out to find two more. For Queen Yan Tovis. For Lord Nimander.
Did Spinnock die at the battle? Perhaps. It seems like Korlat is being maudlin here; three of the first four names we know are characters that have died. It seems like she's thinking that she will eventually have to deal with Yan Tovis' and Nimander's death as well. She's not in a good frame of mind anyway.
Then this from Assail:

'And your memories?'
'With me once more.'
'Then,' Fisher asked, 'would you give us your name?'
'Mother Dark offered a title.'
Fisher's breath caught. He spoke low, as if not daring to say the words aloud: 'Son of Darkness …'
Jethiss gestured, inviting them to descend with him. 'Now more of an honorific, in truth.'
Much like Korlat's Sister of Cold Nights title, or Tyvar's title of Mortal Sword
...and...

'There was a terrible battle,' Jethiss murmured aloud as they descended. 'At the feet of a gate. I wandered lost for an unknown time. A woman's voice spoke to me from the Eternal Night. She told me I was needed to stand as I had before. But that the cost would be great. That I would have to lose myself to find myself anew.' He pressed a hand to Fisher's shoulder. 'And so I have. My old name no longer fits. I am Jethiss. As for the title … we shall see if I prove worthy.'
'Where will you go?' Kyle asked, careful to give the man room as he walked at his left side.
'I would travel to Coral,' Jethiss answered. 'There is a modest barrow there I would pay my respects to. A good friend. Many evenings we spent together playing Kef Tanar.' He offered them a smile. 'I would be honoured if you would accompany me.'
The battle? It's the battle at the First Shore. Of course we're also meant to interpret it as the battle with Chaos' army in Dragnipur, so the intent to confuse is obvious. But the rest of the passage can only lead to Spinnock.
Jethiss is described as having a shock of silver in his hair (the rest of his hair's color isn't mentioned, of course) but for Rake, that silver color was meant as symbol of his defiance, and was the color of his entire head of hair. Its not unlikely that after wandering and finding himself anew that he gets a little shock of silver himself. Its nicely symbolic.
Then the "...as for the title..." "if I prove worthy" bit, that means if he proves worthy to living up to the standard of Anomander Rake.
And why not Spinnock? If anyone should follow in Rake's steps, I like it to be him. Just as Abyss says, in the Kef Tanar games, he used Rake's gambits. He has always stood in for Rake when Rake could not himself. Its as if he was being groomed for it. Plus I like the finality of Rake's sacrifice. The single most poetic act of selflessness in both series would be cheapened if he gets to come back and do it again, but this time with a bone sword made out of his own arm. (God that is SO cool!)
