What kind of crap statement is this? There is a difference between your platoon captain not being your buddy who plays cards with you on weekends and your captain issuing you only 5 bullets because winners don't miss and telling you if you die he wont write your family a letter because he doesn't write letters for losers. Is this a completely outrageous analogy? Yes but somehow it seems to fit with your statement.

I read an article not too long ago about families being split apart by the whole Trump cult of personality thing. A husband or a son become enamored with the whole Trump internet sphere, get dragged in and become completely alienated from the rest of their family. Like all cults, the trump cult teaches you words and phrases that are used only within the cult and makes it much harder for you to communicate outside of it. Cuck, soyboy, NPC, SJW, virtue signaling. That whole collection of nonsense. Watching Nico the last year feels very much like that. He's spiraling into a cult and have become entirely incapable of communicating with anyone outside of it.

Whats a soyboy? Sounds creepily sexual

Much of their terminology is creepily sexual.

From what I gather Soyboy is tied to the idea that soy contains estrogen and so people whom eat lots of soy product ( you know, vegans and other liberal pussies whom are not real meat eating men) become more feminine. It is of course complete nonsense, and does nothing more than reveal the user of the phrase to be a poorly educated manchild, but they don't realise that's what they sound like because they are incapable of looking outside of their little trump bubble.

I believe it's some nonsense about people who drink soymilk and the like get low testosterone and people with low testosterone obviously are not real men. Real men of course being overweight neck beards who hate women and like lolita porn.

Thus completing the circle and making them all NPCs!

Drinking soy turns you into a... *gasp*.... male feminist!

That was the gist I gathered from Urban Dictionary. As with all the rest of that ilk, it's uneducated nonsense.

It's certainly nonsensical enough that whenever I hear these terms being used I automatically tune out the speaker. I've simply lost the ability to consider that those people have anything interesting to say. That may be a bad thing, but it's not my fault. Their continued stupidity simply stole that ability away from me.

Soy really does mess with your natural estrogen, though. Soy has a very high amount of isoflavones, which the estrogen receptors in your body react to in a similar manner as they react to the natural estrogen in your body. The reaction is weaker to isoflavones than to natural estrogen, but the isoflavones can certainly still have some effect - especially if you were eating a LOT of soy, or drastically alternating between high amounts of soy and then none, or if your body already produces an unusually high/low amount of natural estrogen.

Of course, estrogen exists in both men and women, and its effects are very complex. For most people the isoflavones' effect is going to be healthy for you anyway! But you can see how a dumb and/or gullible person who conflates men=testosterone, women=estrogen in their head could get suckered into believing that overabundance of soy consumption is "effeminizing" men after reading a biased summary of the research paper studying the interaction of soy and estrogen.

And, of course, most of those biased summaries are being presented by the likes of Alex Jones and his many lesser-known imitators, who aren't really doing it because they actually believe/care about the political or social aspects of it, they just want to sell you their ultra-non-soy protein powder.

If you go on youtube and watch a single video about gaming, you become an honorary cult member. You will forever be subject to angry idiots yelling at the camera for 45 minutes to 7 hours, in front of an entire wall of NES cartridges. In 50 years the last image you'll see as you die will be Joe Rogan, Ben Shapiro, and Jordan Peterson triple-french kissing.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

Thanks worry, I can't unread that D:

The soy stuff is also (at least tangentially) related to the milk drinking thing where white supremacists are videoing themselves chugging large bottles of (cow's) milk because something something master race white people are less likely to be lactose intolerant (just ignore all the not white people who also historically spent a lot of time around cows and have similar levels of tolerance).

I look at Giantbomb videos on youtube now and then. They're vocally disgusted by the whole gamergate nonsense and the alt-right sphere in general. And still YouTube thinks I would love to watch hours of Jordan Peterson puking on himself.

I'm still not entirely sure what gamergate was about. I think I'm happier that way.

*Clears throat* Well Cause, before the leftist Zionist fake news destroyed the reputation of Gamer Gate, the movement was actually about more transparency in media. Specifically about the relationship between the press and the developers/publishers. Funny enough, when the shitstorm then descended on the industry and the media, the whole thing suddenly became about misogyny and the evil alt-right. Instead of examining their own ethics, the media made it about feminists and hatespeech. Quietly the media have fixed a lot of their shit in the interim but before Gamer Gate became the hive of scum and villainy it is now, there was that brief moment where it actually had merit. I think it lasted a week before it started rotting from the inside.

