Okay, I didn't have oodles of time to play with last night, but I stopped at the bookstore and read about a page of the sample...

....it was VERY GOOD...and follows directly on the heels of the cliffhanger from GHOST STORY.

Interesting. All of the other gaps between books are a month to year. I guess the timeline was funky from Changes to Ghost Story but it still ended up being most of a year IIRC.

I'm not sure that's necessarily true. There could be some goings-ons in-between the end of GS and that excerpt of CD, such as

or even just vague blurriness of poor recollection

I didn't see anything saying this excerpt was the first chapter of CD, was there? If not, I could see this being chapter 2 and chapter 1 giving something of an introduction. Otherwise, if this excerpt is the very start, Butcher is tossing the whole "every book can be read as a standalone" thing and not re-introducing every major character and concept like he usually would (which is fine by me, it's book 14 of the series!)

Harry enters a sewer pipe and is thrust into an alternate universe where he befriends a princess, who is then kidnapped by turtle monsters. It's up to Harry -- and his hungry (non-fossilized) dinosaur pal -- to rescue the princess and restore her rightful place in charge of anthropomorphic fungal creatures.

Harry wakes up in a really comfy bed. The air is just about cold enough for him to see his breath. He's totally naked underneath. A servant girl comes in and asks him if he knows his and her name. He has trouble remembering, but gets it right quickly enough. She slaps him for being such an ass after their one-night stand. She is surprised and summons Mab to tell her that he has recovered his memory. As Mab enters, some bass-heavy funk music begins playing. Mab tries to kill Harry by suffocating him with a pillow. Harry complains that humans do foreplay a little bit differently. Harry is very weak and barely manages to get out from under it and draw breath. Mab tells him that now that he's regained his memory/senses, his re-training to get back into physical shape will begin.

Sexy Montage music begins. Every day Mab tries to seduce murder Harry in new and creative ways. As Harry gets healthier the methods get crazier, eventually peaking with her attacking him with both a Malk and a shotgun, which he solves by stealing the shotgun and shooting the Malk with it. Getting attacked with a Malk and shogun is super sexy in the Winter Court

Mab is pleased and tells him he'll be attending a fancy social event in her pants. He gets a tux and meets the primordial Malk (like the Scarecrow in Proven Guilty was a primordial Phobophage). The primordial Malk will be his guide, telling Harry what the hell everything at the party is, and what the proper method of seducing it is stuff.

that's it's awesome and funny as fuck. There are also some interesting hints about the nurse-fae having a connection to the former Winter Knight, Mab appears to be able to harm Harry directly now that he's 'hers', and talk to Harry now without a Malk filter, and the primordial Malk has an absolutely perfect name which i won't spoil and looks like it's going to be an excellent sidekick to Harry for the book. Did I mention that Butcher manages to pack more awesome, plot and character into that one short chapter than some authors manage in an entire book? Also, awesome.

I don't think we'll see anyone from Chicago in at least the first half of the book.

A major emotional issue will, I'm sure, be that all of Harry's friends still think he is dead, and that now even his ghost has moved on to the afterlife so he really can't come back. Harry probably wants to tell someone this, so they can pass along word to the others, but I think Mab will be trying to keep him leashed by not letting him have contact with his friends. Thus, no Murphy, no Molly, no Butters, no Toot-toot, no Mac, no Thomas, no Mister, etc for at least the first half. Maybe Lea will try to get a big favour out of him in exchange for her telling them. Marcone is also possible, I guess, since he wouldn't necessarily want to do Dresden any favours by passing the word along to Murph and co.

Whether we see any of them later in the book will depend, I think, on whether Harry can get "back to business" in Chicago by the end of CD or not.

I suspect the book will be Fae-centric, but that doesn't eliminate the entire cast. I fully expect to see Lea and Toot at a minimum, plus the Summer Fae kids who have been around since bk 4. Marcone is possible but unlikely. Lea's connection to Molly opens that altho i doubt it. Certain members of the White Council and the White Court have had dealings with the Winter Fae. Thomas ran with the Wylde Hunt once so there's a fae angle there.

Butcher tends to alternate supporting cast, so after the 1-2 punch of the Chicago cast in CHANGES and then GS i expect no Murphy, Micheal & fam, JLC & wolves, etc, but theres still a good bunch available.

That being said i wouldn't mind Butcher developing a new supporting cast at all. Just
