Finished Gaunt 3 Necropolis last night. It finished strong and put it at the same level as the first two. Going to read some other stuff before book 4, so BK will fly by me.
I’m still me so I’d expect more of a slow jog instead of a flight. Bk 3 has been nothing short of badass imo. Bk 1 was so utterly basic, Bk 2 provides fantastic character build and an insane climax, I hope I’m store for that again in Bk 3’s endgame.
What put you off the 1st portions of Bk 3? I saw you say it’s to battle heavy. Is that all?
It didn't put me off, my favorite fiction is military Sci-Fi and fantasy. I just prefer less battle scenes. And all in all, I loved the book.

Budget probably. There is one film, Ultramarines but it's pretty bad, don't go anywhere near it.
The good news is that GW are working on something:
There are also two fan projects that were well received. Helsreach, which does a decent job to give us a movie version of that novel, using the audio from the audiobook.
And Astartes which is awesome and shows exactly why the Adeptus Astartes, the Space Marines, are also known as the Angels of Death.

Power weapons look just like normal melee weapons, but what makes them actually useful is that when activated they are sheathed with an energy field that disrupts solid matter. This energy field can in turn slice through even the toughest of armor.

Titans are giant mecha and every race has their own. The Imperium has several types of Titans. Warhound-class ("small" ones for "scouting"), Reaver-class (medium sized), Warlord-class (big and serve as the backbone of the Titan Legions), Imperator-class (when overkill isn't overkill enough, you get one of these). There's one in Helsreach (doesn't shoot as many guns as it should or as devastating as it should but Helsreach was done by one guy as a passion project so I can forgive it when it's rough - like the close combat scenes). Titans are piloted by a Princeps that is mind linked with the machine and aided by moderati who operate the guns (depending on the size of the Titan, there are Mechanicus engineseers tending the reactor and companies of skitarii infantry for repelling enemy boarding parties). Some Princeps are linked via a headjack, other are fully immersed in a casket, it depends on the type of Titan and which Forgeworld built it (thus the STC they have varies). Once linked they sense what the Titan senses and it's a very addictive feeling, the power of becoming this huge warmachine (or God Machine as it's often called). Oh and not just anyone can pilot these things, because they have VERY bellicose Machine Spirits (it's not clear of this is really old AI no one understand anymore from the Dark Age of Technology or what, but they are there and that cannot be denied) that will always try to push the Princeps into obliterating stuff. The Machine Spirits of Titans are powerful enough that Princeps have reported Titans dreaming during transport, remembering past battles or growing irritated at the forced stillness, trying to move on their own to find an enemy to kill. So only strong willed individuals can merge with and control these things. Deployment of Titans requires a petition being sent to the Adeptus Mechanicu and they are very stingy with these things, not wanting to risk them unless truly needed.
Oh they get around the problem of being easy to see and thus shot at by everything by being protected by several void shields, the kind that protect large cities and battleships. So you need either really lots of guns or really big guns to deal with these things.
The novel Titanicus deals with a Titan Legion defending a young Forgeworld from a Chaos Titan Legion and it's set somewhere in the Sabbat Cluster if I recall.
Spoilered for size, don't open on phone.
So Space Marines are the genetically modified warriors that the Emperor created to conquer the galaxy with and reunite all of humanity's lost colonies (there was an initial galaxy spanning human empire that got torn down/apart when one of the Chaos gods was born, making the warp untraversable, isolating worlds and leaving everyone to get by on their own ..... which went about as well as expected - oh also the AI rebelled and tried to pull a SkyNet because if things are going to hell they might as well go all the way). The Imperial Fists were one of the initial Legions, thus they are from the First Founding (other First Founding which remain loyal are the Salamanders, Space Wolves, White Scars, Ultramarines, Dark Angels, Blood Angels, Iron Hands, Raven Guard). After the Horus Heresy, where half the Legion turned traitor (Death Guard, Night Lords, Emperor's Children, Word Bearers, Alpha Legion, Sons of Horus, World Eaters, Thousand Sons, Iron Warriors), the Legions were split into Chapters (this was called the Second Founding) so that no one man can wield the awesome and destructive might of an Astartes Legion (in High Gothic they are called Adeptus Astartes, in Low Gothic which is what most people use they are called Space Marines, I tend to prefer the High Gothic name so I use it more, in case it got confusing which term I kept using and what you see elsewhere).
Ok with that bit out of the way, the Imperial Fists are known for their specialty in building fortifications and there is a joke among the fans that the Imperial Fists will turn anything they come across into a fortress out of sheer habit. They were one of the three Legion that defended Terra at the final battle of the Horus Heresy. Their gene sire and Primarch, Rogal Dorn, was in charge of the defense of the Solar System and every military asset within it. The IF are generally a stable and sane Chapter, no fanaticism or cannibalism or other weird cultural quick - the weirdest they get is an obession with conquering pain by force of will and discipline and they are known for being super stubborn and not taking one step back. They have a slight defect in their geneseed that means they now lack two of the organs usually implanted in Astartes (considering the genetic flaws of the Wolves and the Blood Angels, this is basically nothing). They lack the Betcher's Gland, which allows them to produce acidic spit and the Sus-an Membrane which allows them to enter a state of suspended animation, usually used if critically wounded to give the Apothecaries more time to reach them and try to save them.
Spoilered for size again, don't open if on phone.

I'm not going to confuse BK about the Alpha Legion right now. They don't have any presence in the Sabbat Worlds so he doesn't need to concern himself with their brand of ....... why the heck do I now imagine the AL being led by Shadowthrone? Because that would be hilarious. And by Iskaral Pust. Because.

Here's a generic WH40K query.
Are there mercenaries that fight for the Imperium of man?
Like Human mercs, not xeno (are there xeno mercs, maybe Tao?)

Don't see any reason why there wouldn't be. I remember one story were the Tau hired human mercenaries (which ended up just being =I= dickery) and the loxatl and tarellian dog soldiers are mentioned as being mercs. The Kroot as well. The Imperium however will never use xenos mercs (outside of Rogue Traders skirting the law like usual and Inquisitors being their usual law onto themselves) because even if they get beyond their own xenophobic prejudices the various xenos hate their guts anyway. Tarellian dog soldiers will fight for free if against the Imperium because someone Exterminatused a few of their worlds.
But seeing how many guns for hire and bounty hunters there are among humans, full blown PMCs are probably a thing as well. Actually any sizable Rogue Trader House kinda has their own PMC when you think about it. I think mercenaries are mentioned quite a bit in the Eisenhorn trilogy.

Working my way through Horus Heresy 53 - Titandeath and, boy, this is hard work. At this point, I just want this to be over with and at least get to the bloody Siege. I've tried *very* hard not to be spoilered about the outcome so I will persist.

I like the fact that Abnett showed that integrating new people wasn't a totally seamless and no problems type of thing. And he didn't show the problems by having pointless fights or something, just small things everywhere, like Gaunt being biased in always favoring the Tanith portion of his regiment and they all feel this.
