Do not underestimate the entertainment inherent in the mid-day low stakes Blackjack free drinks crowd. Get a good table and you have hours of entertainment.

Falling back to this now

Going to go to one of the islands for a week this summer.

Based on flight options we are down to:

These are the two that I can comment on.

Santorini is the super touristy one, the one you see in all the photos of the blue roofs on white stone clutching to the side of the incline, with switchback trails and donkeys and tonnes of little shops ect. It's nice, but you're probably better off not staying right in the main town area (Oia? I think it's called?). Outside of town on the other side if the island is dune buggy-ing which can be fun.

Mykonos is much quieter, rich people yachts berthed in the harbors, sleepy little bistros for food and drink...but is mainly not as touristy...but then the trade off is there is less to do that is immediately visible...there is stuff to do, but you will need to plan it, whereas on Santorini everything is in your face to decide what to do.

I find a great thing to do in advance is email the tourism board for both islands and they will happily send you a list of things you can do in each place.

I preferred Mykonos as I loved the quiet of it, but we were only there for about 5 hours so YMMV if you're staying longer and seeking stuff to do.

My partner told me that July and August in Central Mykonos can be very rich bro-y and women who want to land a rich bro. She stayed outside the main city, which made for a much quieter time during mid September.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

100%. It's very much the greek island that the rich and super rich go to...so bear that in mind though.

There's a long stone quay you can walk along where all those super yachts are parked and when we walked along it I got the eyeball from a few rich assholes on their floating homes...it was amusing.

There it is:

I will say that I didn't run into any of them when we were in the little bistro we hung out in.

But yeah, you're probably better off in Santorini, tourists and all if you wish to avoid the rich island. But it's very possible to be in quieter places on Santorini, just with some planning.

...Santorini

Beautiful. Can be touristy, but the beaches are great and the black/red/white sand thing is real. It's not hard to move off the touristy areas and find places the locals go, but it's not a huge island and at max season, july august, just accept there will be crowds.

Corfu

I adore Corfu for a few reasons and not all of them are those Caligula-esque days at the Pink Palace as a backpacker the first time I went there. The main town is fairly big, has a tonne of glorious restaurants, and lots to see and stroll. The island itself is a nice size to explore, worthwhile renting a (small) car for that purpose. Beaches are nice, not as nice as Santorini tho if you hunt a bit there are some lovely ones.

We went to Rhodes before kids and weren't that blown away by it to be honest. The biggest plus was seeing where the collusus isn't...
