If you haven't read it, I'd recommend checking it out. I always find myself learning new things when I open it up, it's so helpful when I'm trying to figure out how to draw a certain expression. I think it's add to your already strong skills.

That's an incredible resource, Thanks PLUGO and welcome to the empire! always great to have more art discussions going on.

I'm already starting to see what Egwene was saying about the eye, It makes sense as is, but a quick redraw of the eye looking across at Picker connects the two. I'm attempting to bring in some colour, hope to post it up this weekend as the Wife and kid are back and WOW everything must be touched!

The lil girl must have whatever I have in my hands. Cant even get close to the PC, she'll insist I let her up on my lap so she can art as well.

I'm loving this. I think the curly hair, whether it's in the books or not, suits Blend very well.

Also, have some thoughts on the matter that may or may not be too late.. I think they are both a bit older, as already in GotM both are veterans and iirc, Paran thinks of Picker as old. Also, I think that both are from Qoun Tali, mainly because they joined the Bridgeburners before the campaign on Genabackis started, and I'm sure we'd have gotten a mention about it if they were from Seven Cities. Still, Quon Tali seems quite diverse anyway, so that shouldn't be of much importance. Just a thought.

Another thing is that often-cited TtH mention of Picker being old and heavy, BUT it equally often gets overlooked that this description comes from an assassin who's hyping himself up to kill her, and it's later revealed that she's wearing the heavy cloak to hide the weapons beneath it, fully aware of what it makes her look like. That said, I think you got her physique perfectly, just needs a lot more scars.

Also, personally, I've always though of Picker as short-haired and with, I dunno, brownish hair, however, I have no idea why. I like your version anyway :p

Some speculations about the age of Picker and Blend:

Picker is a founding member of the Bridgeburners and probably joined the Malazan Army at the same time as Fiddler as they were still recruits during that time. Fiddler joined the Army +- 1149 BS. So he is during the early books 30-35 years old. (Paran also called him young in the prolog of Gardens of the Moon, 1154 BS)

In the german translation Ben calls Blend often "Mädchen" (= girl). She is possibly younger than Ben and the rest of the old Bridgeburners. Maybe she joined them after 7C or later in Genabackis. (Not sure about that part of the Bridgeburner History)

So I think that both of them are not really old. Just older than Paran. Their age may fit. :p

So I had some time the last few days to try convert to colour.

I'm learning the switch needs to happen mid-painting rather than at the "end" when my grey tones are as good as their gonna get.

The colours come through in the brush work and the early decisions take colour into account leading to better harmony.

Will try fill the background a bit, a few more distant rocks and dry plains vegetation is in order. I'm trolling pinterest for more ideas.

I really liked Puck and Coltaines speculation on age and ethnicity. Made a few tweaks to Picker in light of this.
I hope Picker looks a bit more like a weathered 35 year old war veteran?

Also regarding manug, What colour would you guys consider sickly? the sky in the CGs realm was described as sickly so I want that sickly glow to emanate from behing the rocks.

Yeah she looks like that. And creepy. I would not start a fight with her. Well done

For the light of the realm I would suggest something darker, colder. Maybe violet/purple.

Pale yellow mixed with grey streaks would be sickly imo.

I love the colored versions of Picker and Blend.

Wow, this is looking more and more amazing by the minute, Dolmen! Like how you adjusted Blend's eyes

I was thinking that maybe Munug could look slightly backwards in a shifty kind of way, possibly just the eyes - that would give you more opportunity to get the sickly look in.

Here is his description from the Wiki:

He was described as an old man with a broad forehead, white, wiry eyebrows, a narrow set of features and an almost chinless jaw. His teeth were snaggled, crooked teeth and jutted out in all directions. He had thin legs wrapped in leather and was wearing a threadbare tunic.[3]

Also, he is suffering from some kind of tumour so he should probably look like moving about is difficult and causing him pain.

Hope to be able to get back online soon to see the next stage - the image is evolving like a great story!

New stuff on Greymane and Kyle being done simply because I'm reading RotCG again.

Any quick character sketches you guys want me to try?

Brilliant thread Dolmen! I really like to see the lesser-known/ drawn characters, so that scene with Picker and Blend is extra juicy for me  You did great work with the expressions in particular. Keep it coming!

New stuff on the way,

Started with Kyle and Grey. I'm trying a Maori Viking mix for Kyle. Greymane is looking somewhat badass father christmas but I'm happy with it.

Started a sketch of Spindle and another of Baruk in portrait. Colouring them before I post. Maybe I'll get a chance this friday. My professional exam study schedule kicks into high gear this weekend so no promises. after October I'll have a ton of stuff to post from all my procrastination doodles. ^_^

Looking good! I have to admit, I have no mental image of either character (aside from the random fact that Kyle's got a moustache, which turns me off the character big time for some reason), so cool to see your take, and liking it ^_^