It started with the ex boyfriend of a minor games developer accusing his ex of all manner of nonsense that was quickly disproved. This however did not prevent a bunch of angry men on the internet from fomenting a hate campaign against her. It all started getting serious traction on 4chan, because of course it did. The exgirlfriend in question had to flee her own home for a while after receiving numerous of death threats. Also, for whatever reason only apparent to the same angry gamers, Anita Sarkeesian was pulled into the whole thing. Despite her having done nothing more in the interim than produce a few youtube videos about feminism and video games. Claims about collusion and bribery within the gaming press proved largely baseless, which influenced the movement not at all.

Not long after that Milo Yiannopoulos got involved as a major name in the movement, and the whole thing somehow managed to get even worse from there.

Apt likes to pretend there ever was something more to gamergate than rampant misogyny from angry man children. All this stuff about ethics in journalism is a thinly veiled attempt to legitimize what was inherently and from the very start an organized harassment campaign.

If you hate yourself and want to read about the whole thing, wikipedia has a decent summary: https://en.wikipedia...ate_controversy .

Edit: I figured I'd throw in another couple of sources, in case someone where to read whatever comes of this and think maybe there was some worth to gamergate.

I don't think there's any reason to rehash the old debate from the feminist frequency thread:

https://forum.malaza...eo-game-tropes/

... But, okay lets go, I don't really have time for this discussion, but I love these debates... the links you posted have me very tempted to suddenly sympathize with Trump and the evil leftist media spinning stories. I cant get the Washington Post article to load for some reason but, Gawker is a terrible and biased source for anything really but especially Gamer Gate. The guardian article however certainly covers some of the matter but glosses over a lot of other stuff. I don't even remember this twine stuff.

The stuff I recall revolves around more than one discord thread (or what ever devs and media used then) being revealed where debates where had in secret about how to spin stories. Stories about Kotaku declaring gamers dead because something something avant gard post-gaming opinions. Zoe Quinn crying about doxing but feeling free to dox other developers or entrepeneurs she doesn't like (might be a competitor?). Quinn making fake doxxing accusations. Media aggressively pushing a pro-feminist stance in the wake of gamer gate, ousting normal thinking people who thought both sides where full of shit (on both sides, ON BOTH SIDES!), etc. As far as I recall Kotaku, Polygon and the like had plenty of very opinionated writers throthing at the mouth at any criticism of the narrative they were spinning.

Was it debunked that Zoe Quinn was sleeping around with a bunch of developers/media? The outrage there wasn't her sex life but that she, allegedly, slept with some media guy directly or indirectly involved with reviewing her game. I wont get into the sleazier parts of that whole mess.

Just to clarify here. I am not defending what Gamegate turned into, nor the harassment of Quinn and Co. but there was a core of truth there in terms of transparency and relationships and I never saw a single media related personality or outlet step forward and admit that they probably were being unprofessional. Quite the contrary (EDIT: See Total Biscuits interview with Stephen Totilo), I've seen plenty of content, including Giant Bomb, where the media happily defend their "incestuous" relationship with the video game industry because how else can they build a network and get information? The counter argument there is that very little video game coverage is actual journalism but it's a pretty hollow argument when sites do preview, review and lets play coverage of games. Giant Bomb tends to avoid reviews of companies they are friendly with, for example Iron Galaxies and the Rock Band people but there's so much more to it than that. I trust Giant Bomb to be on the level but there's a hell of a lot of sites out there I don't have the same faith in. Especially the ceaseless circle jerk that goes back and forth between the indie scene and the woke media - Like Waypoint, Kotaku, Polygon, etc.

Again, call me tin foil paranoid, but I swear the media tried to squash their own mess by blaming it all on the evil meninists and 4chan. I am telling you people, there were bad people on both sides. On both sides!

This is totally off-topic Apt, but there's a very clear bias in "gaming journalism". This summer's scandal around the firing of the Arena.net dev who started a pro-feminist shitstorm on her Twitter by insulting a fan demonstrated that to me- when pretty much all the sites I frequent had writers jump to the rescue of a pretty clearly toxic person, who happened to be a game dev.

Yup. I keep bringing up Giant Bomb because I think a few of us follow them, and they're pretty great, but both their podcasts had nothing but criticism for Arena.net and little criticism of the crazy employee tanking the companies PR.

There's this tendency for video game media, ever since Gamer gate, to instinctually rally around what ever identity politic nonsense is going on and avoid raising questions. Sad. Make video games great again. MVGGA!
