Jon

I don't think it could be a weak book; GRRM has left things set up too well. And, in contrast to Mr Jordan, he never felt the need to embrace a Shoot 'em up style of writing - ie, bring in big bad dude, have Rand kill big bad dude, rand goes on to next book (which has happened all through RJ).

The work of Martin seems to be less serialistic; more unified, but that could be me

Well the latest is that Martin has been sending manuscripts to his editors, which is a good sign, but none of them have been finished ones, which is obvioysly not what we want to hear. So the most telling news from th elast weeks still has to be the aformentioned comment from his wife/partner he's now got a good couple of months ahead of him in which he can write non-stop. She said this somewhere in April or early May, so I expect that he may have finished all of it by October. But that would be my most optimistic guess.

Ah, but if he'd written it in a more humane time-scale, the expectation wouldn't have been so high, would itPosted Image

As a devout Martin "fanboy", naturally I would love to have had the book in my hands already. But I can wait... and why the negativity towards the man? What the hell does he owe us? The book will come out when it is ready... and its that simple.

I love Martin's series as many others do but I don't care how you look at it, the guy is taking way too long. All the fanboys who keep defending this delay as a means to produce the highest quality book are, I think, living in a dream world. It shouldn't take a professional author up to 4-5 years to write a novel that is in the middle of an ongoing series. I've probably typed this same post about 32 other times already in this thread but for some reason it makes me feel good to come in here once a month and let off some steam on this subject.

For the amount of time we have been waiting the book better be damn near 4000 pages long when it is released and my copy better have a $100 bill fall out of it as well.

Well I found reading my shampoo bottle in my shower more exciting than reading that reviewer's on line short short story:

http://www.infinityp...s/rivereyes.htm

Besides, he admits to not liking most fantasy or escapist literature in general. The following quote shows that aDavid Matthew's reviews should not be relied on my fans of Erikson and probably of fantasy in general:

"Towards my late teens, when I was reading a lot of fantasy, I enjoyed long, rambling epics. I had more time on my hands, but another factor applied: there was something warm and cosy about inhabiting an author's world for a long time. Not since then have I understood so easily the term escapism. A Game of Thrones, ultimately, failed because I did not want to go back there; nor did I like it much for the duration of my tenure."

Wow, there's been a minor flame war going on here and i wasnt invited!?

There's me being spoiled on what book to read next and complaining about there being too many good books to read in a life time and you people are actively waiting for a book to be released and spending all this time arguing about whether GRRM is a 'bad man' for taking so long? Tsk, tsk, tsk...

Its not even like asoiaf is all that good or something. Posted Image

I bet it is, the poor man. Perhaps the delay is caused by angst created by reading threads such as this?! My gawd, look what we've done! Posted Image

In the real world, as you so eloquently put it, there are deadlines and if you don't meet them you get a pink slip on a Friday afternoon and an escort from the premises. Why should I expect any less from an author?

I see your understanding of the real world is as complete as it appears. GRRM doesn't punch a clock. He doesn't get paid by the hour (more's the pity in his case). He doesn't have deadlines that he /must/ meet, like for a newspaper or a magazine. Whatever gave you the impression that there was some sort of deadline that GRRM must meet? Is it your righteous indignation that you personally are being made to wait an absolutely unreasonable length of time to find out who the next person is that gets penetrated by The Imp?

Let me ask you a question - how long did it take JRRT to complete Lord of the Rings?

If GRRM was some sort of newbie hack I'm sure he'd be under the gun a lot more. But he's a veteran author with like 30 years under his ample belt, and no publisher in their right mind is going to give him an ultimatum, or a 'pink slip', as you so eloquently put it.

Hahaha. That's /so/ laughable. A Song of Ice and Fire is almost solid gold to any publisher in the world. Like there wouldn't be a huge bidding war for the rest of the books if GRRM was axed!

To the author, the consequences of the delay in AFfC are minor. GRRM loses the time value of the money he'd surely have made, but big deal. Instead of making big bucks in 2002, he'll make big bucks a few years later. He's obviously not in it purely for the $$$. I'm sure that as much as you (and me) want the book finished, he wants it more. A lot more. More than anyone else!

Oh yeah, another consequence is getting blasted on internet discussion boards. I'm sure that one is causing him to lose a /lot/ of sleep.

Yeah but at least with Michealangelo you could see the results rather than just taking his word for it. lol

That is a poor review. If you ask me, it seems rather pompous. I would probably want to beat that person up if I knew him/her in real life.

Mith: Gunslinger was oringinally released over twenty years ago(1982). That'a a fact. The second book came out in 1987, third 1991, fouth 1997 and the rest this year.

As for GRRM's sales figures. According to publishersweekly.com aSoIaF had sold over 800 000 copies by 2001(I tink that was the year)That would most likely just be in North America though. In comparison RJ's CoT sold about 1 million copies last year in North America. Erikson according to the publishers site had sold over 250 000 pre MT or mb HoC since I don't know when they put that on the site. That's obviously a high amount for a UK published fantasy author seems they are boasting about it.

Currently reading the collected graphic novels of GRRMs "Wild Card" series.

However, surely the idea of Wild Cards was to create a prose Superhero genre separate from comic books...and,Oh the irony here we have a comic book of a novel ,spoofing comic book themes...confusing but entertaining.

Back to the Booze.
