As much as I'm looking forward to this, I hope Jim Butcher cuts back on the "action sequence begins, then Harry spends a page or two explaining the nature of ______, then action sequence resumes." Did anyone notice more of that in Cold Days, or was that just me?

I just opened up Cold Days and looked for the first example I could find. Chapter 11 ends with a bomb going off, then at the beginning of chapter 12, Harry spends a few paragraphs explaining what it's like to be near an explosion.

Butcher probably always did this, but I just started to notice a lot of it in Cold Days.

Nah, it's not that ba- *chapter 37 ends with explosion and half a building falling into lake, next chapter leads with description of why that might be shocking* hmmmm
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

I'm not sure which bit i loved more.. the byplay between Harry and that other person, the appearance of that other other person, or what happened just before the hook for the next chapter.

Seriously people, go read this, it was a pure Dresdencrack fix. The shakes have gone down, the visual distortions are almost gone, even the constipation is better... plus the whole no longer bleeding from the ears and toes thing...

Honestly, I think it's actually a pretty slow start compared to a lot of other Dresden books.

I kinda love it when D'rek unleashes her nerd wrath, as I knew she would here. Sorry innocent bystanders, but someone's gotta be the kindling.

Honestly, I just wanted to be the third person to say "honestly"

Slow, i concur, but not boring.
More in the way off set up for later payoff. Not every book can open with Dresden carrying a box of puppies in mad escape from flaming-poo throwing flying monkey demons.

I think that's still my favourite Dresden opening to this day. It was just so ridiculous-seeming and yet so epic.

I have this vague recollection that back when i was originally considering the series, i read a review that mentioned that scene and it pretty much closed the deal for me.

My favorite opening was Changes. No crazy action or anything, but you really get the feeling that this isn't going to be your everyday Dresden Files book--complete with Mac talking in full sentences.

Reading through the thread I see that already back 2009 I was actively avoiding spoilers in the Dresden pre-release hype train.

Well, at least we are all consistent. I think very few people have given in (well, admitted to giving in anyway) to the spoilery goodness over the years of trying to convince them.

Anyway, slightly off topic but I saw Felix Castor mentioned in that linked thread- what's the verdict on that series as urban fantasy? Is it a good choice to read while waiting for the end of the month?

It's the "admitted to" part that pains me. I know, i KNOW, that at least two people are reading the preview chapters and denying it for forms' sake. Why? Why all the self hate? Can't we all just read and spoil and get along?

I think so. It's radically slower in pace than Dresden and the magic generally far more understated, but very nicely written and well thought out, and while the first three books go from ok/good to very good, 4 and 5 are flat out amazing.
Among other things, Carey wrote LUCIFER for DC for years and is compared well with Gaiman's SANDMAN, for what that's worth.
