So I guess they're going to do Ilus after all. Think they'll do Ilus in the first half of the season, then...
Either way, I'm super excited for this season! The entire "landing on Ilus" trailer was just beautiful.

So BK reminded me that The Expanse S4 is returning soon so I went looking for a more fleshed out preview than the teaser trailer from earlier. I am READY for this show now! Hope the link works.

So Season 4 dropping tomorrow is the best birthday present I could ever ask!
Got to say, though... at least as far as seasons 1-3 go, the books blow the series out of the water. Maybe with Amazon budget and management they can get things back on track. Stuffing all of book three into half a season was criminal.

Reading through some recaps, I'm pretty sure theres a lot i dont recall. Thought about doing a rewatch, decided to watch Season 4, then do a full series rewatch before season 5 comes out.

4 episodes in I have to say that they're taking a _ V E R Y _ liberal take at the contents of the book. I'm generally not a big fan of that approach (to put it mildly), but maybe that's required to make it good for TV? I don't know. It's basically about as much of an adaptation as Lucifer at this point.

I just finished season 4! I quite enjoyed it! My main question is: did it cover all of book 4? I'm watching with my GF and she hasn't had time to watch the show, so I'm reading after watching?
I've read/heard things from the authors that, while they try to stay close to the book plot, but they do make changes based on what they and the other writers think will work better on tv or helps move explain the storylines better. From reading books 1-3 I think they were pretty close.

Finished it today. So it picked up after the weird start and got more in line with the source material, overall I really liked it.
I have one gripe with the way that Basia and Lucia basically swapped places (like... why?) and that they made Murtry from an asshole into a moustache twirling villain.
Bonus small gripes with Naomi - shortening her hair cuts (hah) her off from one of her signature mood moves; also, I don't believe the book Naomi would keep her surface weakness from Holden.
There are plotlines in the book that didn't make it to the show. On the other hand, the show added three storylines of its own that aren't in the book (Avasarala's campaign, Bobbie on Mars, Ashford going after the pirates).

Season 4 was AMAZING!!!!!
Everything i wanted and more.
We had everything you could want
Shohreh Aghdashloo stealing every single scene she was in as usual.(you could not have found anyone better)
Amos with mad beard energy.
All with some good old intrigue and human backstabbing.
I particular like the focus on ashford and Drummer and the changing relations between the OPA and the Inner worlds. The one thing that saddens me is

SyFy told them during the writing phase that Season 3 was going to be the last one, so they decided to end the series on a more final (ish) note than halfway through ABADDON'S GATE. However, it may have ultimately been a good move because it means the books line up with the seasons now and they can get the whole show done in 9 seasons rather than the 12-ish the original approach was going to require (and wasn't really necessary once the world was established).

The idea was to foreshadow Ilus in Season 4 by setting him up first. However, for whatever reason, the actor was busy when they shot Season 4 and they decided not to recast and that meant they could go in a different direction with that storyline.
Also worth noting that the book writers are hands-on producers on the show and co-write a lot of the episodes and are in the writers' room. Everything that changes on the show only changes with their approval.

I actually knew that. Perhaps I should've said instead that ending on Season 3 was criminal I'm only butthurt about it because until Babylon's Ashes, Abaddon's Gate was my favorite book of the series, and I hated it getting the short end of the stick. (also while most visualizations in the series are phenomenal, I don't like the way they did the ring space, though I suspect why they did it)

Basia was in Caliban's War as well, and I remembered him. I remember feeling a bit weird about him (wasn't he supposed to be a rather big guy, also dark skinned?) and wondered why they didn't recast (while they recast poor Arjun ). To each his own, I guess.
Mind you... is Felcia an actual spanish-ish name? When reading, taking how Basia's name is a polish female name, that Felcia would be pronounced as in polish instead... I guess hope dies last.

I stand corrected. I never read any of the novellas.
Another thing - how do you folks feel about the invention of Belter Creole as a new language in the series, as opposed to being a dialect glued together from multiple Earth languages in the books?

I wasn't too keen on Book 4, but I've been so excited about Season 4... planning on watching through it as soon as the baby gets a little more chill about letting us watch TV.
