Scorch and Leff: Who are these guys? colombo.comes.to mind.

Hey fellow Malazans! scorch and Leff(Leoff) are intriguing characters for several reasons. First, they are incredibly stupid-they might have a combined IQ of 85. Second, they are grossly incompetent yet they manage to fulfill their purpose almost by accident. I cannot think of any other character that the hounds of shadow hesitates to attack. Also, Vorcan's daughter (Talia?) Is a stone.cold.killer.that could.give Laseen a run for her.money and Leoff's reply was something like-'she's a feisty little.minx, eh?' Who are these guys, really?

The best hypothesis I got from this forum is that they are Kruppe's agents and Kruppe mockra controls them with absolute precision when needed.

NB: Your post is awesome to me for so many reasons. For the love of all that is holy please keep reading Malazan.
Theorizing that one could poop within his own lifetime, Doctor Poopet led an elite group of scientists into the desert to develop a top secret project, known as QUANTUM POOP. Pressured to prove his theories or lose funding, Doctor Poopet, prematurely stepped into the Poop Accelerator and vanished. He awoke to find himself in the past, suffering from partial amnesia and facing a mirror image that was not his own. Fortunately, contact with his own bowels was made through brainwave transmissions, with Al the Poop Observer, who appeared in the form of a hologram that only Doctor Poopet could see and hear. Trapped in the past, Doctor Poopet finds himself pooping from life to life, pooping things right, that once went wrong and hoping each time, that his next poop will be the poop home.

Either two moronic incompetents whose luck keeps them alive, or two immensely skilled mercenaries who conceal their abilities behind a veneer of stupidity and clumsiness.
Or as the finale of TtH suggests, possibly somewhere in between.
- Abyss, so helpful, so very very helpful....

They honestly remind me of two Bole Brothers. Would fit in nicely with Jula, Amby, and Crump.

I think they're just a couple of goofballs.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

*Or re-read. I am sensing some sarcasm and I see that you are an elder god....you prolly read the.books, lol. I find that I experience the same books in different ways, depending on how many times I have read them, what mood I'm in, etc. That is what I was implying. That being said, I have nothing against a healthy dose of sarcasm

Heh. I just meant they're not supernatural beings. A couple of goofy humans who occasionally show surprising competence when the need arises (not unlike some Bonehunters).
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

IMO, these guys are kruppe agents, clearly unknowingly. Kruppe being the eel and possibly more when it comes to Darujhistan.

Um, I recall them scaring off a Hound of Shadow. I don't recall them ever being spooked by a mere mortal. And when.they get mad they act like Boleads.

Also, if Vorcan's daughter can't take them down, they are more than mere mundane mortals.

Why?
Laseen did nothing wrong.

I don't think they scared any Hound. The Hound was scared off by something else, and these two dorks thought it was themselves. It's like Abbott and Costello.
And as far as I recall, Taya does not appear in Toll the Hounds.
