nah man you like it, you post it :D not everyone hates it....

sadly I do, but don't let a bit of negativity put a downer on you...

Agreed, just because we're a cynical bunch is no reason not to post.

FFS look at what we said about the B&B cover.

...which also suffered for lack of a ship, i hasten to add...

Still awful cover! I for one am a fan of the new minimilist style of covers. They look good, are not silly and do not depict scenes that never happen.

I have little doubt that the scene on the cover will happen...as it did with the image pictured on the first books' cover. Because the artist likes to read the books he's depicting on the covers. Which is why the WOT: AMOL cover was an actual event that happened.

Was not criticizing this artist specifically but have you seen the cover for Orb, Scepter Throne for example? Who is the character on the cover exactly?

Nobody knows. Steve Smith either got a bum description from the publishers for the art direction or purposely forged ahead and made something generic.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

Ah, noted. Apologies.

Yes, that cover is one of the bad ones.

If they switch cover types I will be most upset, don't like mismatched sets.

Why i'm still gutted that my TPB MOI went walkies and that the Malaz books changed style after Bonehunters.
meh. Link was dead :(

I'd much prefer if this guy was not such a waste of good paper. I feel like he's almost there, almost like Eddings when I was a teenager but in reality, he's so far from that. Dumb people who think they're smart has to be my biggest pet peeve.

Seems Harsh! By far and away not my favorite author but certainly I find his work entertaining. I am very worried he will be able to pull off a ten book fantasy epic that also ties in with all his other works!

Come to think I can't right now recall a long fantasy work that I believe finished as strong as it starts

Those are the UK (Orbit?) covers. The Michael Whelan covers are from Tor.
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

In general, he dislikes or hates SF authors who outsell Erikson. That's surprisingly a quasi-good rubric to follow, but it does fall apart in some places.

He's a hipster. He wishes we weren't so mainstream as to read books that sell more than Erikson.

I think it would be cheaper to start a massive marketing campaign. I know I've seen no such thing in the US for any of Erikson's work.

It would be pretty hilarious if Mal was forced by his own principles to like all fantasy. Alas, amphibian's description is pretty far off the mark.

I really liked the first cover (the book not so much) but this one's kind of cheesy.

That would be funny - as it is, I'm forced to want to like all fantasy until I find out it's shit. Look, people, I don't give a squirt of piss how many books anybody sells. It's just not something I think about.

I really hate shit like Sanderson, Abercrombie, Daniel Abraham, etc. because it's shit, imo. These are books that could have been written 20 years ago by Eddings or some TSR hack. We should have higher standards than this now. There ought to be more writers like Erikson, Bakker, Lawrence, Mieville. You know, people who are writing for an adult audience - as in, it's not just fantasy for its own sake - like if you take the fantastical elements away, what kind of fucking story is it? And how does it compare as a story of that genre? If you're going to try to convince me that Brandon Sanderson has something interesting to say about the human condition you are going to have to try very fucking hard.

Anyway, I have a bunch more Tim Powers to read so I'm happy. Gonna try Douglas Hulick whilst lounging in the Turkish sun next month so fingers crossed - first page seemed promising.

Bolded sentence.

We?

Don't for a fraction of a second include me in a statement disparaging storytellers for the type of story they choose to tell and how by attempting to say one is "better" than the other.

Feel free to dislike the stuff on some high and mighty pedestal where upon every person you DO like spouts erudite philosophy in each sentence.

And no one is trying to convince you of anything I don't think. It sounds as if you've made up your mind...just don't include everyone else in your narrow framework.
