The first trilogy was ya, but not excessively so, I dunno about the second series,

Has anyone read "Whispers of War" by Sean Rodden? This recommendation showed up on my FB feed yesterday night and it has very goods rating on Amazon and Goodreads...my TRP pile is quite vast atm (both ebooks and paper) but if it's that good, maybe I'll add it to the list?

(Sorry if this was asked before, I didn't go back and check every post).

I very dimly remember hating it, but if you like lots of vampire sex and unhealthy relationships, it's the series for you. It was quite decently written and easy to follow, iirc.

I also recommend Rodden's Whispers of War too, although I'll admit I've had a beer with the bloke - but that was after I really enjoyed his read. It's got a great opening chapter, and is for Tolkien fans - and I say this FOR REAL - not the way mass media claims every fantasy is Tolkien. His prose is very poetic and beautiful, and the sequel is coming out in September (and promises to be an all out bloodbath of amazing to boot). It's just gonna build hype the longer it exists.

It's been recommended to me on the basis of references to this book's examination of dimensions (not the social satire) in some other (YA) book. Also anyone know any other interesting books dealing with this subject?

If you like the sound of 'Asian stuff'-type fantasy then I recommend instead, if you haven't already, Daniel Abraham's Long Price Quartet or Elizabeth Bear's Eternal Sky trilogy. Or GGK's 'Under Heaven'. All three of those are superb (the follow up to Under Heaven, River of Stars, less so, but it's not like a direct sequel or anything).

There are those who like GoK a lot, but the prose puts a lot of people off.

There was also some who didn't like that it apparently tracks real Chinese history very closely, so that if you figure out who is based on who it's predictable, but then, the same is fairly true of Under Heaven. And I know little of Chinese history so that would have been of no issue to me.

This is a wise choice, I made it through all of it and it is certainly one of the worst books I've finished in recent years.

It's all right. Its prose is definitely divisive- at points it reads almost like a history textbook with little character-focus, and being all about the history of this made-up place with God's meddling through human agents, and airships, kite assassins, etc.

Not the best book I've read, but I'm eagerly waiting for the mmpb of the sequel, because I want to see where it goes.

Well now I need to give it a go to see if it gets the QT/PG Double Stamp of Disapproval or not.

EDIT: I had a quick read of the sample on amazon...eh...that prose would take some SERIOUS getting used to for sure.

There are a few bad reviews, including this incredibly negative detailed breakdown on Goodreads that have put me off The Tiger's Daughter.

I'd heard a few things glowing and a few things not so glowing. That's a solid breakdown though so perhaps I'll steer clear. Especially as someone with Japanese heritage...it's pretty bad.
