Hmm, I'll probably wait until the mmpb to read it, then (which I guess I did for Ghost Story without even realizing it). A hardcover would just look too weird next to the current row of matched mmpbs.

I just check 'em out from the library and then buy them cheap at Half Price Books a couple years later.
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

I was gonna do the same. Just wait till GS came out in pb...then I got to the end of Changes and knew I was going to cave. I went to Walmart and got the HC GS.
Proven Guilty got me. Actually it was Dead Beat... I had just finished an extended first read binge culminating in DB... and PG had just been released in hc... i think i lasted about as long as it too for me to get to the enarest book store the next day. It's been all pre-order hc's ever since, incl Cold Days. And the first chapter is right here http://www.jim-butch.../cold-days-ch-1

As of tonight, there is less than zero chance of me giving in -- as the latest Vorkosigan novel has been released! If Dresden is crack, then Vorkosigan is crystal meth!
It is perfectly monstrous the way people go about nowadays saying things against one, behind one's back, that are absolutely and entirely true.

Tell me about it, I bought the arc from baen a few months ago (which by the way is a brilliant initiative, ebook copy 3 months before release, yes please) and I ended up staying up until 3am to finish it!
Chapter 2 goes up soon right?

Chapter 2 goes up tomorrow. It will have to compete with Halo and the election, but I will find time.

Rejoice, friends, chapter 2 is upon us... http://www.jim-butch...-days-chapter-2
@QT - Start with Cordelia's Honor, an omnibus. It's the proper start to the story and where the author recommends starting. She has this whole internal order that doesn't work with the published orders of the books. Read the note on the amazon page. Conceivably you could also start with the Young Miles collection, if that was more your fancy. Now back on topic.

Chapter 2 was great fun... but now I've got to wait a whole week to find out
Re: Vorkosigan, I started with the young miles duology, which I highly enjoyed. The cordelia's honour duology is good, but doesn't quite reach the levels that the miles books do, I read that duology after all the others and enjoyed them, but I could see myself not being particularly intrested in continuing the series if I started with them. Oh and civil campaign by bujold is possibly my favourite book ever, edging out even dead beat and memories of ice, it's just such a perfectly plotted and written book.
Spoiler

And lo, I was nearly tricked by my own brain by reading the username of a demon impersonating Imperial Historian and nearly clicking on the spoiler tag because the Imperial Historian I know would never try to tempt me with spoilers.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

I know. It's these poor deluded souls who apparently believe in no snacking before dinner, no cocktails before wine, and probably no sex before marriage, whom i'm trying to help.

He's doing it for your own good.

I'm a firm believer in one of those things, I hate alcohol anyway, and also I haven't cracked yet, either.

I'm just going to point out that if you don't read the promo chapters, the terrorists win.
Do with that as you will. Just saying is all. No pressure.

I love and support all those things dearly.
I also believe in the awesomeness of opening Cold Days for the first time and having no idea what i'm getting ready to start and being blown away by it.
Plus, i watched Vanilla Sky for the umpteenth time recently, so i'm really into "pleasure delaying".

I've always been crazy but its kept me from going insane.
