Does he have an actual obligation to his fans? I would say not really but it is common sense to stay on your fans good sides and I'm sure he has no wish to alienate his fans (and income!)

Believe it or not, there is actually a world wide law which states that GRRM must finish one book every two years.
I was talking to god over instant messanger the other day. We both decided that the pain of waiting is so unbearable that we are gonna kill ourselves if it doesn't come out this year. God wants to start a giant online petition of people that will commit suicide if the book isn't out this year. I think we all should notify interpol first at least. Maybe they can do something. Maybe we can organize some wordly ban of burritos and conventions.
I personally think if Martin doesn't release this book we should send him to a prison in Cuba, or put Martin in one of Saddam's old torture chambers. Goodkind can be the sexual torturer since he hates fantasy books and is obviously experienced with sexual torture. Terry will force George to lick his latex panties, which will tickle because of George's bristly beard.
Hey! That last part sounds like a great idea for a novel, Terr! Yeah, you should be able to get it done in one month. Why can't George work as well as you????????

If Robert Jordan took as much time and effort as GRRM does, perhaps I'd still be interested in the Wheel of Time series....
I used to be of the opinion that this delay in the release of AFFC probably meant that this might be a weak book, compared to the first three. Now I am leaning to the fact that GRRM is determined to make sure that AFFC knocks us all on our collective asses....

I rarely, rarely, rarely dream but last night I did and it was a weird one. I was in my local bookstore and I saw A Feast For Crows sitting on the shelf and I was shocked because I didn't even know it was out. Then I saw a bunch of people from this forum sitting on those big comfy couches they have there for you to read in (don't ask me how I knew who they were, I think I just associated names on here with anonymous people) and they all gave me a look like "Yeah you moron, its been out forever".
Anyway, just thought I'd share that. Then I woke up and was disappointed. I actually thought I had bought a copy and it was lying on my desk

About damned time. But to be honest, after having waited so long, I can no longer summon the enthusiasm for this book I might have once had. I've kind of gone off the series during the wait. And reading the sample chapters that he's released, and the summaries of other chapters, doesn't really fill me with much optimism. It seems that very little happens in them.
The only GRRM work I've read since ASoS is The Sworn Sword short story, and I thought that sucked. I'm looking forward to the Bonehunters and quite a few Playstation 2 games (like Final Fantasy XII) more than AFFC now.

Uhm, i didnt read each and every one of the guys reviews and comparing his view from this review to what he said in others might discredit him, but it doesnt disprove what he is saying.

I'll gladly stick with it though. I would claim that Erikson and Martin have the best fantasy series I have read.

I read it, it was again very interesting. All the stuff that we've read from "Feast" sofar has been very good; for all the problems he has had it s a relief to see that at least there doesn't appear to be a drop in quality, not in the slightest. Of course, only Feast itself may give final proof of that, but sofar things are looking very good.

And lest we forget, that would mean releasing it against the latest Harry Potter. Not the same market, i know, but fantasy is narrown enough that setting even the relatively successful SoIF series against the drug-laced-peanut-scoffing-herd-of-elephants that is Rowling seems like a poor choice.

I don't think that's a very good review - don't get me wrong Martin has some flaws - but some of the criticisms there would be relevant to Erikson as well (unkillable characters are now a good thing?). If people are thinking about whether to read Martin they should try AGOT (all of it!) and then decide whether they like it. Think about how many people are put off by GOTMs start but love it by the end - for Martin its similar.
"extremely graphic violence"? - I didn't notice this - Tolkien has equal and Erikson is more violent. (Erikson is best - Martin next, then Tolkien).
"He does not really believe in heroism or villainy" - Is this true? He's more subtle than most writers in this way (Jordan, Eddings etc) but even if this is true is it a bad thing? Erikson is even more "grey" but he is the best fantasy author of the time (and what about R Scott Bakker?)

I dreamed a while ago that I had AFFC and was reading the first chapter, it was a Jon pov. I remember it was very good and explained a lot of things (which I of course forgot when I woke up). The dream was so vivid that when I did wake up I fumbled for the book to carry on reading, it took me seconds to realize it was a dream. Major disappointment.

The last draft of AFfC I've read was a little over 900 pages in length. He told me last week he's well over 1K now, but I don't know when he'll print out another draft, especially since he just tore up a big section and started rewrites. (Note that ms. pages do not have the same amount of words on it as a page in a hardcover book, since a ms. is formatted in the traditional double-spaced, one side of a page that has been the standard since the advent of the typewriter.

Jon, Jon, Jon... you are more defensive towards Martin than even I am towards Jordan. It shocks me. I can't help being cynical towards Martin as so many of his devoted fans seem to think he can do no wrong and keep shrugging off all his mistakes with excuses. Plus it is fun to see people get riled up about it and defend him, takes some of the pressure off Jordan. 
Seriously, though, what does he owe us? Well technically he owes us nothing just like my favorite hockey team owes me nothing. Yet I still expect the world from them and I think it is fair, as a fan of Martin, to critisize a four year delay on his next novel while he waddles around the States eating cheeseburgers with his fans at Cons and writing short stories.
