Wow. Nice reference, Tiste.

Also re: England v. US: England has the quality of player over the U.S. in general, but I do believe we won our shared group 4 years ago and we advanced out of our group this year.... Both tough groups to be sure.
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

Nah, I think the real conspiracy is Chiellini egging him on by marinading his shoulder prematch.

That's such an old-fashioned decision, maybe something Neuer is required?

Hold on now, with so many options for this menu, we have to Mueller over.

And then ask each other "Howedes?" as we take our first bites.

HOWARD YOU ALL DOING
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

Flipping heck that USA-Belgium game was immense! Well played to the US, and I don't mean that in a condescending way at all. There is a tendency in England to hate the US football team (due to "soccer" or whatever else, maybe the fact that they are generally better than us at "our" game yet the game itself is generally vilified in the States...) Whatever the reason, they were a joy to watch this tournament and our team could definitely learn a thing or two about playing with pride, passion and drive...

The QF's should be flipping ace though... I think sweepstake aside, go Costa Rica!

When you mentioned the tendency in England to hate the US football team, what did you mean when you said "due to 'soccer' " , with 'soccer' in quotes? Is our calling it soccer some sort of insult? Mind you, I'm a very new fan. I've only started watching and attempting to get more into it just the end of last year, so have to forgive my ignorance in certain areas.

The only reason I call it 'soccer' is because that's just the name they have called it around here since I was born. Kinda sucks to be viewed in a negative light for something that was neither intentional, nor something even aware of your whole life.

I guess our country had already used 'football' for American football, so had to call it something. I actually always wondered why we even chose to call American football 'football' anyway. Makes no sense. Only kick the ball with the foot for Field Goals and punts/kick offs. Soccer is more apt to be called 'football' anyway. It's pretty much the perfect name. Still can't see stressing over the use of the term 'soccer,' though.

American athletes are spread among the big three(american football, basketball, and baseball) for the most part. There's just such a huge environment for other sports that are bigger draws than soccer. Almost all of our best athletes are scooped up by American football, basketball, or baseball. The big three spend so much money that there is very little room left for top athletes to focus on soccer as their primary choice.

Soccer is so huge in so many other countries. This attracts their best and brightest athletes. We can't compete with that level of skill produced by that fervor.

I don't think our soccer teams will ever be able to compete at that highest level. The interest just isn't there, and that leaves our world cup teams to always be filled by athletes who aren't among our best.

With that said, PLEASE don't take this as me saying that if we player our best athletes, that we'd win. Not saying that at all. No matter how much better our players would be, it wouldn't diminish the fact that certain countries have teams that are just superb. I'm only saying our teams could be much better if our society wasn't so heavily focused on the big three. I believe we would be much, much better, that's all. Which would equate to escalating from our current level to at least slightly above average. Still shy of reaching elite status.

I think it's just a 'damn Americans calling things wrong names' thing. We Brits get annoyed by it the same way we get annoyed by American use of 'auto' and 'fawcets' instead 'car' and 'taps'. Most of us are sensible enough to know that Gridiron and Association football descend wayback from the same tradition, as does rugby. And no-one has a problem referring to rugby by what is essentially originally also a nickname and is really a short form of 'rugby union football' ('rugby league football' if you're from the north and play or watch the 13 man game). So I think the issue is as much about petty nationalism and the whole 'divided by a common language' thing.
