For DT albums? Black Clouds is hands down my favourite. Everything I love about DT condensed into one album.

That is an underrated album imo... apart from A Nightmare to Remember the first half is a bit boring, but the second half is absolutely astounding. The first part of TCoT is almost like a DT cover of Celestial Elixir. No need to mention TBoT.

I'd disagree - the album keeps me interested all the way through. There are some cool drum parts on AROP for instance (the flams before chorus #2 for instance).

Ill definitely listen to slayer as i've listened to a few of their songs but never really dug into it. That being said metallica is good for an occasional listen, though i fear i over consumed metallica when i was younger so its just not the same. (in general i can't stand a lot of the stuff from my teenage years.)

What sort of style are you looking to emulate/practice, though? I'm being a bit generic and over-simplistic here, but are you looking for 'raw' grunt voices (the cigarette/whiskey-style grumble that a lot of thrash bands use), growling screams (black metal), tortured screams (hardcore), high-pitched screams (speed, power metal), deep grunts (death metal) or just a wide vocal range?

Wide vocal range. Again, the goal is to get a feel for what's on the field and go more in depth if i find something i like.

Children of Bodom's finest moment was their cover of Oops I Did it Again by Britney Spears. Otherwise they're a bit meh. As for Megadeth and Pantera, they're important if you're interested in the history of the scene as they've both played important parts (plus the murder of Dimebag Darrell was quite a historic moment) but they're not really my thing. Couple of good tracks but there's a lot more interesting stuff out there.

The recommendations were done with a view towards their vocalists and what they accomplished. As i'm slowly learning how to do harsh vocals myself, its time i get educated as unlike classical, it's not like there's an established cannon of repertoire.

Melissa Cross, 'The Zen of Screaming'. You're welcome.

Which is absolute garbage and is actually just a marketing ploy to get you to pay for 500$ skype lessons with her. The majority of the stuff on the disk is basic stuff i already know and not actually useful. Most of the featured singers only really are in the disc because she needed to promote herself and as part of the deal they worked with her for free and maybe picked up a few things, but most of the singers on that album don't actively work with her.

Not metal, but I always found throat singing fascinating.

Also, again not metal, but Diamanda Galas might be worth studying.

When it comes to range, I would offer up Mike Patton (Faith no More), Mikael Akerfeldt (Opeth), James Maynard Keenan (Tool) or Sergej Tankian (System of a Down).
Yesterday, upon the stair, I saw a man who wasn't there. He wasn't there again today. Oh, how I wish he'd go away.

+1 for Serj. The man is a beast! Part of the reason the later SOAD albums were a lot poorer IMO was because he didn't do as much of the singing...

Malankazooie: You should check out The Hu or Hanggai.
I finally got around to listening to Jordan Rudess' Wired for Madness. Definitely a keeper. I actually prefer it to D/T.

It's been 9 years, and I still miss Ronnie...

Yup he was a Rainbow in the Dark if I may be so cheesy...

Incidentally I've roadied for a band called Budgie who Dio's guitarist, Craig Goldy played for. Really nice bloke, excellent guitarist.

My favorite Dio cameo. Lyrics NSFW

Regarding vocalists, I would add Claudio Sanchez to the list. Not particularly metal, but worth listening to. His voice takes a bit of getting used to, but he has so many different sounds. His 'blaart' (for lack of a better word) never fails to scare me (see Al the Killer or In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3 for an example). His lyrical constructs range from the amazing ('Don't close the coffin yet/I'm alive!") to the terrible ("When the world burns apart/There'll be a place/For your car"). Finally, his guitar interaction with Travis Stever is absolutely amazing. Every time I think C&C is a bit poppy, I listen to the guitars and realize that it is definitely prog.

That drummer is awful!!
Shameless self-advertising is shameless... :p (haven't had a chance to listen yet, I may give my opinion later. Is it original?)

It's an original song and not a cover, if that's the question.

New Sabaton album is shaping up to be an absolute belter. Just a shame Bismarck is a standalone single...

Just listened to it. Quite neat.
My main complaint is that your voice seems to be way too quiet. Due to that, I'm not sure on the next part, but it seems that you are singing through the breakdowns, which is a bit of a turnoff for me - kind of ruins the rhythmic effect. YMMV on this, though.

Definitely agree on the Sabaton album.

I'm only a stand in vocalist and can't really project well - mostly this demo is to show people what we sound like overall.

Additionally that song doesn't actually have any breakdowns. It's probably the only one of ours that doesn't. Whereas Song 1 (working title) has two. And Song 4 starts with one.

I really like Song 2. I'd rank it above Beetlebum.

Also Tengger Cavalry and Suld. Both heavier.
