I feel for you. Stuff in 40k tends to be big. The Imperium is rarely subtle. Check any trailer for Battlefleet Gothic to see what they look like.

The ship they are on is an Adeptus Mechanicus one I think. Think machine worshiping cyborg cult. They are part of the Imperium but have complete autonomy because they are only ones who know how the tech works.

You will get there. The middle books of the series are some of the very best. One in particular holds my spot as Best Ghosts book.

Especially once you settle into everyone and who they are and what they do.

Not a spoiler

A randomish question

So we know the names of the 4 chaos god's, their name is used almost as a weapon.

When the beati talks of the glorious powers she says their names are too bright to say.

Is the emperor assisted by other powers? Are there more out there than the 4? I always assumed the 4 chaos god's were super psychers like the emperor, why wouldn't there be more?

If you want some alien elves then good news. There are eldar in the next one. 40k has its aliens but the Sabbat Crusade is focused on the followers of chaos.

Ghostmaker btw is a collection of short stories, each focusing on a different Ghost.

Ghostmaker is an excellent wee book for giving you a really good grounding in some of the major players in the ghosts

I rolled through Traitor General there and onto His Last Command.

I forgot how this one kicked off, awesome, and an awesome display of what the ghosts can do

Those shorts were written after book 1 if I recall. While it's good and fun from the start, the series does get better as it goes on, as Abnett puts more points in his writting skill. There are plenty of very dramatic "oh fuck" moments. I'm pretty sure the last book in the series had me going "oh fuck" constantly and then "OH FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK!".

First and only was, afaik, Abnrts first full length novel, so it's a little raw in places, but he just goes from strength to strength as an author

Other than librarians when we put the book info into our system, who ever checks the copyright date thing?
