dang....i contemplated that move for so long too....missed the obvious. Fucking loss by suicide...albeit unintentional....is that even still suicide?

Such is life.

Who's going up against the collective next?

EDIT

Many congrats to the collective by the way. Nice learning experience and very fun.

Whoever is going to be the individual next game needs a graphics editor that can handle .svg graphics. The chessboard I'm using is a layered file where you can drag around the pieces, then I export as .png for posting on here.

I use Inkscape but probably something like photoshop or GIMP2 would work too.

EDIT EDIT

Should we make a new thread for round 2?

grah....bugging me.

that was an idiotic move. I'm trying to be all blase about it above....but I feel like a tard.

EDIT

WHoever is being the next individual needs to give me their email. I can't UL a .svg file to the forum.

I'd be up for a second round, though not necessarily as the sole contestant :p

What do you think about forming teams that could chat about moves via PM or something

It would slow the game down too much, imho. If you want a different variant, perhaps 3 vs 3 could work, but teams could become very skewed in skill.

Yeah, that's true.

I was thinking of small teams - 2 or 3 each max.

But the communal discussion vs. the single player is kind of a nice learning experience too.

Or we could just have open discussion with teams, although that kind of wrecks any hope of strategy.

Damn I missed the end game :p
well played CF. too bad about them last few exchanges.

I think teams would be fun. though I thought we were going to
Vote the next player in based on contributions from the last
round.

I didn't know there was a system for choosing....I just figured you'd communally elect somebody.

Alls you need is the ability to edit a .svg file and save it as gif, jpg or png for posting on the forum.

To post the pics this game I would move the pieces around (they are separate elements) in the svg file and save it. Then export the image to something the forum can handle (ie png) and post it. Next move just reload the .svg, effect the response move and my next one, then export as png and post again.

It sounds convoluted but is very easy and quick once you do it a couple times.

That would probably mean we are playing Obdi or Use of Weapons next?

Here is a revamp of the rules for the next game. We can post it in the OP. Lemme know if you think we need any changes.

Quote

This is a chess game to see if an individual can beat a collective. Coordinate and discuss moves all you like, via PM or in the forum.

Rules (mk. 2):
  • The individual must take the first legal move posted subsequent to his last post as the collective's move.
  • Members of the collective may not move twice in a row. There must be 2 moves by other collective members in between a member's moves.
  • The victorious collective may choose a representative to go up against the collective in the next round. The victorious individual continues as individual in the next round or may pass it off to the collective.
  • All normal rules of chess apply, including "castling" and "promotion" (see below).
  • Post moves according to the battleship-style grid shown on the border of the board. ie "Pawn at B2 to B3". Standardized chess notation is fine too.
  • Collective moves should be posted as an unambiguous command. Placing moves in bold is a good way to indicate this, though it is not strictly necessary.

Promotion: Get a pawn to the far side of the board and you may swap it for another more useful piece: Queen, rook, knight or bishop, even if you already have the starting amount of those in play (ie you could have 9 queens theoretically)

Castling: King moves two squares towards the rook on either side, and the rook is placed in the square the king moved over. Castling can only take place if:

1. All the squares involved are unoccupied
2. The king is not in check (i.e. You cannot castle out of check)
3. None of the squares moved over or into is being attacked (i.e. you cannot castle through or into check)
4. Neither king nor rook has been moved previously, even if they've returned to their starting square. i.e. Castling must be the first move of both king and the rook concerned, if it is to be done at all.

EDIT 2011-08-12 - rules updated RE command vs. question.
EDIT 2011-08-16 - rules updated and clarified after game 1

I'm happy to play you guys, especially if you discuss strategy in front of me :p If it helps, I'll also detail my own thinking for my moves, if the learning outcome is the most desired rather than the competition.
It is perfectly monstrous the way people go about nowadays saying things against one, behind one's back, that are absolutely and entirely true.
