Yeah there are a few things that editing missed. How the long-las works changes as well at one point. As does the gender of one of Gol Kolea's kids - thought that at least is acknowledged in the text with characters going "wait, wasn't Yoncy a boy?" "nah man, we just rolled a 1 on our spot check". Which is at least funny.

It happens.

As Garak says, there's a few inconsistencies, I caught the adjudant one this time through as well.

But as far as I know (up to book 10 on reread) and remember going forward there are no real "THE TIMELINE IS NOT IMPORTANT" massive bloops, which given its 16 odd books, and the gap between one and two is impressive enough.

There's a lot of continuity through the series, stuff from book 3 can become relevant in book 7, a lot of the wee foreshadowing parts are only becoming apparent on my reread.

The kids gender thing, its acknowledged, and sometimes I think it's a part of the overall story
Spoilers up to book 16

Space Marine is the only one that comes to mind as having both PC and console versions.

Have just come off a 2 hr trek into the factions of 40K on YouTube. Yeah I got a lonnnng way to go if I want my nerd badge to.

I’m not gonna lie my enthusiasm has really taken a hit after that fuck up. Makes me question how serious I now want to take this guy if he just can’t remember his own fucking story. I can see this slipping by in a multi author series but I mean just come on dude that is way more then just a brain fart.

Keep going. You forgave Erikson a bunch of stuff and it turned out well.

It's a fairly minor fuck up, look at the GotMisms we shrug off, same deal, big gap between first book and the rest, and the one you caught is really inconsequential in the grand scheme.

Just rolled through Blood Pact, it's a nice calm down after the shit storm at Hinzerhaus

Not in every book but there are a few. They get balanced with the decent ones.

Yes Mkoll is awesome. Among the scouts I also like Bonin. My favorite Ghost however will always be Rawne (who I always picture looking like Karl Urban). I like how he evolves over time.

I'm curious what you'll think about Necropolis, the third novel, because that's where I felt it really click for me and it remains one of my favorite novels from the series and 40k in general. Of course I like siege stories and urban combat so it scratches that itch.

I'm about 2/3 into Necropolis, I like it, but not as much as the first two. It's too battle heavy, I enjoy what happens between the battles more.

Ok, this is a short recommandation list (not going to mention the rest of the Gaunt's Ghosts series it's obvious):

Belisarius Cawl: The Great Work (Adeptus Mechanicus focus)
The Infinite and the Divine (Necron pov novel, think Terminator + undead space Egypt)
Hero of the Imperium (Omnibus about a somewhat cowardly Commissar)
Path of the Dark Eldar (Omnibus with dark elves, backstabbing and crazy shit every other page)
Avenging Son (good look at the current state of the Imperium and the start of the Indomitus Crusade which tries to stabilize things before it;s to fucking late, this has huge fleet warfare)
Forge of Mars (Adeptus Mechanicus Omnibus about an exploration fleet - the space elves are also involved)
Cult of the Spiral Dawn (more alien stuff but this time they infiltrate society and create weird doomsday cults)
Brutal Kunnin' (ork novel)
Requiem Infernal (Halloween is over but this is spot on, very lovecraftian)
Titanicus (you get to see what the Titans are all about and this is one of the best novels for them)
Valedor (space elves of all types must unite-ish to fight off a fuck huge bug swarm, the Tyranids)
Fabious Bile: Primogenitor, Clonelord and Manflayer are 3 novels about THE mad scientist of 40k
Honour Imperialis (Imperial Guard omnibus, each novel deals with a different Guard regiment and conflict)
Eisenhorn Omnibus (the BEST Inquisition novels)
Ravenor Omnibus (the second best Inquisition novels)
Storm of Iron (this was my entry point to the setting, Chaos Marines laying siege to a fortress)
The Last Chancers Omnibus (think Dirty Dozen but in space)
Night Lords: The Omnibus (fucking awesome look at a traitor warband)
Jain Zar: The Storm of Silence (space elves novel)
Vaults of Terra: The Carrion Throne + The Hollow Mountain (great stuff on Terra)
Watchers of the Throne: The Emperor's Legion + The Regent's Shadow (more Terran stuff and a good look at the Emperor's personal Guards)
The Emperor's Gift (good look at the Grey Knights, the Space Wolves and the Inquisition being absolute cunts)
Fire Caste (Apocalypse Now in 40k)
Cadia Stands (the Fall of Cadia, the loss of THE most important fortress planet in the galaxy)
Carcharodons: Outer Dark (alien cults and maori inspired space marines)
Dante (the life of the current chapter master of the Blood Angels Chapter, a good look at their lore - the training and selection process of marines differes from Chapter to Chapter btw)
Blades of Damocles (first conflict between the Imperium and the Tau - what the community calls blue space commies, decent look at both Marines and Tau)

I'm not going into the Horus Heresy novels since I'd recommend almost the entire series + the siege of terra + the primarch novellas.

Requiem Infernal is the Space Nuns. Dante is the space marines, the genetically enhanced and indoctrinated warriors (the Blood Angels also happen to be freaking vampires - not literally but close enough).

What about the black people with the red eyes? They sound rather Star Wars Chiss like.

Those would be the Salamanders Chapter. All around decent dudes. It's the geneseed implantation that turns their eyes red and skin charcoal black. The TOme of Fire Omnibus collectes three novels and some short stories but I haven't read it so can't comment.

So this Path of D Eldar is good or just fluff?

It's good and pretty funny. The dark eldar are insanely evil and backstabby, the humor comes from just how much they scheme and plot and betray.

Get the omnibus. Book 4 is the start of a second trilogy but it's been George Martin years since we heard anything on that front. But the Omnibus gives a great story.

A bunch of 40k books are also available as audio books: https://www.blacklibrary.com/audio

And there are several audio dramas that exist only in that medium and which have higher production values (music, sound effects, multiple VAs). From those I heartily recommend for anyone interested:

Prophets of Waaagh! ( 3 short stories told from the ork POV, it's bonkers and funny: https://www.blacklib...-waagh-mp3.html

A Deadly Wit + Heirs of the Laughing God: Death's Mercy (Harlequin stories, the space clowns, again really funny): https://www.blacklib...ly-wit-mp3.html + https://www.blacklib...mercy-2019.html

Our Martyred Lady (Inquisitor Greyfax and the Living Saint Celestine, good story and I enjoy the performance of the VA): https://www.blacklib...et-cs-2018.html

And while not 40k I consider Realmslayer and Realmslayer: Blood of the Old World a must because 1)Gotrek 2)he's voiced by BRIAN BLESSED: https://www.blacklib...slayer-mp3.html + https://www.blacklib...d-mp3-2019.html

I would stick with all of the Ganunts Ghosts books first up until the end of Anarch, the last published book. Overtime they do give you a great mix of all the different war genre types (urban war, tank battles, space battles, covert battles) and if they dont get involved, they at least witness the type of fighting. And in my mind, Abnett does the kind of squad based characters better then Erikson. (Yes there is Fiddler, the Bridgeburners and the "important" Bonehunters but Abnett seems to have a fuller range of characters and the soldiers seem more believeable in places as well.)

I'd rate those two as decent. Not the best but not the worst.

Into the last section of First and Only. Should be finished tonight. Enjoyable worlds-building and introduction to the characters. I can see how this has a lot of room to grow from the foundation work laid in book 1.
