Look it up in a dictionary or a science book - a thumb is considered a finger just like all the rest (though, yes, it is a different, 'specialised' form of finger). Think of new mothers delighting in the fact that their newborn has "ten fingers and ten toes". No one ever says, "eight fingers and two thumbs."
