I've been to split, I went in April which is just before the main season starts, September would be towards the end. There is definitely lots to do beach, history, culture wise etc near by. The bar scene wasn't very prominent whilst I was there, lots of nice places to sit outside but mostly shut by midnight. Hvar off the coast is a big nightlife spot, but on the expensive side.

Sorry, late to the party, as usual... But maybe I can still throw in my two cents on Croatian coast:

Since Split is out of question, have you considered Dubrovnik? There are direct flights to Dubrovnik Airport with Aer Lingus and Jet2.com from Dublin and Belfast:
http://www.airport-d...etenja_2014.pdf

Dubrovnik is well worth seeing; the old city is beautiful and the beaches are awesome, there’s plenty of culture and history to feed your eyes and brains and delicious food to fill your bellies. Also, September is a good time to visit; it's still within the season and very warm, and now that they're shooting the Game of Thrones there every September/October, it’s even more crowded during that period than it used to be in the past.

Now, before someone accuses me of working for the Croatian Ministry of Tourism (which I don’t :p ), there are also some less positive issues to consider.

Dubrovnik is by no means a cheap destination (although I guess that always depends on how deep your pockets are and how much you’re willing to splash on your vacation). So if you decide to go there, don’t even look at the hotels – go for the private accommodation on the city fringes. The more of you there are in the group, the cheaper it gets (an apartment costs the same if there’s just two of you or six of you in it).

Also, Dubrovnik is tiny. So regarding nightlife… hmmm… yeah, there’s plenty of touristy bars and night clubs, but iirc the best party locations, where the locals used to drag me to, are on the outskirts of the city or in the nearby villages, so without a car you’d be left with a very narrow choice of venues within the city itself (most of which close earlier and/or are stupidly expensive). So rent-a-car might be a good idea for a Dubrovnik vacation, and would at the same time enable you to see Split and other coastal towns as well.

So dunno… I would definitely encourage anyone to visit Dubrovnik before they die, but I haven’t been there myself in the last couple of years, so maybe someone else could give you a better advice. Chill, who used to be quite active on the forums for a while, is from Dubrovnik and if he still checks his PMs he might be a much better source of info.

The problem with people who have no vices is that generally you can be pretty sure they're going to have some pretty annoying virtues.

We've added the dalmatian coast to the list of train journeys to do. But thanks for the input on that front, I've always wanted to go to dubrovnik, it just looks fantastic. Money, well I'll likely throw money around me like a sailor in port wherever I go so.. Yeah not the highest on my list :p

We're likely doing something awful and tacky like Marbella because its simple and I know come September I'll be itching to see some proper history as well as get blitzed and burnt (was nearly booking Rhodes there, but the 18-30 run about on the island too, so want to visit it out of season) but I don't really have the time to put together the kind of holiday I really want at the minute, and booking early = cheap (bar last minute.com obviously)

I went to Dubrovnik back before Yugoslavia broke up. It was a shinning jewel then. Just fantastic. That is still a memory that I treasure. I was ten and there was a nudist colony off the shore that the boat drove by. The city was really nice too. :)

I was there for a long weekend last year. Memories are a bit vague but there's a really, really nice winehouse in an old watertower. The wine cellar is in the actual aquaduct.
Perfect service, good tapas and quite cool in summer, I imagine.

Also, eat fish. And visit the Port (as in fortified wine) Authority, which for some odd reason is in Lisbon.

Thread necro.

I was hungover and bored yesterday.

So I booked myself flights to China, and back again obviously.

Going to be there at the end of April/start of may for 16 days. Basic outline (yes have applied for visa, calm down). A week in Beijing and a week in Shanghai.
When in Beijing the accommodation I'm at organises tours to the great wall, the square, imperial city or whatever islts called, basically the big big touristy items. Haven't looked into Shanghai at all yet.

Anyone been, any recos?

Depends... how interested are you in black market cybernetic panda fights, demonic summoning rituals, and/or eating live crustaceans?

Shanghai doesn't really have much unique to offer from the tourist perspective, fireworks on the waterfront are every night I think and were decent, and there are quite a lot of cool buildings but nothing that really stands out from the tourist perspective. If you've been to other major asian metropolises you'll know what to expect, though the nightlife is decent.

Beijing, the big ticket items are all good, I'd avoid the zoo, doesn't have the same standards of animal care we generally have in the west (or it didn't).

I'd consider instead of Shanghai making the trip to X'ian, the terracotta army is worth the trip alone, but there are a number of other interesting places nearby, and the walls of X'ian are pretty impressive in themselves.

Hmm, interesting. I haven't really finalised anything internal travel wise yet, so can I easily change my plans around, terracotta army always fascinated me. I'm more excited to see old shit than new shit, I can see sky scrapers and nightclubs in any city in the world

Stick to Japanese whiskey then. As much as you are legally allowed to bring back with you.
