I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE that Sanderson wanted a return to the Classic 80's style of cover Whelan got famous for, on his Stormlight books. The art just fits.

Here is the cover (love it)

and here is a post written by Whelan discussing his process for it.

I REALLY hope that Whelan does all 10 books...considering he came out of retirement to do the 1st one, this 2nd is already a bonus tho imho.

The lighting is off in that picture. It's a mess if there's two light sources (the background whirlpool/sun and the glowing stone in front of him), as the face and the arm should look different.

Whatever floats your boat though.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

I don't really care for the cover. However, if you click on the link and scroll to the bottom of the page it shows the whole painting and it looks badass.

I don't love it as much as TWoK but it's still great. I love the epic old school fantasy style. I don't care for the minimalist trend in fantasy books now--such as with the new Malazan covers.

Agree. I like my fantasy covers to look fantastic. Not disguised like English Lit Essays.

Not a fan in the slightest.
He looks like he's trying to pass a gall stone for a start, his posture seem slightly ridiculous and his calf muscle on his right leg has been stung by a storm be and clearly swollen as a result.

I'll not even get started on the glowing dog poop he's rubbing his hands in

I never understood the love for these type of covers, I have no problem with a fantasy picture relevant to the source material, but it simply not a good picture, our own artist here throw out better stuff in the 10 minute picture thread (although they admit they take longer than 10 minutes)
reminds me too much of the cheesy crap WoT used to throw at us. Now I'm nostalgic and want to go back to the page dedicated to critiquing bad fantasy covers.
Excuse me whilst I find it and forward this awful picture to them.

I agree it works best as a whole painting (the first one was similar in that regard).

I'm leaning more towards the Macros point of view on this. Whelan gets a certain goodwill and problem overlooking that a less famous artist would.

Many people really like his stuff, so there has to be things that they are latching onto and becoming fans of, but it's not for me.

I like Gregory Manchess much more. Was just looking at his Knight and Wizard covers for Gene Wolfe and they are tremendous.

And that's fair too. As with all art, everything is not going to appeal to everyone. I appreciate that you note that some may like it while you don't, instead of summarily dismissing it as bad.

Have rep for that.

It needs a ship.

I did find Whelan's notes and drafts fascinating tho.
I also note that the position of his model represents an actual human leg position... awkward perhaps, but realistic and not much like what he ended up drawing.

...But mostly it just needs a ship.

nah man you like it, you post it :D not everyone hates it....

sadly I do, but don't let a bit of negativity put a downer on you, I wish I loved fantasy book covers, but I find I don't own many due to not giving them the time of day due to... well covers I find repulsive :D

I wouldn't have read malazan if GOTM had it's old cover (yuck, snort, hiss, spit, poo)

:D the first WOK cover was ok I just, don't like that interpretation of... whatshisnamewhoi'veforgottenrightnow :D
