Yes the month of November is coming around again. That so inappropriate month in which to write at least 50 000 words in some semblance of fiction.
Apparently they're trying to change something on the site to make it handle the 1st and last day traffic better than it ever has.

Last year I participated and failed miserably at 20 000 odd words. Not even half way.
The story had potential but a combination of writers block laziness and no plans on how to simply just keep writing stalled me long enough that I fell too far behind.
This year I'm trying my hand at something less high sci-fi and taking it from a different angle. Which also implies doing some reference reading. Specifically some Lovecraft since I want to get a good idea of making the characters cosmically small (any other reference suggestions are welcome).
Also, I need to overhaul my Eeepc since it's my main writing implement.

In general to make it to the minimum 50 000 you need an average of 1667 words per day. I'll endeavour to make that my daily minimum and try and exceed it. I know a few people in my area who manage 200 000 words. They are obviously insane and I have not met them. This year I will take the risk and go to one of the writing evenings.

Has anyone else signed up this year? I don't want to be alone in this insanity.

i've debated going into this several times now, and never have because i've wanted to focus on uni, but i'm now taking a couple years off, so i really wanna try it out. writing 1500 or so words a day is pretty daunting, but i've really been looking for a challenge, and honestly, it's just a matter of mindset. i was probably writing 50,000 words in some months of university, i should be able to do it when it's my own creative endeavour. that's what i'll keep telling myself anyway.
There's a fine line between genius and insanity. I have erased this line.

I might just give this a try ;) Even if I do horribly and my story is unfinished, unplanned and completely unintelligible, I might just try it.

Charlie Stross' LAUNDRY series.

Conyers/Susuri's SPIRALLING WORM.

And there's some kind of 'ADVENTURES OF HP LOVECRAFT' comic out there somewhere, tho i'm probably getting the name wrong.

Also the movie MOUTH OF MADNESS is worth a look see.

For moi, i can't even pretend that 50k in a month will happen, but i like the concept and the inveitable writers' block inspired massacre of participants.

This will be my 4th year. Can't wait!

I highly recommend getting involved with local write-ins and such if they are being hosted in your area.

I might give this a shot just for the sake of starting up my writing again, although I have no clue how I'll arrive at anything even close to that amount of words, especially since the Deathmatch will also demand a lot of my 'creative' attention.

Tried last year and got to about the halfway mark.

I'm hoping to have a bit more of a plan this year. I ended up scrapping mine and restarting a few days in, and don't want to do that again.

I might just try this year, but I'll use it to finish my perpetually TBC current WIP.

@UOW: Technically you aren't supposed to do that.

Start from scratch. None of your own previously written prose can be included in your NaNoWriMo draft (though outlines, character sketches, and research are all fine, as are citations from other people’s works).

This. Think I'll do it for similar reasons, as Uni finishes this week and I've only got the occasional exam during Nov. Not sure I'll make the 50k, but if I can actually get stuck into a particular character/storyline it's possible.

The Deathmatch will indeed detract from that, though. O.o

Fuck tha po-lice.

Nah, but I think I'm going to do the same. All these other people writing are going to make me feel like a slacker, so I'll pick up the pace on my own projects.

Don't let them take your freedoms, mannnn.

I'm always tempted to try it but I know myself...I'll write like a madwoman for a week or ten days and then get annoyed with writers block (or be too tired after work or distracted by a hockey game, and so on) and abandon the whole thing out of sheer disgust with myself. The thing is that I know I can write 50,000 words since I finished a story a few years ago that was close to that number - if not over - but to try and do it in a month just gives me a headache.

Still, I'm pondering...

Should we decide to take part, we could have a support thread here, where all the Malazan participants can share their stories of slow progress, sleepless nights, missed deadlines, violent writer's block and the like

@Wade: that's the idea. I know I'll be posting about my total lack of progress here.

I signed up just this year and it's my first to actually attempt a novel-length work.
I need to read up on a lot of things... or perhaps I'll just make things up and hope they make sense. Posted Image

I think I'll just write an unintelligible string of different characters, doing utterly unrelated things xD No over-arcing story line, just individual plots and (maybe) resolutions, without ever being overly cohesive
