I know I only just created a poll on weapons, but I'm on a roll!

We loved these characters, or at least enjoyed reading about them, and yes, we were pretty shaken up that they died, but hey, we get it. It had to happen. Life/books move on. New characters take their place. Wait, what's this? They're back! And in some cheap bit part, often for no real reason other than perhaps the faint sense that SE might have thought it cool to bring them back? We've learned to move on and live with the loss, but why haven't they?

So, disappointed you in the sense that either you felt it cheapened the initial impact of their death, or in the sense that it just didn't feel like the same character you had grown to love (though, I suppose, the argument could be made that dying would change a person). My vote goes to Kuru Qan for both the above reasons and the fact that his entire appearance in RG was entirely unnecessary in the first place.

P.S. Anyone who votes for Toc the Younger is a heathen! That's one guy who deserves to come back again and again. And again! ;)

P.P.S. Haven't read tCG, so no idea if other expired characters intrude into that book also. If they do, put in spoiler tags for my sake please!

Kuru Qan reappeared? Refresh my memory, he's actually the only character that comes to mind as staying dead. Sigh. When did Brukhalian come back, as well?

For me, tie between Hedge and Brys. Both just felt unnecessary, and cheaper than others. Maybe because they came back more or less as they were before, save for some additional angst.

Kuru Qan's ghost was swanning about in Reaper's Gale, and Brukhalian was in Toll in during the army of Death parts.

Could do with more spoiler warnings, now that I think about it.

You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

Baudin was probably one of my favorite side characters in DHG, especially his entire background with the Talon, which really tickled my curiosity into the past of the Malazan empire, not to mention his first shocking appearance of savagery with a chain and someone's neck. That image always stuck with me, especially his dedication to protecting Felisin. I always suspected we would see more of him, that his badassery would show up again and I would sigh with relief as he thundered into the book, breaking it wide open. I always had high hopes for him, especially as the Knight of High House Death.

Whiskeyjack. Especially since so much of a fuss was made over his death in MoI.
It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again; because there is not effort without error and shortcomings; but who does actually strive to do the deed; who knows the great enthusiasm, the great devotion, who spends himself in a worthy cause, who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement and who at the worst, if he fails, at least he fails while daring greatly. Had to choose Itkovian, especially since my recent re-read of MoI reminded me of what a cool character he was when he was alive. Now, I understand that the Redeemer's character isn't so much Itkovian as it's the result of his worshippers ideas of him, but still, damn disappointing that he'd find himself a god and tied to such a whimpy role.
It was ever thus.

ANGST? HEDGE? Besides a bit of musing while he trudged along to the Refugium, he is far and away without doubt the least angsty character. Even when his best mate basically blanks him upon his return, he remains upbeat and chirpy.


Hedge only got to return because he pulled a fast one on Ganoes, which I always kinda liked. Also, he's fucking awesome.

I don't really get how Whiskeyjack, Quru Kan, Brukhalian etc count. They're still dead. We've known since GotM that a dead person doesn't just go *pop* in to oblivion. If seeing what folks get up to on the other side of live is that upsetting, the clues were there very early on that it would happen.

I think that esp. having the powerful ones move into undead godhood was fairly appropriate. I guess the main one that bugged me then was Brys, felt it cheapened his dramatic and tragic death.

I didn't mind anyone returning, but I liked Onrack a lot more when he was (un)dead and single.

I thought it was a shame the way Itkovian returned. He died a good death, and his return just seemed to mock the sacrifices he made as Shield Anvil.
