I like Stackpole. He did great work in Star Wars EU :rtfm: Hickman is co writer of Dragonlance which is fun. Doing a re read of that now and I was always curious of their Deathgate 7 bk series..

Ahhh, DEATHGATE.... I have read that series twice and enjoyed it both times, albeit a chunk of years ago. I think it's worth a try. You'll know pretty quickly whether you want to keep going. Hickman and Weis do some really fun world building there and the overall story is pretty neat fantasy lit. If I had a complaint t would be their tendency towards slow character heavy build to one big finish for each book. Not a flaw so much as a repetitious pattern I dislike as predictable.

I read the first book of Deathgate this year and I really loved it.

Not sure what you mean by Old School. It's a good series, interesting characters and world(s), many creative ideas and much variation of atmosphere and stuff that happens. I really liked it, read it twice.

Not sure what you mean BK, but there are Elves, Dwarves and Dragons. And its a very entertaining read with a quite innovative world, some solid history and memorable characters.

Old school equals generic fantasy. Elves, dwarves, magic, a group on quest etc.

Not our modern stuff the last 15ish yrs

No real group on a quest, there is travel but not in that sense.

I would say try it. I loved the world

Seconded. For when it was written, it's pretty non old school for the most part, traditional elements aside.

Has anyone read Gone Girl? I know it received a lot of hype but I tend to ignore hyped stuff on principle so have very little idea about it.

It's pretty decent. Flynn's best book is Dark Places, but all of them are readable even if Sharp Objects doesn't really go anywhere interesting.

Go ahead, read it when you have two lazy afternoons. The movie is a nice companion.

Hmm I think I preferred Gone Girl to Dark Places but that could be because I didn't like the main character in Dark Places that much...

Gone Girl is ace. Read the book first then watch the film, don't try to find anything out about it.

No, it's not exactly O.S. - it has enough common elements to satisfy that need, but is also original in concepts. I think you would like it. I would try a re-read myself, but I have no idea where they have all been stored.

If I remember correctly, you might even consider it a little meta.

The cool thing about Death gate is that up to Book 5, they can be read in any order.

It was my gateway to fantasy. And I read it 5 - 3 - 7 - 2 - 4 - 6 - 1

I suppose that might work, but really published order is the way to go. The stories do flow one into the other.

Nope.
Good blurb, but notice it's a follow up to an earlier trilo, tho some of the revs say that's not required reading.

If you're looking for a caper i recently picked this up on the strength of various revs...

I have read this, its the first part of a duology. Excellently written, the author does great character arcs.

Earlier trilogy is not really relevant.

I've read the earlier trilogy and loved it...and my sis-in-law has read SIX OF CROWS and loved it too. Great author.

Good to know. Is it super YA relationship and interpersonal drama, or not really?
