I only expected him to be more charming, maybe smile more often. I also pictured him with slightly longer, graying hair. I have no idea if that's because he was described that way in the books or not. It's been a while since I read them.

That's a no brainer as the first ep pulled down a record-busting 6.6 Million viewers...which is like...insane!

I would like to point out that "A man's got to have a code" is a cross-HBO reference to Omar Little, and it was spectacular. Also, slamming a head into a knife is way cooler than slamming a knife into a head.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

SO gf fell asleep 2/3 through the pilot of GoT. Well, I guess I do call her "sleepyhead" for a reason, but it's still a bit gutting!

Also when the Hound uses the C-word to describe Polliver's mouth, that might be a Deadwood reference (Wild Bill in season 1).

My non-book-reading Aunt just emailed me to say she's making popcorn and waiting with anticipation. I told her tonight should be pretty cathartic. I'm on the road, but I made sure my hotel has HBO.

Oberyn was fantastic all around. He is going to rock this season and make show-people love him very quickly, I think; his death should be very impactful.
Did Tyrion do the whole "I don't love you because you're a whore" thing in the books? I don't recall it. By the way, I hate the whole "save the girl who is too stubborn to escape from danger by telling her you don't love her" trope, and I was surprised they used it. It wasn't until later that I remembered that GRRM wrote that episode, and then I wasn't as surprised. He may enjoy a bit of trope-busting, but he is still fairly old-school. I just don't remember it being in the books.
They dropped a ton of clues about Sansa's necklace, but it still probably wasn't clear to the non-bookreaders what happened there at all. I hope they make it more clear later; the scenes from the next episode would seem to point in that direction.
I also liked that they worked in Melisandre since it was her leech-magic at play here. The Bolton-and-bastard scene was nice; we didn't get much from them in the books did we? I don't remember anything at all about their reunion in the books, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything. Bran with the tree is early. Didn't realize Dany was missing until scenes-from-next. Cersei and Brienne, Jamie and Loras, both good scenes. I am guessing Brienne will split next week by the end of the episode, looking for the girl of...seven-and-ten? Loras will be off to take Dragonstone soon.

Bran with the tree needs to be early on the show. He's aging by the year, the actor is already 15 and will be 17-18 by the time the last season rolls around....speeding up his plotlines keeps his thread on an even keel, and will fit with ditching a lot of the superfluous wandering chaff from AFFC and ADWD...I think the show is going to play leaner all around for the next two seasons...most of all because Arya, Bran, ect will all age in real time too fast for them to bother with waiting.
