My daughter has had her Rey costume on all day now. Ok it's the first SW she's seen at the cinema, but she says it was the best one of the new trilogy. Take that how you will!

Wedge, Luke, Lando, Leia, Han, and all the voices at the end, I definitely heard Anakin in there. That was a ice nod to Rebels, I thought - as close to the world within worlds we'll get in a movie I guess.

Details that I noticed that can only be described as myth busters -

Vader's helmet being dumped unceremoniously in town (Momin theory out)

Both Finn and Poe getting hinted love interests, so no bromance there.

Rose getting a pat on the shoulder and getting left behind - not so subtle.

The group all staying together, with an emphasis on not being split up on different missions. This worked really well imo.

Snoke being disregarded as basically irrelevant.

Luke catching his saber, telling Rey to take care of it. Also none too subtle but again, I liked it.

Luke training Leia post-jedi. Also showing Rey training with Leia. Just to, you know, shut people the hell up.

Chewies near death experience - nod to EU but with a better result. I thought it worked well too, good impact but carefully saved.

Rey clone. It would have actually worked better to have her as a Palps clone; the mirror scene in tLJ, taking Skywalker name would all work with it, with no questions regarding Palps having some unknown family. But hey.

Chewie got his medal! Not subtle but I still liked it.

Stuff I really liked - Leia all the way through. Great ending, well handled imo of course.

The Rey/Kylo fights in two places at once. Culminating in that moment with the saber pass at the end.. loved it.

Han! That scene.. mirroring their previous one, as it's his memory, but with his eventual change.

Ben's smile. He smiled, and cheesy or not I thought that was a good way for him to go.

Luke and Leia as Reys 'parents'. Both sabers buried together. BB8 and the twin suns next to each other!

Noticable eye rolling moment - Luke's X-Wing! Nuff said, it happened, it was pretty amusing really, and it meant Rey got to leave later in Red 5. So I dont care that it would have been a rust bucket full of fish.

is Rey a biological decendent of Palpatine, then they did hint very heavily that Palpatine had a son, who was Rey's father. Reys parents left her to grow up anonymously as they knew her heritage and danger she was in because of it.

It's equally possible though that the man who is Rey's father is referred to as his 'son' in the same way that Palps saw Anakin as his son. Just as he MAY have manipulated cells/midichlorians to create Anakin (NOT definite, as there's literally one panel in a comic where Vader has a vision - it's only Vaders suspicion that Palpatine did this, not fact) he may also have been experimenting with cloning himself; and the result, close or not, he would probably refer to as his son, and then Rey as his granddaughter.

None of this has been looked at in anything other than the movie so far, but I think it's more likely from what we saw of the snoke experiments that the cloning route is how he got descendants, not though a biological family. Palpatine didnt have any love, any connection to anybody enough to have a family like that, hidden or not. He also didn't find the power that was able to heal or return life that Anakin wanted so badly because that requires self sacrifice - impossible for a Sith, but something Ben finally realised right at the end.

Well, its kind of hinted at but not proved to be true. Like what he says at the opera in RotS. That's a pretty big nod in that direction. Some people have interpreted the Vader vision in the comic as confirmation but it's only a suspicion.

I liked it. I liked parts of it A LOT, and other parts not so much. I didn’t outright HATE anything though, so that’s good.

I should start out by saying that knowing the plot leaks a month ago and hearing about what changed over time...and what was removed left a lot of dangling plot threads that sew up at the end sort of, but because the rest of those plot lines and scenes were dropped, they come out of nowhere.

Firstly. Jannah is Lando’s daughter. If this wasn’t at least somewhat obvious during that scene where he asks her where she’s from...but they dropped every earlier scene that eludes to this. But yeah, taken as a child and made into a FO stormtrooper. So if that “where are you from....let’s find out” scene seemed to stand out because it came out of nowhere...that’s why. They had planned to be less than subtle about it originally.

Secondly, the whole Force Dyad thing was originally a much more in depth exploration and really hammered home the things Rey and Ben can do and why. But it was deemed too convoluted and mystical to include, so it’s almost entirely dropped except where Palps mentions it.

The Luke and Leia training scene was originally MUCH longer, but it was cut for pacing. Would love to see the longer cut.

As explained earlier, the voices of the past scene was SUPPOSED to be all of the, physically as Force ghosts...but cut to voices to appease China. Blecch.

