I looked through the various Omnibus and Anthology books and found a few more things of interest:
The Great Devourer: The Leviathan Omnibus - this contains the Valedor novel I mentioned earlier plus plenty of others that deal with the rampaging hordes of the Tyranids (and just in case you think zerg, GW did the nids first, not that it matters since 40k takes ideas from literally everywhere)
Servants of the Machine-God - Adeptus Mechanicus anthology, stories do a good job showing the various cyborg killers and gigantic mecha they love so much
Deathwatch Anthology - has 2 novels and various short stories that follow the space marines from various chapters seconded to the Deathwatch, xenos hunters and the militant arm of the Ordo Xenos (the Inquisition branch that specializes in countering the threat of the alien)
Fear the Alien (Anthology) - an anthology that shows various xenos threats to the Imperium, the highlight is Mistress Baeda's Gift which has a dark eldar courtship.
Sabbat Worlds (Anthology) - various stories set in the Sabbat Crusade, Iron Star should be skipped until you read Only in Death
Damocles (Anthology) - 4 novellas, showing the Imperium vs the Tau
War for Armageddon: The Omnibus - shows the war for the world of Armageddon, under attack by Orks. (it's a well named planet, the number of epic wars that took place there, most of them forgotten, as was the planet's orriginal name)
Flesh and Steel - crime, detective novel
The Beast Arises Omnibus Vol 1,2,3 - the biggest war vs the orks, when they had the galaxy by the balls (also sees lots of war on Armageddon before it got the new name)
The Gothic War Omnibus - didn't know they collected those 2 novels in an omnibus. Since it's the 12th Black Crusade (which was used as a backdrop for a fleet based game) this follows an Imperial captain and gives you naval warfare
They also made 3 Omnibuses for the Horus Heresy (that touch the start of the thing but it's something)
Crusade's End - 3 novels and 3 short stories this shows the start of the Heresy that ended what could have been the greatest empire ever and turned things into the grimdarkness of the present
The Razing of Prospero - good depiction of the Thousand Sons and Space Wolf legions, their cultures, the manipulations, hubris and tragedy that saw the purging of a loyal Legion
The Last Phoenix - follows the Emperor's Children Legion and a bit with the Iron Warriors.

He does the nightmare scape of WW2 in space very well, it can be jarring at times but the city siege in later books is basically saving private Ryan beach scene with Titans and las rifles.
A lot of the books can be looked at as take offs from particular wars and/or stories.
Just finished Anarch, when's the victory part 2 due??

An untrained psyker is a walking time bomb. Look at the stuff the trained ones can do (mind control people, transmit messages across the stars, shoot lightning, boil blood, summon daemons etc. the more powerful they are the more OP shit they can do) and imagine the untrained ones doing it by accident at the worst time. Also, and worse, the untrained ones are vulnerable to daemonic shenanigans. Because their Souls shine like candles in the night for the daemons of the Warp.
Trained psykers are: navigators, astropaths, space marine librarians, sanctioned psykers (usually used by the Guard) , some Inquisitors, all Grey Knights and the Emperor who is ludicrously game breaking OP over 9000 powerful. If He wasn't stuck on life suport, things would be different.
Eldar use spirit stones to keep themselves and their psykers safe. Dark eldar have none because no spirit stones. Necrons don't have any because Terminators. Tyranids have plenty and Hive Mind can't be possessed. Tau are blunter than a butter knife. Chaos worshipers are deluded and think the daemons are allies.

Yes these were eldar not dark eldar. Its ok, the Imperium doesn't bother to differentiate between them.
Hive is the Imperium's pet name for its Arcologies, cities on the scale of mountains. Once a world gets one, it ends up building more until it is more-or-less covered in hives, and we call the resultant mass of metal and humanity a Hive World. If you're not in one of the towers at the top, they're generally very shitty places to live, what with the gang-infested wretched hives of scum and villainy, starvation, hobos due to lack of resources, forcible conscription for the Imperial Guard, and the occasional mutant tribes in the Underhive sewers, and such.

You have indeed. Yeah they get like Coruscant. The presence of a few Hive cities is enough to get a world listed as a Hive world, even if it's still mostly untouched.

Sure. Spoilered for size.
I don't know if the Omnibus has the map for Vervunhive so I'm putting it here. From what I recall and looking at the art, Vervunhive hasn't reached single mountain edifice size yet, it's still "young" for a Hive City. Of course, not all Hive Cities look alike. For all the standardization that the Imperium has, there are just as many local quirks and idiosyncrasies. So a Hive City doesn't have to be a single mountain like thing, it could look like a small mountain chain or whatever else.

Don't recall any instances of healing magic in book one. They do have first aid kits and such but Gaunt has no psykers in his regiment. Depending on the wound they might get cybernetic replacements. Varl, Domor and Feygor all get them.

Yah, don't go expecting dragonballZ magic fireballs, that's not the style.
Psykers can dish out some shit but that's not really what the ghosts books are abouts they're about ordinary men and women achieving the extra ordinary through sheer blood, sweat, tears and fething grit.
