50k isn't a normal novel length is it? Mine is looking to be 150k. Which I'll probably trim down a lot.

No, 50k is just the length (guesstimated) of the shortest 'novel' in Batey's bookshelf and thus the benchmark for completing in a month. Most novels are longer, yeah.
But usually if something is going to be written, I'll end up having not enough plot to write that much - which is a most disturbing realization. This time, it seems like I've lucked out on the plot I chose for NaNo and it's one with mileage.

As of today I have a shade under 39K words, and I'm pushing very hard to get as much done before this weekend as I possibly can, because I won't be able to write at all as of Friday night, sigh. That said, I know the story itself will be nowhere near completion at 50K words, but as long as I hit that number, I'm happy!

I will not be hitting it this year. I'm currently at 25k. Blergh. I'm thinking of doing this again in January after the holidays. Or just every month until I finish

oh man, 43k words, eight days left. i think i'm gonna do it, and i think the story might even fit in at under 60k. this has been an absolute blast. congrats everyone who's participating. no matter what your word count is on nov. 30, we can all agree that it's an amazing experience.

I second this. And if I can manage 4k words per day for the next eight days, you can make 50k, I'm sure of it!

I think I'm going to give myself a little chaos. Feel free to join in.
I'm setting Media Player (or whatever you use to listen to music) to random/shuffle. You must use the first sentence of every song that plays.

I forgot that I have a multilingual library. So new rule. You can use the sentence in its original language if you can fit it in. If not, translating it works to.
This also applies to cultural references if you're not on Earth or in relation to Earth.
Obviously my shuffle does nothing but throw Death, Black metal and The Lonely Island at me.

Holy crap. Just checked my NaNo mail (seeing as it had unread) before I headed off for the night. Week four pep talk, clicked on the first one. Didn't even look at the name in the message. Was reading through, thinking it had pretty solid advice. Liked it. Got to the end. Read the following and nearly had a heart attack! >.<
I know most of you probably won't have the same reaction (being people who bother to read message subject lines even when sleepy), but that really, really caught me off guard! XD Hadn't even realized it up until the title drop, lol. Ah well, that's some motivation for tomorrow, for sure!

Pep talk from Brandon Sanderson? Awesome!
I'm at 58k... and the whole story's stuck in another hole. So I introduced a new PoV character and killed off most of the faceless characters.
I hope it works.
God I miss the PS3. I want you baaack...
The month is nearly done. Good luck to all of us!

I hit the 50K on Friday night, though the story itself isn't done. Still, I'm most pleased and rather proud of myself. *Pats self on back*. To everyone who did it or is on the verge...yay!

New guy here, but pleased to know there are NaNoWriMo'ers here. Utter failure on my end. Only 25K. Schedule was a mucked up and I found out that simply desiring something wont make it happen. Better luck next year (I hope).

I like that attitude. Was thinking of doing the same thing.

Ah, guts. Well, at least you gave it a shot, and 25k is nothing to be ashamed of! I fully endorse JLV's idea of keeping at it until you get it done, too.

I also only have 25k. November ended up being the worst possible month for my free time, so that was unfortunate. I'm going to do my own little mini-NaNoWriMo in January, and you're free to participate if you feel up to it! I'll be starting a forum thread when it comes around.
Edit: Double crosspost.

Hrm, I like this idea. We can host a Malaz Post-WriMo WriMo contest. I'm thinking of knuckling down on another concept as soon as NaNo is over (admittedly in tandem with, you know, actually writing the *rest* of the book my 50k is part of XD), but if you're willing to let me continue that as part of the contest, I think it'd be great to have some encouragement of this kind again!

Yeah that would be good. I was thinking January because December is suppose to be editing month, and there are a lot of days that would be spent without being able to write because of holidays.
