What's in a Name? Your name, specifically...

I can't be the only person out here who is interested in the names people choose for themselves. So I want to know, what made you choose the name you have, or change it from one you had?

Is it a character from a book (and if so, which book/game/movie/song/etc did it come from)? Is it a strange eldritch god, a nickname, an animal, a collection of funny sounding words?

I originally wanted Sparrow as my forum name because I had been wandering in and out of the forum, just lurking for a while before I signed up, and I wanted something representative of the flitting-in-and-out style that I started with. I also wanted something gender-neutral, to see if that changed the way people interacted with me. But Sparrow was taken, so I decided Starling was an acceptable alternative ;)

Now everyone else needs to join in the storytime and satisfy my curiosity!

Where's GH with thread necromancy to bring us the old thread (also named the same)?
It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. Well, I asked in the PEN group message if there was one, and no one seemed to think there was.

Also, now that you have commented you have to explain your name. Tell us, o grumpy one, why do you feel a particular connection to this figment of someone's imagination?

When I was 14 I wanted Anomander Rake but it was taken. So I took the guy that was the resident ancient historian (I spent most of my time in the book forums back then). Over the years either me or the character have become more like the other.

I originally called my self Apt. I like short, easy names. It resembles my RL name. After a while it was pointed out to me that there was some confusion about my gender, since Apt in the books is a female. I had my name changed to the more neutral Aptorian after that. Since then I've had plenty of names for different occasions.

My name stems from one of the greatest low-brow catchphrases the Malazans have conjured up, and a direct use of it can be found in Toll the Hounds by Bluepearl ;) I'm rather proud of it.

My name is from 97-98 or something. I chose it because I was playing Age of Empires and called my empire "The Primates" That then quickly evolved into Primateus. No big story.

I was reading Deadhouse Gates when I signed up, hence the Seven Cities insult name ;) I knew I wanted Mezla and threw in the PigDog for added conviction.

You might think I picked D'rek because of the orgies, mass-murder and actually-female-but-not-everyone-knows-that properties (this last bit being more applicable on the forum several years ago), but I was D'rek before tBH came out and revealed those parts of the Malazan mythos. Those are all very good reasons for why I've kept the name since, though ;)
