I had never heard it called the Roman salute until this week. To be honest Ancient Rome by todays standards would not be judged any more favorably then hitler so either way why would you use it.

————————

Trump has ordered DEI employees be placed on leave.

Does he mean the departments in charge of DEI or does he mean people hired to meet DEI. Are records actually somewhere saying we hired ‘Martha’ because she is a black lesbian?

He means the federal DEI offices responsible for DEI things (Diversity training, hiring, ect.), and he also means to out anyone who was hired on that notion (but I doubt lists exist so I doubt that's going to be achievable), and he's apparently made his AG pressure private companies in the States to cease similar diversity programs, which again....the Free market can tell him to fuck off really, so that's likely not achievable either.

Another sidebar: The people in charge of the NFL have told the New England Patriots to shut down their BluSky account...and I'm not sure how else to read that except to bow to Elon and Trump for X and Meta's benefit....because there are zero other reasons to actually REDUCE your cross-platform social media exposure by shutting down the one on a single social media site and leave up the rest....Anyone know if the people in charge of the NFL are right wing shitbags?

They are all filthy rich. Make your own assumptions (but yes, they lean conservative as most wealthy people do).
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

I’m scared of checking the box on disabilities because I have a history of seizures… I guess i shouldn’t anymore.

There are protections available once you have been offered the job. But there is some level of need for trying to work for a larger, well run company that already is well down the road of inclusion and is unlikely to rewind.

Well Trump just went full crazy (according to Wall Street):

Quote

"With oil prices going down, I'll demand that interest rates drop immediately," he told the crowd of business leaders and politicians gathered in Davos, Switzerland, adding that "likewise they should be dropping all over the world."

https://finance.yaho...-175554668.html

Granted, that had been my initial assumption about what he'd do, before sundry experts assured the world that Trump would never do something so insane as go against the bond market. Stock market's down. Even my risk asset heavy portfolio. That monster just cost me nearly 0.02%! My Guidewire, Vertiv (AI data center cooling/power/infrastructure), Alaska Airlines, and Planet Labs are doing nicely though, partly because of Trump. And as I wrote before it could be the right thing to do (particularly to bring down housing inflation, because high mortgage rates are a major contributing factor)... if done responsibly, and in the context of deflationary policies...

But he says a lot of things; we'll see if he actually fires Powell and tries to defy the almighty wrath of the Bond Vigilantes.

The text of the amendment would still prohibit a third term if the first two were consecutive — prohibiting former Presidents Bush, Obama and Clinton from running again [...]

"He is dedicated to restoring the republic"

lol... "restoring the republic" to rule by Mad King Gorge?

(As he gorges on Canada, of course!)

But seriously... there is a very strong chance that the Supreme Court will have a valid-ish enough legal loophole for allowing him to effectively seek a third term:

Quote

The 22nd Amendment says that no person can be elected as president more than twice. It doesn't say that no person could serve as president for more than two terms. [...] Trump could run as vice president in 2028, with some patsy at the top of the ticket. Then, if they win, at 12:01 p.m. on Inauguration Day, that patsy could resign, making Trump president a third time. [...] if we go by a rigid textualist reading of the 22nd Amendment, it could happen.

Spoiler

https://slate.com/ne...nversation.html

And there is no restriction on the number of times an individual can be elected Vice President, so Trump could keep on doing this until he dies (if he ever does...).

Not surprised tbh.

Now three things will happen:

Dems will shout a lot about it but nothing will change and a couple of them might vote for it.

Some Reps will wring hands a bit and go "ooh I'm not sure about this..." Then vote for it.

The rest of the Reps will goose step into line and vote for it without any concerns whatsoever.

Any real resistance will be quashed.

It's not going to get the 2/3rds majority it needs in the House, much less the Senate... or 3/4ths of the states (it's a constitutional amendment).

But your conclusion in that final line may still be accurate. Especially if Trump succeeds in purging intelligence, federal law enforcement, and the military (... or just the military... then he will be quashing away, all the live long day...).

Three more days before he passes an exec order changing the name to 'The United States of Trump ™©®'. Four days max.

It's spit in an ocean, but it's been fascinating (kind of gratifying too) to watch over on reddit as sub after sub ban links/cuts/caps/anything from xwitter because of musk's salute.

The thing is, when people cling to these things and forget that the last near decade has been this man stomping over every tradition, rule, system, law or otherwise, facing not only no consequences for doing so (both as a president, and a private citizen), and even CONSTANTLY being given the A-ok to have done them by the highest court in their land...the emperor has not a stitch of clothing.

Like yes technically it needs 2/3rds of the House, the Senate and 38 states to make an amendment...but a full 9 years of this man ignoring that shit and being allowed to do whatever because no one will stop him means that even THOSE checks and balances mean sweet fuck all. I mean he's currently grifting off a crypto scam rug pull to the tune of billions and no one is stopping him...until the US reckons with their lack of ability to enforce their rules and laws on individuals like Trump and his billionaire buddies....it's a failed state and I have no faith in it as an outsider.

Trump will get a third term, and I will believe that until it doesn't actually happen or somebody ACTUALLY stops him. Because I spent the last 9 years of my life being told by various sources that "He can't do this, it's against the law" and then "He's doing it, but here's why he will be stopped before he finishes doing it" and then "I can't believe he did that...", rinse and repeat for every single scandal.

Fun extra fact: China (who had already been positioned to become the world leader in the future in clean energy), jumped to that lead due to Trump backing out of stuff like the Paris Agreement again...

I'm no expert, but wouldn't be surprised if china is lying about that. That said, trumpler is likely going to set green energy back fifty years before he's done.
