Enjoyed Magician (and felt guilty about it), liked the next two progressively less, found book 1 of the Empire series interesting, thought book 2 was a strong contender for the worst book I've read, and haven't gone on. But, that's just me

Why not? It's quite possible to enjoy the Maccy's list above and it's OK to not want to go any further, as that's pretty much the best.
But I do suggest you give that list a try. I'll admit it's quite simplistic after Erikson ... but then again, what isn't?

I've only got 3 credits and I was after some Janny Wurts haha my only query about Feist was that it seems the trilogy is part of a bigger series which I haven't read. Just wondered if I needed to have read all the other stuff.

No, in theory.

But there's a lot of stuff that will zip over your head without reading Magician at least.
And my favourite Feist individual work Honoured Enemy requires both. And Silverthorn at least benefits the book as well.

I did enjoy Magician but, around that time, happened to read some articles about how Feist had lifted large chunks, particularly those pertaining to Tsurani culture and their presence on Midkemia, from an obscure game. Don't know how much truth, if any, there were in those claims but they made me more than a bit uneasy.

Fairly sure most of world building came from his DnD group, which he acknowledges and thanks in mostbooks.

Tsurani culture and world building was based heavily on Korea, in fact afaik he and Janny wurts spent some time there researching for the Empire trilogy

Hmm, a bit of research says Kelewan (the original idea of it pre empire trilo) was based on Tekumel from empire of the Petal throne, this was when Midkemia was their DnD setting and it was invaded by Tekumel, so yes in theory the external enemy was an import from another IP, but the subsequent development of Kelewan puts that into background noise.
And Feist has stated before openly that the DnD game was their world being invaded by Tekumel, so his influences and sources were not nefariously stolen imo

I read all the TekWar books in high school, middle school? whenever it was, as they came out. They were fine at the time.