Anyways, onto specifics.

I’ll start with what I didn’t like.

I’m not a fan of the fact that essentially, because Ben dies and Rey lives that the Skywalker line ends and the Palpatine one is the one that goes on...like that KIND of feels like Palps won...after all that...he won in a way. I get that she takes the SKYWALKER name, so not really...but it still rankles a bit.

I really didn’t like some of the hokey telegraphed lines. Like did Hux REALLY need to say “I’m the spy!”....like people legit laughed at that in our theatre...and while I don’t mind him as the turncoat (Khallus did it WAAAYYYYYYY better on REBELS), he dies so quickly after that it felt like JJ was tying up a loose end he had no purpose for. Which I suppose he didn’t.

Knowing about the two fakeout deaths (Chewie, Threepio memory wipe...restored by R2) ahead of time made me find them a bit hokey...but not overly so.

I really could have done without the kiss. Like 1000% could have done without it. The scene does not need it.

Now, Things I like or loved.

The whole opening Resistance stuff was some nice banter, nice flying, and just generally fun Star Wars stuff.

The fight on the Death Star II wreckage was great, and the mirrored Han “memory” scene with Ben....I wept. Like I was sobbing. And when he threw the lightsaber into the sea I wanted to pump my fist.

The Rey and Kylo chats were handled better here than in TLJ I felt.

I LOVED the ach-to Rey and Luke scene. It may not have corrected his portrayal in the previous film, but it was a SOLID course correction and I enjoyed it.

The jedi voices of the past scene was fantastic...picking out all the different ones was fun...they are listed in the credits FYI: Anakin, Obi-Wan (Ewan), Obi-Wan (Guinness), Adi Gallia, Ayala Secura, Luminara Undulii, Yoda, Ahsoka, Luke, Leia, Mace Windu, Qui-Gon (twice!), and Kanan Jarrus.

When Kanan’s voice dropped (Freddie Prinze!!!!!) “In the heart of a JEDI lies her strength”...I literally whisper shouted “Kanan!” at my wife. Lol. I MIGHT be a Kanan fanboy.

Love Rey’s yellow saber...looked to be built from her staff...could not tell if it was single or double though...

Now...my favourite scene in the movie...and quite frankly this is my fave scene in the entire sequel trilogy...

The saber handoff. That whole sequence of Ben trying to get to Rey, running into the KoR and fighting them by hand...only to force connect with Rey...she nods, he nods...she puts the saber behind her back as if to strike the Emperor as he wants...disappears...and Ben has it, spins and takes all the KoR out....fuck. Me. That. Was. Incredible. I got goosebumps. I could watch that scene over and over and over...and I probably will.

If I had a wish...it would be that Ben could have survived. He’s EASILY the best character this trilogy produce, so to see him redeemed to the light,..but die...bugs me because I’d love to see like a show or a movie of him running penance for his former evil

And I KIND of wish some of those sith Accolytes had swarmed Rey and Ben so they could team up fight again...but I get why that didn’t happen.

It does kind of feel like this movie is a trilogy all on its own...there is a lot stuffed in there.

But yeah, I liked it and it contains the best scene in any of the three sequel trilogy movies...so for that, I give it fairly high marks. It ain’t perfect, but it’s a damned fun flick that tries its very best.

So earlier in the script stages, the emperor used Rey and Ben’s “dyad” to force syphon their life forces enough to rejuvenate himself into a 25 yEar old Verizon of himself...Matt Smith would have played that. At some point JJ decided it was fine just using McDiarmid for the whole shebang, so Smith was cut.

I’m really quite upset that we got to see redeemed Ben Solo for such a short time. In fact, if you watch the saber pass, and fight...he is SOOOOOOOO much what Han would have looked like/acted like as a JEDI...even his fighting style changes. He goes from the big cumbersome sweeps VADER style....to quick, fast spins and focus...Anakin style. Like he legit FELT like a different person to Kylo Ren. As far as I’m concerned...Driver is the mvp of this trilogy. He utterly acted his ass off. And in this film he sold me that he was two totally separate people...and as Ben Solo he doesn’t even utter a word....it’s ALL done in movements, and facial expressions...that shrug he gives the KoR after he gets the saber is ALL Han Solo.

Fuck me. Kylo Ren was cool....but Ben Solo is the jam sauce.
