We're up to CF now? I'm fairly certain that my next turn will be "Explore NW from Canopus sector. Probably with an Influence and Colonize if the suitable hex is drawn."

But I reserve the right to change that if Khell surprises me or the hex isn't suitable.

The Terran Union agrees. Although we acknowledge that all beings should be judged on their sentience, not their chemistry, we do think that intelligent stoves should know their place.

@CF. Unless has the scratch for Illustrator, Inkscape is pretty much the only vector option anymore isn't it? I've got an old g5 MacPro somewhere with Panther I believe. And a copy of CorelDraw 10 somewhere. Tempted to rewind 10 years and try that. Typing to use the libroffice draw just as a proof of concept thing, but it is quite awkward and unintuitive.

Meh. Looks like it's inkscape by default. I hate Adobe and they swallowed Macromedia. Back when I was doing some of this prepress graphics I used CorelDraw. But they dropped Mac support a decade ago.

Has anyone noticed that the planets are not the same size? So much for making a "planet" object and duplicating it to my heart's content.

So what if the planets aren't the same size if you are recreating it from scratch. Just make them the same size for ease. As long as all the important pieces are included in your drawing make it as easy on yourself as you can. I played around a bit in excel with some of the graphic options and gave it up as too time consuming. Plus I couldn't even get the simple graphic items to come out the way I wanted them let alone even attempt to play around with "drawing" a ship.
I don't know what I'm doing but it sounds good.

Some of this has already been done. Such as the ships. Influence discs, cubes, etc. CF and D'rek already have those "pieces". I'm making new tiles for them to drop the pieces onto. The idea is to have a board with a white background and simple colored planets. Once I've got a "science planet" I can duplicate it and drop it into a hex, rotate it to match the hex number. Drop the correct square(s). Add the number and text in black. Once I've got the shapes right, making the distinct hexes shouldn't take long. And I only have to make each hex once. We can re-use them endlessly.

The finished file size should be under 5mb (I hope) for an entire game board. It's turning out to be more work than I thought it would be but much less than I was afraid it would be. Mostly because I'm rusty as fuck; it's been over a decade since I've made anything with a graphics program. For example, I just spent almost 2 hours making half warp portals. Locked the layer. Deleted the jpg to see the finished product. No warp portals. I'd made them white, not black. :p

As for the planet size, I do think that's important for look and feel. Money planets are slightly bigger than materials and science. If I make them all the same size your eyes will notice the difference and it just won't "feel right". You probably wouldn't know why it didn't feel right. But that feeling is why graphics artists can make good money. :p

For example, look at the black and white local business ads in a newspaper. It's easy to pick out the ones that were made by the clients from the ones made by the newspaper's staff.

Besides, I'm bored.

Hi all, I am processing updates from SS onward now.

I was turned off this weekend as parenting more or less absorbed my life. Mme. CF had engagements both friday evening and saturday afternoon / evening so I was left guarding the sprout.

It made for a fun time though. Usually I'm at work all day and only get to hang out with the babe for a couple hours before beddy-bye.

Should have the board update complete within 10 minutes.

@Twelve,

Muahaha =/= bad times for you. Don't worry. I'm just saying it cause I thought of a plan.

And I thought about saving my science, but plasma missiles aren't that amazing of a weapon (as I experienced last game) and odds for beating double ancients with only basic upgrades are actually pretty decent.

@All

how is the pace for this game? I'm doing the best I can to keep up but weekends are unplugged for me the the sprout guarding and all.

I'm happy to turn things over if somebody else is interested and thinks they can do better - and I don't mean that in a challenging way...if you really want to mod then I'm happy not to. I just did it cause nobody else seemed like they want to.

@Gnaw

I'm interested in your "simple board" approach. What do you need from me to make it happen?

RE drawing programs: Yes, inkscape is all vector, but my source images are raster, so when you scale them up resolution is lost. All of my source images either came from d'rek (for expansion pieces) or from....um.....can't remember whre now, but Morgoth linked to it in the Pre-game thread I think.

Would it help for you to have a pre-game setup board? I saved the file and put it aside just before I started setting up the game for round 1. I've added in a few things since, but essentially everything is in that file. Maybe we could use "yousendit" or dropbox to get you the big file? It's about 250mB

Provisional:
Research Advanced Robotics.
If both Adv Rob's that are on the board are gone, move 2 fighters from Home Planet to Sector 320 (ancient occupied system).

@CF - the pace feels a little slow, but I think a big part of that is that it is still early and that we have 9 players. When there are less explores happening so people don't need to wait for updates between actions, it'll pick up.

Looks like Gnaw, GP and Morgoth all have provisionals in, and I don't care what Khell does, so:

provisional: BUIld Dreadnaught in Mu Herculis

Yup, just waiting on khell,

Unless he's put in a provisional without updating page 1. I didn't see anything though.

EDIT - @d'rek

That's what I was thinking. That and round 1 was very tough for me to keep ahead of....with explore orders being issued and then trying to remember who wanted which orientation.

I predict with reduced explores as the game progresses (there are 10 tier 3 explores left I think, unless the homeworlds count as part of the total tier 3 count), player actions will be much easier to process.
